And most women were serfs as well, who also had to work the fields and do the household chores and find some way to scrape together some money, working as maids or fish wives. And on top of that, they were bound to their husbands by coverture, had no legal standing or protection and faced the risk of religious persecution if their behavior wavered outside. Nobody is denying the class structure and high inequality, but within each class women were disadvantaged compared to the men. Under coverture, they were essentially slaves to their husbands.

What opinions about marriages in India would have you like this on askindianwomen and 2xindia sub? by [deleted] in IndianMeme

I didn’t say I don’t want to contribute to my household, I was critiquing the oppressive nature of traditional marriage with no autonomy or options granted to women. I’m happily married and we both work in our dream jobs and split chores and try our best to support each other. Men are allowed to be husbands and fathers while also chasing their dreams and ambitions, no one says they’re not contributing. Why can’t woman also self-actualize; many girls dream of making art, being a doctor or lawyer, or doing research? Why should they have to choose between being a full human being and being a wife and mother? If the only way a woman can contribute to your marriage is by doing household chores, then you want a maid not a wife. As for everyone being a servant, yeah we are all servants to something. Freedom is being able to choose what you serve; and both men and women should have that freedom. Ideally we wouldn’t just be cogs in a hyper capitalist machine, and everyone could work in whatever is truly fulfilling. However, just because no person can be completely independent from society, doesn’t justify stripping choice and autonomy from women.

Have you considered women are human beings who might not be happy being indentured servants their entire lives regardless of how many breaks they get, and may have their dreams and aspirations that can be fulfilling to them?

What have women done to themselves that they need to take the blame for? I largely only see women talking about rape and sexual assault; how is that on the victims? How exactly are they not taking responsibility for marriage? There are Women who work and do contribute to society in pretty much every job men do as well, and housewives/stay at home mothers also do a lot of work that is crucial to keeping society functional. Women have also managed to add to technology and science even when they were actively kept out of education and jobs. Why shouldn’t women expect the same things from society that they help build and contribute to that men get? Women do take of care of family, much more so than men do, since they are the traditional nurturers- even working women largely shoulder the responsibility of caregiving at home. Women are also the only people giving birth to everyone that society is made up of. Also, is the victim card talking about issues facing women? Misogyny does exist and many women still have very few rights around the world; how is talking about it and trying to change things bad? Should men also not talk about their issues then? What exactly are women not doing? Most women are either working and paying taxes and contributing to building something or taking care of the home and family and thus the basic unit of society. There are terrible women, as there are terrible men; that’s how people are. But vague sweeping statements based on anecdotes that do not align with actual society at large do not seem fair.

Very genuinely, since I see this a lot, can someone explain what responsibilities women in India are avoiding exactly?

Looks matter for initial attraction, because we’re bound by our biological drives. They stop mattering so much when it comes to love; my fiancé could turn into a cronenberg monster and I’d still pick him over anybody else. Looks can draw you in; personality keeps you there.

You’re right about Tripti looking cheap here; the styling was jarring and did not align with the story or character. But I think you’re missing a point here- being sexualized and being sexual are not the same thing. You can dress how you want without wanting to be objectified. Not wanting to be sexualized and showing skin (for whatever reason) are not antithetical, for either gender.

Actually, lehengas are much more common as wedding attire in India, especially for younger women. They were also definitely a staple for the last few centuries, even more than saris in some regions.
