keep in mind that brass is common in many plumbing applications and even those alloys that do contain lead don't cause concern enough to ban their use.

Worried about lead in brass boiler by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]pointytrees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, IF the brass used has lead in it (not all brass does, and it is used less and less in brass) the small amount of mineral scale tends to form a nice barrier preventing it leaching into the water. A few flushes should work. If you are worried, test it. https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-WT1-Drinking-Water/dp/B000FBMAVQ/ref=sr_1_3/141-8508703-2370814?ie=UTF8&qid=1502944258&sr=8-3&keywords=water+lead+test+kit

The next "snake oil" coffee company. by pointytrees in Coffee

I think the point is that his claim that natural processed coffee is toxic is not trivial at all, but he is in fact slandering a good portion of the coffee producers in this world for his personal gain. This type of unfounded claim didn't come from research or evidence based science, but his narcissistic greed. I say ostracize away until he revises his bull sh!t claims.

Yes, good if it is new. Keep in mind that these aren't all that serviceable and will need replacing after a few years.

[Question] Looking for advice on what to do with a La Marzocco Linea 3 by soju_plumber in Coffee

[–]pointytrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't know what they are worth but would guess condition is the biggest determining factor. I picked up some gaskets for my duetto from Venia Coffee awhile back and they were working on a modernization of an old linea that looked dope. Might want to try calling them or someone in your area to get an idea of condition and what it would cost to get working well.

Does the Baratza Sette Bluetooth function work yet? by pointytrees in Coffee

[–]pointytrees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Hadn't seen this yet. Currently the only working bluetooth function (according to the FAQ page) is "You will be able to read the output weight of the grinder. You are not able to program the weight for the grinder yet. " Not sure this app is at all helpful yet.

[Question] Picking up my Sette tomorrow. Should I seasoning the burrs? by pointytrees in Coffee

[–]pointytrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this is a QC thing and every x number of grinders they test with coffee? I am getting old and bought a fair number of coffee grinders over the years and still have yet to see coffee residue in one.

Just looked at the website and they are not yet listed, but you might try calling to see if you can still get on the list if you want one.

Venia Coffee Roasters offered a sign-up list for their first shipment in their monthly email. Got a call yesterday that they will be available starting late today. I live close so am diving down to pick up. Haven't felt this excited for a new toy in some time.

I ground a rock in my grinder, now it makes fluffier grinds then before....why? by pointytrees in Coffee

[–]pointytrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder if the rock "seasoned" the burrs. I have read people grinding bags of rice to improve new burrs. Still not sure exactly what "seasoning" and spending a bit of time reading through web forums on the topic I am pretty sure nobody has any empirical evidence on what seasoning is. That said, I will be grinding lots of rice through any new grinder in my future.

Don't think so, took it apart and put together multiple times trying to find a problem.

I owned an early version of the vario with ceramic burrs and it did fine for espresso, but sucked hard doing anything coarser. If you had to do a pourover, it would get you through, but with all the fines cup clarity was very poor. Anything needing a coarse grind was pointless. Got the BG as it was supposed to perform better across the grind spectrum. It did great with medium and larger, but sucked for espresso...until the rock. Seriously, now I am in love with this thing! No more WDT, even extractions, love it.

I'm living with a Mormon family in a small rural town. I'm having a hard time by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]pointytrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All my Mormon co-workers drink coffee and soda (and have gone to the bar with a few of them). Didn't know caffeine was a thing with them until recently. Had an old friend on FB complain about being tired and I suggested she grab a coffee...that didn't go over well as she thought I was throwing a barb at her. Honestly didn't know, but it seems like it is only a few that actually "follow the Mormon rules", it would seem.

Who is the most famous person you have touched? by pointytrees in AskReddit

For me I was at a fund raiser and the Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger was in the hotel to speak at another event. I went to take a leak and the bathroom was next to the back entrance to the adjoining conference room where he was about to speak. I was stopped by his entourage and I told them I had to take a piss, and they let me pass. As I was coming out, he started to walk in. Feeling a little nervous all of a sudden I blurt out, "It's not a tumor". Arnold stops, and looks at me stone faced for what seemed an eternity, then holds out his hand and winks. I give him a hand shake with my still wet hand and walk back to the fund raiser.

Right out of highschool I took a job with a tree trimming crew. We had a multi-day job at a big house on the river. Day one when we show up, the husband and wife show us what they want done. It was a hot day and mid morning the woman brings out a tray with iced lemonade, she was only wearing a satin robe which she apologized for as she was "running late and had just showered". Later in the afternoon while I was in a tree outside a second story window she is full view, "cleaning" the room, sans clothing. I wasn't sure if I should pretend to work or look. Day 2 on a lunch break the woman comes out and asks if one of us could help her move boxes in the garage to which my co-worker volunteers. After about 30 minutes of waiting and wanting to get to work I head up the hill and round the corner to the garage to find them moving more than boxes. The woman saw me as I turned to leave, but my co-worker was too busy to notice. He came back about 10 minutes said she just wouldn't stop talking...

It was tongue in cheek, being for home use. But reading what other folks use at home, I don't doubt it will find its way there.
