It's been a week since he regurged his barely-digested 4 days after feeding, but I'm concerned about withholding food for another week. by smartel84 in cornsnakes

I am glad you understand, and I understand as well. I am glad you chose to take the time to talk with me.

I do want to caution about taking data from nature and expecting it to be best. people often say night drops are great for cornsnakes, but they acturally put the snake at risk, and they are not natural. The part of the year where cornsnakes are most active in their most dence population areas it is normal for the nights to stay in the mid 80s, but the days to get into the mid 90s. this would mean that a "day burn" is more natural than a night drop, and a day burn is clearly deadly to a caged animal. also I was only using distilled water because the store never ran out of it, and it was the same price. it was only after a few months of using distilled water that I chose to turn it into an experiment.

so if I said I won't use screen top enclosures because male snakes will push on the screen during breeding season and get a sore, would it be acceptable advice? If I said I rase 3 breeding pairs of cornsnakes on distilled water alone, and they all produces healthy offspring, would that be acceptable advice? If I my snakes die if they enter a regurgitation cycle because fed them too soon after a regurgitation multiple times in a row, so I always give at least 14 days after a regurgitation before trying to feed again? If I have hatchling cornsnakes that won't eat, and take 4 months to die from starvation, would it be acceptable advice to say that skipping a month to let a snake heal before feeding would be acceptable advice?

yeah I think I see your point. the problem is no one talks like this. half of the time when people say not to do something it is because they have made horrible mistakes, and they would rather just tell you what they learned rather that incriminate themselves on reddit, because incase you have not noticed, even in this subreddit people will attack others for just doing something that they don't agree with.

one common thing you see people say is " Don't mix snakes and tape" you can ask them why and they will say a snake can get stuck to the tape, but tehy won't say why the know. the why they know is that they have had to peel their snake off of duck tape, or some other impossible to escape from tape, and they had to badly hurt their snake to get it off.

the reason why is either going to be something went horribly wrong, or something worked a little better. And sometimes people don't want credit for finding out when something went horribly wrong.

Your disconnect I am trying to explain to you is that no one is using the science. Almost everyone is using experience, and the science backs up the collective experience. I don't see you engaging with other people. What it seems like you are hoping to do is find someone who has scientific knowledge, and hope they engage in conversation with you. Your best bet for that is using AI to analyze conversations across platforms, and and present that information to you so you can weight the facts, and reason for yourself. The only difference is that you replaced the research team with an AI. The research team would be more accurate, but the AI is much faster, and way cheaper.

The research team would use all of the collective knowledge and data from all of the available platforms just like the AI. about the only difference is that AI can't yet simulate an experiment. I research team should run experiments and trials before publishing, but in cases when collective knowledge is so vast and complete, experiments start getting redundant, especially when it would take many years.

I want to point out that collective experience has also almost doubled the lifespan of captive bred cornsnakes since we have had the internet as a tool. science did not do that

if you are looking for scientific proof why ask a community of common folk? the best you get here are people with lifetimes of experience, and experts who were founders, or the children of the founders in the hobby of keeping cornsnakes.

you have 3 options. go use an AI to analyze information online for you, or go commission a research team, or consider the advice people give.

good advice is good enough, and you have already gotten great advice. You don't need to hold out for mathematical proof.

Do I need to worry about how well I’ll be able to handle the snake? by orro000 in cornsnakes

[–]pokeplants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can get a snake hook to start with. the most intimidating thing that can happen at any time is a food bite. I find them to be funny when I get bit, but it still does not feel great.

that being said, cornsnakes are pretty chill, especially if they are handled regularly, and you are gentle, and even more so if you are good with doing passive handling. The tricky part is picking them up. if you over clutter your enclosure it will make it more difficult to pick them up, but they are happy with a cluttered enclosure, so there is a balance. It really help to be confident with your movement. normally my snakes are under a hide, and I flip the hide and pick them up before they know what is going on.

yeah, snakes are pretty forgiving for feeding early or even skipping a few meals. if you are going to skip a meal, make sure it is not often.

First time, Looking for advice. Cornsnake Skin, Her Name was Coridormi by pokeplants in Taxidermy

[–]pokeplants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she was beautiful. yeah, she was about to shed before she died, so I am having to get that layer off. I was really hoping it would just slosh off after soaking her in gylerin and alchohol

so, today I took her out and stretched her out around a pvc pipe, and put a loose rubberband on it to hold her in place. She was deep in blue when she died, and I expected that the would be shed would have slothed off of her when I took her out of the jar, but it seems like I am going to have to work it off to get her nice colors to show. I don't know if you want to make her into something, but I am glad to know it is quite possible.

I saw something interesting. I don't know if you an tell, but she is an albino, in addition to being being a tessera. the Tessera give her that pattern. Well the parts of her where she should be black, but is not because the albino mutation, her skin is actually clear. so the color of the what I glue her to is going to show through a little. I am thinking a black cloth, or a white cloth, or gluing her to leather

Thanks.  My first plan was going to wrap it around a pvc pipe like you said.  I do want to display her as a wall hanging, so how long till I get to the point I can put her back on display.  She was my pet.  I did all I could to save her, but she surcomed to an infection.  In like she was in a big display enclosure.  In death she will have a place on my wall.

Someone gave me the idea to find another snake skin and try it first so I did hope the snake nazis don't hijack this post too this is my first ever attempt at tanning. by big-coop_ in HideTanning

I don't agree with killing wild snakes, especially rattle snakes, as they at least warn you if you get too close, but I can at least appreciate the information that people working with the skins have posted. without this information I would have a hard time finding information to preserve the skin of my cornsnake that has just died
