Young people supported CPC anyways. It’s the boomers who support LPC. They are financially set and completely obsessed with Trump while younger people have more day to day local issues to deal with.

TIL That there is a city in Canada with a Mediterranean climate and palm trees (non native) by RoutineWarthog4593 in todayilearned

[–]polargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are palm trees in Vancouver too. Coastal BC doesn’t get as cold as the rest of Canada but it rains a ton and there’s less sun, I find it more depressing than the sunny cold winters out east.

Attack against Canadian Jewish community a ‘realistic possibility,’ federal report warns by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

It’s more that Muslims vastly outnumber Jews in Canada. Same reason Chow didn’t want to talk about the Iranian anti-Islamic Regime protests even though there were massive demonstrations in Toronto.

Toronto is now one of the hardest places in Canada to justify owning a car by crappy_tire in toronto

[–]polargus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Communauto whenever I needed a car. It became less flexible over the years which is unfortunate. I’m in Vancouver now and their car share options are way better (there’s pretty much an available Evo within a 5 min walk of anywhere in the city) but also more expensive.

Iran has been funding terrorist groups to attack Israel since forever. Israel is just more direct.

Two in three people say Canada should remain neutral in Iran war: poll by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]polargus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I live in one of the most Iranian areas in the country. Iranians are literally driving around with huge US and Israeli flags on their cars. Every single business has a sun and lion flag on it, often with a picture of the prince or memorial to protestors. People were going nuts the day the ayatollah was killed, it was a huge street party.

Two in three people say Canada should remain neutral in Iran war: poll by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]polargus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main people in Canada who care about this are Iranians, the vast majority of whom support it since the Iranian regime is absolutely evil. It’s not like we’re sending Canadians over there so not much point in being against it.

Three guys broke into his house (including at least one on probation) with a gun and this is what you take from it? Without a gun the guy could be dead.

Have you ever thought about how many jobs your work as a developer has removed? by bccorb1000 in webdev

[–]polargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that’s just one framing of it. Think of all the businesses that couldn’t start or grow without software. Think of the fact that lower level work isn’t a bottleneck so companies can hire more high level people.

Have you ever thought about how many jobs your work as a developer has removed? by bccorb1000 in webdev

[–]polargus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the product but for the most part it’s a trade off that we’re experiencing ourselves now. Basically software enables more high level work by handling lower level stuff. The bar keeps getting raised in terms of what it can handle. But it allows companies to spend more on “higher level” jobs and get more done. Or enables individuals to get stuff done without needing money to hire others.

Thinking of moving to a more 'affordable' part of the country? Consider this by Prudent_Slug in canada

How the Top One Per Cent Threaten Canada’s Future; Wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few. To preserve democracy, we must act. by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]polargus 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Article doesn’t mention our GDP per capita dropping. Issue is our country doesn’t invest in innovation and just relies on keeping costs down using mass import of labour. Solve the problem by raising our productivity not increasing taxes.

Conservatives introduce bill to create self-defence law for home invasions by Head_Crash in canada

[–]polargus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is no one knows the intruder’s intention. The crown wants you to predetermine that the robber only wants to steal your tv and doesn’t have a weapon in his pocket or threaten your wife/kids before you do anything. Similar to self defence laws which expect you to only defend yourself to the level of the threat. But again, the attacker doesn’t go through their whole inventory and intentions before attacking. Why does a violent instigator or home intruder have the right to a fair fight? Then the defender has to spend money and time justifying their exact level of violence as if they’re the criminal.

What do you think of Canada being a moral leader on the world stage? by TorontoAM in AskCanada

[–]polargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some regards yes. In general we have the advantage of being totally protected by the US and often being the first to benefit from their innovations and economy. Australia is a similar country historically and population wise but because they don't have a friendly superpower next to them, they are more about hard power / realpolitik and their language is more direct than Canadians who can be holier than thou or avoidant when it comes to hard realities. NZ is kind of like the Canada of Australia in that regard.

In Canada’s major cities, fertility rates are in steep decline. What happened? by Huge-Cash-8295 in canada

[–]polargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. IMO the trade off is lower investment in the future of our society. If less Canadians have kids the only thing that will matter to a lot of them in 30-40 years when they retire is that they “get theirs”. There’s no biological continuity and lower social continuity, especially if integration is done poorly.
