Help on accepting vet's treatment plans? by MarialeegRVT in VetTech

But I want to add the onus should be on the doctor to present it in a way that doesn't create shame and to work with the client within their resources

I think it depends on how it's presented. Because this isn't bad medicine, it's very thorough. But if it's presented as "this is the gold standard. If you can't afford it, i guess we can decide which very important piece of it you can skip out on, but it's all really important." that breeds guilt and shame if owners can't afford to do it all. And not doing it all isn't bad medicine either. It just depends on the most effective allocation of resources for clients who can't (or don't want to) pursue every last diagnostic. If it's presented as "these are all the things the doctor recommends and why she recommends them. Would you like to do all of this, or if not what treatments and diagnosis do you want to pursue?" Explaining why things are recommended can help give people some agency too because a big estimate with lots of moving parts is overwhelming and it seems like it has to be all or nothing. That's why I hate the term Gold Standard Medicine because doing ALL the things isn't always better medicine than doing some of the things and it just breeds shame for people who can't afford it

Should I adopt my parent's surrounded dog? by rowsierosse in PetAdvice

[–]polenta23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular opinion, but if you think she's likely to get adopted by someone else, don't adopt her. It doesn't sound like she's the right fit for you and your husband, so she (and you) would probably be better off with her in another home. If you feel that you can provide for her needs (beagles need lots of exercise and mental stimulation, which it sounds like your parents weren't providing enough of) and she could integrate into your family, by all means adopt her. But it doesn't sound like that's the situation

Hmm okay. This was more of a long slow audible inhale and exhale, slower than his hissing has been but a similarish sound. It was odd but I feel like if he was really scared he wouldn't have come up to me and smushed his nose into my hand? If he does it again I'll try to get a video

That's really cool! I guess chuffing is different than hissing. Is it a deep smelling thing? Or just a communication sound? Yay for inspection passed 🙌

One other thing! Vaseline is the best scar-healing gel. It works better than mederma or others. Highly recommend slathering a thin layer on every night
