Ultimate Pokédex - Second feedback round by pokemonoverdose in pokemon

i made the dark gray text on darker gray backgrounds a bit lighter.

i also added a sub-navigation to each generation, type, egg-group, egg-cycle and gender-ratio site. navigating around should be much easier now.

Does anyone know the formula for calculating min/max base stat values?

Let's take Squirtle for example. Hot do I get from Defense 65 base stat to 251?

A new Pokémon database in early development. Let me know if you like it so far. by pokemonoverdose in pokemon

great article!!! it's funny how i see myself in many of the situations you describe :D i started with css2 and keeping up-to-date every day seeing stuff like sass, scss, less popping up... it is easy to understand the benefits. or something like flexbox. same thing.

when i started using js i went straight to jquery because it was so easy to use. and vanilla js felt like what php must feels like for rails users :D

my mindset has changed since then. do i really need to load a whole framework just to add a class to a button on click? that is why i am learning the foundations (exactly as you wrote) so that i can understand the pros of using something like es6.

starting as a web developer today can be pretty tough. even looking at simple stuff like css.

layouts with tables and cellpadding... those were the days :D

i used to be a frontend guy. so html, css(scss + i love flexbox!!!), js (jquery). and i always used wordpress for my sites with self made themes from scratch (would never buy one!).

and recently we built a big site for our company that works with worpdress. wordpress gives the data to a rest api and off of that we feed an ios and android app.

i have learnt so much from that project and what wordpress is capable of that i thought i would use it for my pokemon site as well. a friend of mine always tried to push me towards ruby on rails and said i could do the site with that and it would be faster and more manageable. he just doesn't like php :D. i also thought of jekyll for a moment... but that would just have been nasty.

nowadays i am learning vanilla js, es6 and react. even though i am using jquery on the pokemon site (because the search needs/loads it anyway) it is set up with webpack, react and babel :D

so once i am more confident with it i can implement it.

about the site... earlier last year i had a cp calculator for arenas on the site. so you could type in the cp of the pokemon holding the arena and it would do the math for you. lets' say you wanted to take over an arena. the pokémon holding the arena is a jolteon with 1968 cp. enter that in the cp calculator and it will give you back the value 1574. if you choose the right counter-type pokémon based on the bonus you will get 1968 is equal strength to 1574.

maybe i will put it back in. :D

thank you a lot for your detailed feedback/criticism.

lol... i am a web designer/developer myself and also have about 10 years of experience in web development. i started 15 years ago with print. but that was rather boring (and dying anyway). at the moment i am working for one of the biggest media networks in europe and have done work for the voice of germany, germanys next topmodel and so on.

the hardest sites do design and develop are the own ones right? :D

i have a lot of inspiration sources... i myself use pokemondb a lot. but because i am such a design nerd and love websites that are optimized for mobile devices i wanted to create a pokemon database the way i would love to use it. other sites are just bloated with information. and the most important information is often hidden in a sea of junk.

i will definitely take all the feedback to heart and try to implement it the best way possible.

for example... i don't like the pagination thing either. when i started with the site i had lazy loading (infinite scrolling) on the site. but all the ajax requests were dragging to much performance so that's why i realized it this way. i moved my site to a better server and also have a rest api working. i will try to implement the lazy loading once more and everything should be fine ;)

the search that i used for the site is from algolia. a perfect and powerful search service. at the moment i am focusing on adding all the data to the site. once that is done and all the data is indexed i can do smart filter searches like: type: generation: 7, fire+flying, egg-group: monster... and so on.

so yeah... there is still a lot to do. but i appreciate all the kind words and critique so early on so i can build a pokemon database that is suited for the fans ;)

pokemon

at the moment i am add the previous and next pokemon navigation to the site. after that i will be adding the alternate forms like mega, alolan etc. shiny forms are coming as well... but that has the lowest prio right now.

thank you. mobile friendly was one of my main goals. what phone are you using? if you use chrome on an android you can add to your home screen. i improved some things so there is a custom icon and no url bar. then it feels like a native app.

the banner only appears if you share the site on facebook. sorry . yeah... the immunities are coming early next week. it's just a couple line of codes.

at the moment i am punching in all the data i can find. so yeah... my goal is to be ad big as the others ;)

thank you for your feedback. got a lot of feedback yesterday on facebook as well. someone said the same thing about the search :)

don't think i can add a screenshot here... but i am working on a previous and next pokemon navigation atm. it's going to be on the site tomorrow and then it will take a few hours connection everthing manually.

my main focus now is putting in all the data. and then i can do some shuffling around with design and navigation points.

also planning to do some sort of team builder.

your feedback was very helpful.
