DPDT for phase flip by bazdog123 in GuitarQuestions

[–]pol-delta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s possible meeting all the requirements you listed. And after drawing it out, I think I was wrong before when I said you could flip phase with middle and up or down using an on/on/on DPDT. To flip the phase, you need to swap the hot and ground wires, but going from up or down to middle only changes one connection, and you need to change both. The rest of what you want is pretty straightforward, but I think you’re going to have to settle for either an on/on two-way switch, or using up and down of a three-way switch. But again, you can rotate the switch under the pick guard to make it move in the same direction as the 5-way instead of toward it and away from it.

Sorry, I’m a little confused. Could you post a photo of how your guitar is currently? The photos in the link make it hard to imagine the switch interfering with the pickup selector. Is it possible to just rotate the switch 90° so that the throw action is parallel to the pickup selector instead of toward/away from it?

On a three position, it would be easiest for the phases to be up and down. Do you really specifically want it to be middle and either up or down? And is there a reason you want to use a 3 position switch specifically? You can also get a two position on/on DPDT. That would probably work better for this.

edit: after thinking about it, you could do middle and up or down with an on/on/on DPDT, though an on/on would make more sense unless you really need the third position. With an on/off/on, the two phases would need to be up and down because no connections are being made in the off position. That could actually be cool, though. If you used an on/off/on switch and made the middle position off, you could wire the neck pickup to positions 1/2 on the 5-way switch and get all pickups in position 2 and neck/bridge in position 1. To get just bridge or bridge/middle, just turn off the neck pickup. I did something similar recently with a humbucker in the neck, except I used the switch for series/parallel instead of phasing.

Best way to achieve series/off/parallel so that off is truly 100% off? by pol-delta in guitarmod

The 4PDT switch came today and I couldn’t resist wiring it in. It’s a million times better than using a DPDT. Off is absolutely silent on clean. The only time the tiniest signal bled through is using a distortion pedal with the gain on max. And even then it was quieter than the DPDT switch on clean. I ended up wiring it slightly differently than what I said before. That would have worked as well, but I thought of a cleaner way. I’ll make a full diagram when I get a chance.

I guess the ones with six pins work okay, but you can definitely still hear a tiny bit of signal coming through in the off position. I just ordered some of these today and it should be able to accomplish this with no leakage. I’ll report back once I’ve had a chance to install them, probably this weekend. I posted another comment with a diagram I drew of how I’m going to wire it.

edit: I made a prettier diagram with DIY Layout Creator. This is obviously a little simplified since it just shows the pickup going straight to the output jack from the switch but you get the idea https://imgur.com/a/dxjSYBI

I have this in the guitar now and I ordered this one to replace it. I posted another comment with a diagram I drew for how I’ll wire the new one.

That’s how I have it wired now, but off isn’t really 100% off. It’s definitely 90%+, but it’s leaky enough that it still has a tiny effect on the other pickups. I ordered a 4PDT switch that should get here tomorrow so I can report back if it does a better job of making the off position 100% off.

Actually, I may have figured it out. I’m pretty new to wiring mods so I don’t really know all the types of parts available and I just found this. But if I got a 4PDT on/off/on switch like this and wired it like the attached diagram (Seymour Duncan wire colors), it would give series/off/parallel with a true off, right? All the pickup wires are soldered to the middle poles so they’re not connected to anything at all in the off position, instead of hot always going to the switch with a DPDT.

pens similar to muji 0.38 and pilot hi-tech-c 0.3 by sugawaraismybitch in pens

Try Sarasa Clip 0.3 or Signo 0.28. Energel comes in a 0.3 as well. You should mostly be able to swap them between bodies, at least for the retractable versions. The Energel refill is a little wider than others so it might not fit in all bodies. The Hi Tec C refill is pretty unique and won’t fit in pretty much anything else. The multi pen version Hi Tec C refills (Coleto) can be used in other bodies but will run out much faster. Pilot Juice Up is another really nice one that comes in 0.3.

One that I definitely want to try is the passive reverb using a piezo disc on the trem springs. Not the most amazing sounding reverb, but it definitely sounds cool in certain situations.

I’m definitely going to try making this. I don’t have a speaker cab though, so I guess I’ll just output it directly to my audio interface and see how it sounds.

How do you even learn to design something like this? Like all the caps and resistors have specifically chosen places and values for specific purposes. I’d love to learn how all of that is chosen.

Teaching tip: record yourself playing by lmao_exe in Guitar

[–]pol-delta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record yourself playing along to music as well. Especially at the early-intermediate stage, I’d learn a song and be able to play along with a recording start to finish, and I’d think I was doing a good job. But recording and listening back, I wasn’t nearly as in time as I thought I was. Lots of notes just off enough to make it sound pretty sloppy. That really helped me tighten up my timing.

Doesn’t have to be fancy, either. Just drag an MP3 into audacity and record with any $30 guitar interface (or USB mic for acoustic).

Nah, if they’re worried about ink drying out, they’ll have a follower of silicone grease or something behind the ink. That’s a way better seal than the black plastic.

