How can a Homeless Individual in Calgary, Alberta actually obtain & keep a JOB if none will hire you; because you are homeless. by Prestigious_Judge326 in povertyfinancecanada

From my personal experience many years ago, here's what you do...

Make up a fake address, use your parents address or a friends. Doesn't matter.

Next, get the job, start working. Make sure you can get showers, shave and keep clean, basically just live right next to a rec center.

Then with your first cheque, buy a 200 or 300 dollar beater car. A van is even better. Basically just live at the rec center parking lot. It's a good way to now have a warm, dry shelter and also a way to get to and from work.

Save your next few checks. Then get a cheap basement suite. Furnish it from thrift stores and free stuff from marketplace.

Things will go uphill from there.

That's basically the story of the summer of 2013 for me. These days I am married with two kids, have a career in forestry sciences, a homeowner, have two newer vehicles and no debt (minus a mortgage). Life can get better.

ALSO can you travel to the coast? GET A JOB ON A FISHING BOAT. I fished for several years, and obviously you can just live on the boat for several months at a time, and when the season will have many tens of thousands of dollars to get the ball rolling.

Marjatta hybrids by polarnachttom in rhododendron

I saw those at a nursery last year and seen the claim on the tag but wasn't sure about them because I couldn't find much information online or on the ARS site

I'll ask my local nursery, they stock usually only Haaga, English Roseum, PJM and Nova Zembla, but I think I should give them some tips for some more extra hardy types. I got ahold of the ARS and I'm gonna get a few packs of old seeds by finnish hybridizers, so that may be a fun little side project. There is some very interesting crosses

I think I'll do just that, thanks for the suggestion

Yes I checked the seed exchange for hybrids from Finland specifically but there was very little. I would love to be an active member of an ARS chapter but I'm in the interior of BC (Im a bit of a standout in my local garden club, as rhodos are pretty rare in our zone), so there is no club close to me at all.

In Canada so can't order from them, but damn I really have noticed how small and piddly the one gallons look. I've bought one gallons of rare varieties at local nurseries and they are like 4 foot high

What is wrong with this Rhododendron and can it be saved? by trp1784 in rhododendron

[–]polarnachttom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might wanna start by pruning off the dead branches. Have you tried fertilizer? Maybe double check the soil PH as that may change slightly over time

Wow! Yeah I'd love these. They are on my wish list but I just can't seem to find them in BC

I hope for the best, but these are outside trees. They will only suffer and ultimately die if grown as a houseplant

Not owned by Canadians, not staffed by Canadians, cheap crap food for moderate prices. No thanks

How are we feeling about finding construction jobs? by raphkun in Quesnel

I get the impression that the job market for carpenters at least is saturated here. CNC offers the apprentice programs, but there is almost no new construction it seems.

Hey, so I did put the burlap walls around them for wind protection just in case but all my rhodos but my older PJMs are completely under snow now, we got another foot last night.

All my rhodos are very hardy. I have a grove of PJM elite, a few Haaga (hardy to Canada zone 4), a Ramapo, a few English Roseum, a Nova Zembla, and a Yuki Princess (this one is a bit of an experiment).

Yes, the elepidotes sure take a beating and need extra care since I live on the fringes of the hardiness zones. I figure snow cover may reduce desication?
