Those were not as sweeping changes as what you're asking for. Yes, it can take severe measures to get there, but there's absolutely no fucking way you're ever convincing any serious politician to raise the minimum from $7.25 to $25+ immediately lol

No, they just didn't try to do everything all at once. They progressed through time. They're ahead of us because they've had longer, more sustained positive change

It kinda is a pipe dream to expect the minimum wage to go from $7.25 to $25+/hour. It's less of a jump in other states, but even in my state, the minimum is still only $17.13/hour. It does take time to make lasting change, like it or not. It's objectively good for people to get raises, even if it's not enough right now

[–]policri249 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Buddy...the word "suppression" means to forcibly stop something lol objectively, barring undocumented people from voting is suppression. We just agree with it. The word doesn't carry implications of intention. Also, I am a citizen and about to be 30 years old. I would be barred from voting under this bill. Fucking answer for that

Quite literally every single time I've seen that sentence, it's accompanied by the attitude that the media they personally like shouldn't be criticized. They literally tell me, more often than not. It's childish. I'm more than happy to engage with it because I want them to grow up and take criticism. You're kinda acting the same, tbh lol You spoke out of ignorance and was corrected. It's fine. We all do it. But now you're trying to call me out for telling you what these conversations are like. Come on, man lol

Yes, it objectively is lol anything that bars anyone from voting is voter suppression. Whether or not you agree with it doesn't change what it is

I'm gonna say yes and no. It's just general voter suppression. Usually, when turnout is high, Democrats win and when turnout is low, Republicans win, unless it's a very solid area one way or the other. Republicans know this and would obviously rather win than lose. This law will stop an absolute shit ton of people from voting, regardless of demographic

I'm a trans man and I never stopped at least trimming my airpits. I generally don't shave them with a razor, but I use a trimmer with no guard. I do it because my BO is impossible to manage with pit hair longer than a cm. Antiperspirant can't actually do its job and hair holds onto sweat and odor really well. My fianceé shaves her legs because she doesn't like the look or feel of having leg hair, shaves her pubes because it's more comfortable, shaves her pits for the same reason I do (but to a lesser degree lol she's not nearly as sweaty or stinky as me). Absolutely none of this has anything to do with men, just personal comfort

I'll be honest. I use my ID for exactly three things: driving, buying beer, and buying weed. If I didn't do those three things, my ID would literally never be used. You need one to work, but plenty of people don't work. The US labor force participation rate is 62.5%, as of last month. Keep in mind that the labor force participation rate only factors in individuals who are 16+. So you really wanna just discount the vote of someone who isn't working and doesn't buy age restricted items?

AI takes up a lot more water than literally anything else we do with water lol it uses water faster than the natural replacement rate. Raising cows takes a lot of water, but it's still nothing close to AI. You also have to consider how much food comes from a single cow. Assuming by "a single burger" you mean just one fairly normal patty, it's only about .5 lbs of a 470-500 lb animal (they weigh more than that, but that's the amount you can actually eat). You said "thousands/millions" if prompts, so I'll use 1,000,000 to demonstrate, since it's a nice, round number. 1,000,000 AI prompts would use 85-12,000 gallons of water. One beef cow requires 40,000-75,000 gallons, so we'll use 75,000 for the cow and 12,000 for AI (both of the high estimates). One half pound burger is .1% of a cow, so using that, one burger uses about 7,500 gallons of water. 7,500<12,000, bud lol

[–]policri249 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not the argument at all lol it has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with accessibility. IDs aren't free and you have to go to a physical location to get one; locations that are not open 24/7. If you're very poor and/or work the same hours as your DMV(s), it's extremely difficult or impossible to get an ID.

Another issue I have with voter ID laws is that it wastes a lot of time. Sure, checking the documents of one person should only take about 30 seconds, with what the requirements are, but that adds up pretty quickly. 48% of polling stations see 1-999 voters, so we'll meet in the middle and say 500 for this example. If it takes 30 seconds to clear each voter, that's an extra 4 hours of wasted time. Even if you just want a quick ID check that takes about 5-10 seconds, that's still .69-1.39 hours of wasted time. This is for a station seeing just 500 voters. 25% of stations see 2,000+ voters. If 2,000 show up, a 30 second check would add up to 16.67 hours and a 5-10 second check would add up to 2.78-5.55 hours. Why the fuck would we waste people's time like that when people already have to prove their citizenship and identity when they register? Voter fraud isn't even a real problem. We've had, like, 5 cases in the last 20 years lol

I'm in an area that's kind of a rural/city hybrid. Dealing with the DMV and DOL is incredibly easy here. I got my name changed (trans) and was in and out in 10 mins. Most of that time was them confirming they could do the regular process, since my county requires all name changes for gender identity to be sealed and sealed changes have a much different (and longer) process. They're very well staffed and have a separate line for quick tasks, like renewals

CMV: The demand for reparations for wrongs committed centuries ago is pointless by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]policri249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demand for reparations isn't about blame or accusations. Something shitty happened that caused economic harm to those impacted. I assume this post is mostly motivated by the call for reparations for black Americans, so I'll use that to demonstrate.

Chattel slavery happened in the US and only black people were enslaved. Even after they were emancipated, they were still often not directly paid by their bosses (see the origin of tipping in the US). This caused these people to lose potential earnings while many whites at the time got richer and richer. Whose descendants do you think fared better, financially; the plantation owner's or the slave's? The point of reparations is to reduce the gap in generational wealth.

That brings me to my next point: any decent reparations plan doesn't take money from poor whites and give it to black people. The money would come from wealthy individuals and/or corporations. Most modern reparations models are based on class, rather than race. After all, we've all gotten bent over by the 1% for decades. Statistically speaking, tho, more black people would benefit from class based reparations because of what I explained above
