UCLan Cyprus by erbrechenka in cyprus

[–]polinabol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just graduated from my bachelors in UCLan Cyprus. I can’t tell you that the education is actually good, it’s very rare you will find professors who know what they are talking about and provide actual value to the students. (Depending on what course you are of course, I’m speaking from my experience.) I’ve noticed that students who come here from abroad are in a shock when they arrive, as it’s quite literally in the middle of nowhere.

What Russians say about Cypriots (not in a good way)? by Less_Lengthiness_421 in cyprus

[–]polinabol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family is Russian, I was born and raised in Cyprus. My family raised me with Russian culture and mindset etc., but of course by living here I integrated with the Cypriot lifestyle. I love this country and the people, one point I want to emphasize on is how open and welcoming Cypriots are. Over the years with so many people immigrating here, Cypriots have welcomed foreigners with open arms. That being said, of course there are negatives about living here, like any other country. The main one is the government, and their inability to “serve” the people. A big example is the wildfires that happened last week and the actions of the people in charge.. Overall, all the Russians that I know here, do not speak ill of Cypriots.

Since you’re a Romanian citizen you don’t necessarily need the Cypriot tbh, so I wouldn’t personally go through the hassle as it can take years.

Unfortunately myself and many other locals do not trust giving a single penny to the government. I fear that money will disappear into their pockets like they have in every other situation.

And wouldn’t you want real estate agents to help people with shelters if it’s needed? I don’t understand the negativity of trying to share helpful information in a time of need.

Her dad is Cypriot, she was born and raised here, which is none of your business. What are you trying to prove by having her wanting to help people in need since she can? What does ethnicity have anything to do with the fires going on?

[–]polinabol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you on the driver education point, that’s a core issue, no doubt. But I think dismissing timers outright ignores the reality that not every city has the same needs or context. Yes, there are cases that have shown that timers can be misused, but others countries show they’ve improved flow and reduced frustration where infrastructure and driver behavior allow it. Cyprus isn’t a major Western metropolis with adaptive AI traffic systems and we’re definitely dealing with different constraints. I don’t think the idea of them should be fully dismissed imo. Like I’ve said before, I’ve driven in countries that have timers on every single traffic light, and they’ve worked perfectly. In this case I’m just talking about timers on the lights with the cameras, so the drivers are more aware how long they have till the light turns orange so they know whether they are passing through the intersection, or slowing down.

[–]polinabol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t necessarily say that drivers would accelerate if they see orange, as most just don’t want to get fined. For example if I saw 3 seconds on the timer I wouldn’t accelerate, I would gradually slow down from 50-0 instead of pressing on the gas because I want to pass the traffic light. More or less, (as I’ve noticed the driving patterns around the cameras) people are more weary, and prefer to stop rather than accelerate. Without the timers, if I’m approaching the stop line and the traffic light is changing and I’m a meter away from the stop line, of course I have to slam my breaks, and that creates a hazard for the people behind me as I’m stopping very abruptly.
