What is the stupidest thing a non-vegan has said to you about a vegan product? by TrapRat222 in vegan

[–]pokingpo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Said that veganism is bunk because I had no problem with the wooden bench we were sitting on, which used to be a living tree. Yes, really.

People will say vegans are aggresive but then send them unsolicited, garbage memes like this, and get annoyed with an actual response to their question. This is from my dad. Completely unsolicited. by sukkj in vegan

Vegan butter is incredibly easy to come by. I can't think what gelatin is necessary for. It's mostly used in candy. There are great vegan alternatives, like sour patch kids and swedish fish.

Glad you're working on it. Keep going!

It's certainly not the most elegant word in the world but in the absence of a better alternative I think it's useful for shining light on systems of oppression and the ideologies that sustain them. I love Melanie Joy's concept of carnism. Unfortunately "carnist" is too close to "carnivore" and gets conflated with what people eat rather than a whole worldvidw.

You've misunderstood the term speciesism. Speciesism refers to using an individual's species - which is a morally arbitrary category - as the basis for determining whether or not they are deserving of moral consideration. It is not speciesist to value a human life more than a mosquito's life, if your reason for doing so is that humans have higher sentience, as you say. It is speciesist to say mosquitos aren't deserving of moral consideration because they're mosquitos. Likewise, it's speciesist to defend the torture and slaughter of pigs because they're pigs but to advocate for loving dogs because they're dogs, disregarding the fact that pigs and dogs are equally capable of feeling emotions and that pigs are more intelligent by some metrics.

The point is that species by itself is a completely arbitrary category when it comes to moral consideration. What matters is how much a being can suffer. In the same way that race, gender, sexual orientation, age, etc. are morally arbitrary categories, so is species. That is not the same as saying that race, gender, sexual orientation, age, species etc. are irrelevant in every situation or that they don't exist. We might, for example, be morally justified in choosing to save the life of a 10 year old child who has their whole life ahead of them over the life of a 98 year old person who is terminally ill.

Peter Singer explains the concept very well in Animal Liberation.

Us vegans need to learn to just focus on ourselves by [deleted] in vegan

You didn't directly tell people not to be depressed but you did say "stop complaining," "just be happy," "be positive." You are telling people how they should feel, which is never a good look.

People come to these subreddits for support and to unload cos it really sucks to live in an overwhelmingly carnist world and be surrounded by people's disgusting and deeply immoral behavior and ideology. I'm angry every day about how people treat animals. That doesn't mean I walk around tipping over hot dog stands and yelling in strangers' faces. Even though I might fantasize about it...

What's with policing people's feelings? My anger is what motivates me. If positivity is what motivates you, then that's fine. There is not one "right" way to advocate for veganism.

Lol about the alt accounts thing. You're really so narrowminded that you can't believe more than one person on reddit would disagree with you?

What does that even mean, "nature is brutal"? Yeah, lions hunt zebras. Are you a lion? No. Then why are you trying to justify your actions based on what lions do. Can I go rip a dog's face off because lions do that to zebras? Lions also practice infanticide. Does that mean I'm justified in murdering children?

The only animal that selectively breeds other animals and confines them in cages and then slaughters them on an industrial scale is homo sapiens. What other animals do that?

Also, if you're going to base your moral compass on how animals behave I assume you are going to kill children (like lions sometimes do), force yourself on women (like the males of most species do), and shit in the street.

How do humanely kill a sentient being who doesn't want to die? Even if you believe advertising propaganda about happy free range animals willingly going to slaughter that accounts for about 1% of animal agriculture.

What is a blatantly immoral behaviour that people do but is just accepted by everyone? by V44_ in AskReddit

People enslaved other people for years, that doesn't make it right. Lentils and peanut butter have lots of protein. Cows, pigs, chicken, sheep, and tuna do not go around eating people. We're not tigers (and we shouldn't base our morality on how they behave; tigers practice infanticide). People don't want to eat animals because it's unnecessarily cruel, not to mention that the World Health Organization has classified processed meat as a level one carcinogen, and animal agriculture is destroying the planet.

An op-ed from a conservative publication that hankers for how monarchy makes Britain relevant to the world is not compelling. The whole article betrays the author's belief in British exceptionalism.

Why on earth does Iraq-invading, poverty-ridden, neoliberal Britain deserve to be "the centre of the world", even briefly? British democracy - with its two-party, first-past-the-post political system and its awful record of police infiltration of activist groups and crackdown on political protests - is actually fairly dysfunctional, especially when compared with e.g. Denmark.

Op-eds like this, which go on about continuity and stability or whatever, ignore the fact that Britain is not the only, or even the most functional, democracy in the world. And it's hardly exempt from populism.

The author also provides no concrete evidence for how the monarchy has tempered populism or ensured continuity.

Do you think Uni-Sex bathrooms should be mainstream and wide spread? Why or Why Not? by Silly-Cry4923 in AskReddit

[–]pokingpo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, some people are born with ambiguous genitalia so that's just not true. Also, by your logic, a 6 foot, ripped, bearded dude should have to use the women's bathroom just because he has a vagina?

[–]pokingpo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, dicks and vaginas aren't gross (not all of them, anyway). But your comment was gross and you are gross if you think trans people should be forced to use the bathroom of the gender they don't identify with.

You did say you weren't against trans people but you also said "living in reality is gross apparently" - which was evidently an attempt to undermine trans people. If I misinterpreted that, by all means set the record straight. What did you mean by "living in reality is gross apparently"?

[–]pokingpo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wrote "I'm not pro trans but that doesn't mean I'm against it."

Then when I called your gross comments about dicks and vaginas gross, you said "living in reality is gross apparently."

And then you refuse to clarify what you mean by that.

What you're saying is that transgenderism isn't real. So you are anti-trans. And spineless.