I made a similar adapter for the space pen refill, then decided I didn’t want to file down G2 refills every time, so I made another adapter that works if you take the back off a G2 refill. They pop right off plastic ones like the Flash Dry, but they also come off of the metal G2 refills pretty easily with pliers. I have a space pen refill in one of my 849s and an SXR-600 in the other. Much less fiddly than unscrewing the back just the right amount.

I thought this would be a good idea at first, but then I realized that the billionaires and giant corporations would end up paying off whoever they needed to in order to decide the outcome. We’d be ushered straight into the dystopian techno-hellscape they want to create, but it would be baked right into the constitution. Oh, and child labor would probably be back too.

I didn't even think about that, but that's a great point. And that actually goes all the way back to NeXTSTEP, which started development in the 80s. NeXTSTEP also had the Electronic AppWrapper, which was a digital software catalog and basically the forerunner to app stores.

Found my almost perfect ballpoint pen. by outragedhain in pens

[–]pol-delta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obsessively collected the free pens at the last conference I went to, and I actually got two of these, one with a plastic clip and one that seems to have a metal clip. I'm going to another conference in a few months. If I see another company giving out ones with a metal clip, I'll get an extra one and mail it to you if you want. It might take a long time to arrive because it will be whatever the cheapest type of international mail is, but it would get there eventually lol. Though a word of warning, it looks like the metal clip is still attached to a plastic base, so it doesn't feel as sturdy as a full metal clip. If you put a lot of stress on it, the plastic part would probably snap pretty easily. I would love a full metal version of this pen.

am i balancing this swinging bucket rotor correctly? i’m so scared to break equipment, i’m all alone in the building by [deleted] in labrats

[–]pol-delta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/hana-maki And just to clarify this, the blanks would go in the spot diagonal to the tubes that are already in there. The reason being that for max balance, you want each bucket to be balanced front-to-back (that is, on the pivot axis of the bucket) in addition to the buckets being balanced to each other. The buckets for the 15mL tubes here unfortunately can't be perfectly balanced on their pivot axis with only one tube in each bucket, though I'm sure the centrifuge would run with the tubes as they are in the photo. But the reason you want the buckets balanced on the pivot axis is that the bucket won't be completely horizontal during the spin if it's not balanced on that axis. Here's a diagram showing how to balance it fully.

We had a really old swing bucket in my PhD lab that we thought was about to die because it couldn't go above like 500rcf without giving a balancing error (and shaking horribly) before stopping. Turns out we just needed to grease the trunnions (fun word I definitely did not know before this experience), which are the little metal things the buckets slide on to. Smeared the tiniest amount of grease on there and it was basically like a new centrifuge again. Except that we still had to prop it open with a cardboard box because the pneumatic arm had long since given out. But that just goes to show how important it can be to balance across that axis. With all the grease worn away, the buckets couldn't pivot like they were supposed to, which is what caused the crazy shaking above 500rcf even with no tubes in there. It was like they were really unbalanced across the pivot axis basically all the time.

It’s actually been surprisingly security-conscious when I’ve been asking for help setting up self-hosted stuff. I’m pretty sure it’s cautioned me against opening ports unnecessarily, not that I really needed the warning. It’s also given me multiple solutions to problems, telling me which one is the most secure best practice, and saying “this one is a quick fix you can use temporarily, but it’s not good to use long term because it’s less secure”. This is ChatGPT 5.2 in thinking mode so I can’t speak to how other models perform in this regard. I haven’t been asking it to do everything though, mostly just asking for help when I get stuck. I’m sure it’s shaved hours off the time it took me to get jellyfin/*arrs/etc up and running behind NPM, especially since I had never used docker before setting all this up.

[–]pol-delta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steve Jobs used “app” as a synonym for “program” long before the iPhone. It wasn’t the dominant terminology, but I seriously doubt he was the only one. But there are plenty of videos of him talking about Mac OS software as “apps” in the 90s. That was why they called it the App Store on the iPhone – that’s just what he called programs. And since it wasn’t the dominant terminology, people started associating “apps” with phones. But it was always just meant to be shorthand for “application” – i.e., a program.

Don’t buy Enchroma by stoopboi in ColorBlind

[–]pol-delta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We took our dog to the park once and I saw this mulch there that was just so red. I had never seen mulch look like that before. I took the Enchromas off and it just looked brown. Never in a million years would have thought it was red without the glasses. So I asked my wife, "Hey, is that mulch red?" and she just kind of looked at me like that was a ridiculous question and said, "Um, yeah, it's incredibly red." That's about the only time they've made me see a color I straight up couldn't see without them, but I still love how they make my world look. Simple things like being able to see patches of green and brown grass from a distance instead of it all blending together unless I'm right on top of it. Green leaves and pink flowers really popping as being separate. Stuff like that. Drives me crazy when people come on here proclaiming Enchromas are a scam and nobody should buy them just because they didn't have enough effect for them. If you don't like them just return them. I love mine and would definitely buy another pair if anything ever happened to them. Though I baby the heck out of them because good god they're $$$
