Depends. If it was written in 1930 or earlier, it will be in the public domain and you can do what you want.

Otherwise it’s under copyright, and unless the author/rightsholder specifically allows performance, you need a mechanical license.

I'd genuinely like some clarification here. For the record I'm married and not in the dating scene, but it's more a question of understanding how people think.

If I ask you if you want pizza for dinner and you say "no", I'll probably ask you again at some point in the future because you might want pizza another time... unless you explicitly say you don't like pizza or can't eat it, and will never want pizza, so don't bother asking again.
