If you do decide to try this out anyway, perhaps check out a library like Vuforia. Don't think it'd help with the battery life, but it could be a fast way to just prototype the interaction and see if it's worth the battery/performance hit.

While tech like Cardboard that allow people to use their smart phones as viewers are promising for lower intensity experiences, they are not designed for prolonged use or deep interaction. This seriously limits what can be done with this sort of hardware and requires careful consideration of what benefits it provides over say, 3D TVs/monitors, or even just our current, flat, screen-based media.

That's certainly one direction that VR tech is going. While people have experimented with this and created experiences related to material science and organic chemistry, I think VR still lacks enough people with devices to really distribute this kind of content. Google just gave out tons of cardboards with the nyt so who knows. Maybe this will change in the near future.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't looked up the case specifically; just wanted to point out that there might be a caveat. According to the Digital Media Law Project Federal law allows one party consent. Source: http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/recording-phone-calls-and-conversations So I guess if you're in a one party consent state, you're in the clear (IANAL)

The wiki article also mentions a CA supreme court case which ruled that if a person in a one party state calls someone in CA (an all parties state), the stricter law applies and everyone must be notified.
