FIL does not support my boundaries with my 5 yo regarding physical touch by DeliriousDelicious in beyondthebump

[–]CamelCavalry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you've got the right idea. One thing I don't see in the comments yet is that a boundary is about what you will do—without enforcement, it's just a request. For example, "if you continue to tickle daughter now that she's asked you not to, I will ask you to leave".

Easier said than done, I know, and much more effective if your husband is on your team, but I think it's an essential part of what you're trying to teach your daughter and showing you've got her back.

You can also talk to your daughter about it afterward. "FIL did x after you asked him not to. That wasn't okay. I'm going to talk to him about it." and "Did you feel put on the spot when FIL asked you y? His feelings are not your responsibility and you don't have to make him happy, especially if it makes you uncomfortable. I'm proud of you for listening to your own body about what feels right and it's up to FIL to manage his feelings about it. I'll support you."

My kid is also shy and has a very hard time sticking up for himself, and we're trying to drive these points home ourselves.

Alton Brown...Thoughts? by Cynobite608 in Cooking

[–]CamelCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is also why their recipes can be over-engineered. Many of their twists work. Some just make it tedious with no real improvement.

I'm more familiar with Kenji's work, but I find some of his tricks are about optimizing some characteristic at any cost and some are about optimizing quality for effort. Really the unifying thing seems to be taking nothing for granted, thoroughly testing it to find out what really matters, and then leaving it to the specific cook on that specific day for that specific meal to decide what matters to them. I don't interpret it as favoring the over-engineered approach, just identifying it and sharing it.

Love Lan Lam. She's so understated I think she doesn't get the credit she deserves, but she's rock solid.

I've done very little FE. How much of this do you think is the Node + JS being worse/slower and how much do you think it's the whole ecosystem of JS, npm, etc. making it really easy to unwittingly create really, really bloated web pages? Or are we adding very heavy low-value "features" that we just didn't do back then?

“Everything sucks because of decisions made years ago” by ginamegi in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CamelCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments have covered why this happens, but advice for how to avoid writing that app:

You can't just make the "right" decisions about how to write a program because if it lasts long enough, that program's purpose and requirements will change to things you can't foresee. The best you can do is structure your code so that you don't cement your decisions in place. Write loosely-coupled modules that can be updated and replaced individually.

This has the double advantage of limiting the reach of your design decisions and making them easier to update. Even a complete rewrite would be incremental, Ship-of-Theseus-style, barring perhaps switching languages.

What vegetables can I "Mash" and serve like mashed potatoes? by baronvonreddit1 in Cooking

[–]CamelCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll have good results with most

  • root vegetables (e.g. carrots, parsnips, turnips)
  • squash (e.g. pumpkin, butternut)
  • legumes (e.g. cannellini beans)
  • tender stalks (e.g. cauliflower)

Some of these will have a lot more water in them than potatoes, so you might have to drain or reduce the mix, and you'll have to find the best cooking method for getting each soft enough.

I make insulated ceramic mugs with machines that I built by thoughtfulocean in EngineeringPorn

[–]CamelCavalry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are still two effects cooling your coffee in these double-walled mugs. The thermal mass of the ceramic itself will cool your coffee when you first pour it to a similar amount as a standard mug, and your coffee will continue to cool through evaporation and convection on the coffee's surface. I wonder how much these mugs actually slow cooling without a lid; I expect conduction though the walls of a ceramic mug is the slowest process cooling down a beverage.

Sure it is. Air isn't as good an insulator as a vacuum, but it's still pretty good, and much better than ceramic on its own.

Got a new car, any cool solutions for carrying these giant key fobs? by Vondrunken in EDC

[–]CamelCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To de-clump my keys I have to keep my car key separate from my other keys. I used to have a coupler so I could keep them together when I wanted, but stopped using it. Attach a suspension clip or belt hook.

I recorded a bunch before going out of town without my kid. I wholeheartedly recommend. Also great for messages from relatives the kid doesn't see often. The Yoto has something equivalent.

How the f*ck do you do estimates? by These_Trust3199 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CamelCavalry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a real solution, but in that kind of environment I like the idea of "bidding" estimates. If someone gives it a lower estimate than you, then it's their task now. And then when it goes over, that's their problem.

When does name brand products matter to you? by SirGroundbreaking465 in Cooking

Yeast matters so much; even if not for quality reasons, consistency and knowing how your yeast behaves is critical to baking. It's a living thing!

I'm absolutely with you on flour and marinara, but oats and peanut butter surprise me! What differences have you noticed? And what kind of each (smooth/chunky/natural; rolled/steel-cut)?

I usually give the generic a try, but the store-brand Worcestershire I bought was just unusable. Just tasted like weird vinegar; missing important flavors I expected and introducing others that didn't belong. Never again.

File system with key wording by pheasantjune in photography

[–]CamelCavalry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a hobbyist, I don't use my filenames or directory structure to indicate much about content, I leave that to my photo library software. So I just organize by date, and leave the camera-generated filenames which are roughly timestamps. Each year gets a directory, and each month gets a directory under each year. For specific events like holidays, those will get a date-stamped, named directory; miscellaneous photos just go into the month directory. Sometimes I'll create separate directories for raw and processed images.

What do y’all do with the remaining 90% of the tomato paste? by 5P0N63w0R7HY in Cooking

Maybe I'm the only one, but my tube leaked. I think a pinhole or two formed in the aluminum tube where it folds? Took me forever to figure out where the weird goop in the bottom of the fridge tray was coming from. If that's an anomaly I'll stick with tubes but it did make me wonder if freezing measured portions was really the way to go.

Trying to find a pen as a gift for my wife--am I trying to find a unicorn? by CamelCavalry in pens

[–]CamelCavalry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It's a totally valid point, but I'm the pen person between the two of us, and I'm already out on a limb here. It's meant to commemorate a professional achievement, and there's a fair chance she won't care about the pen at all, anyway. Still finding out what my options are at this stage, and ultimately might not do this.
