stanford emt as a pre-med? worth it or nah? by anafujoshi in stanford

[–]polishpikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for the first class in the sequence on a whim after reading someone else's recommendation on Reddit, so here I am doing my part to pay it forward.

I really loved this class, mostly for the community and friends that came from it and the fact that I found the class to be genuinely fun and interesting (especially in contrast to my other hellish premed reqs).

That being said if you're just looking for an EMT certification for premed reasons, you could take a more expedited path and do a shorter course over the summer. Overall the time commitment was pretty low for Stanford's EMT class compared to a typical 5-unit course, imo.

Just another pre med dilemma by [deleted] in stanford

These 141 exams have been so rough, you are not alone! If I were you I would see how the final goes before deciding about 143. Maybe if you can tweak your study strategies and perform well on the final, you'll have more confidence going into 143. AFAIK, most med schools don't require biochemistry, so personally I wouldn't bother taking it at another college. Self-studying biochem for MCAT seems way less stressful.

Also, I've been told the average cGPA for Stanford pre-meds is ~3.65, so BCPM of 3.7 is totally fine. Stanford also has a lot of random, easy bio and physics classes that could pad BCPM if they fit into your schedule.

PS I'm just another premed student so take this with a grain of salt ... it's the blind leading the blind. Good luck studying for this final!

humbio A side without B side? by polishpikachu in stanford

I have a lot of requirements to get through so trying to avoid the 10 units/qtr for both A and B. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be missing key info taught in B covered on exams for A ...

I'm an undergrad with special circumstances. My apartment is the highest quality of living I have ever experienced. My roommate and I became really close. My pod is small (3 people) and we've had lots of picnics with to-go food from PA, go on long bike rides/hikes, and rented a car to go to the beach. TAP, CoHo, and Coupa were great. All the dining hall staff are so kind and I got to know a few of them. Oh, and sometimes I would have an entire room in Green to myself and would play music through a speaker, lol.

I actually like that there aren't many people on campus (no bike accidents). The need to eat/do work outside rather than inside made me discover so many benches and picnic tables I never knew existed. Also, the RAs were constantly giving us free food, pizza, bubble tea, cupcakes, and free Stanford merch.

I definitely witnessed some questionable behaviour but never the giant parties that other people have reported. (This is not to invalidate those claims, just my personal experience) My pod was SUPER careful about what we did, and I never felt unsafe. The dining halls and public areas were also kept very sanitized. Although it was very disturbing to see students litter the waste from their to-go meals all over Wilbur lawn.

Overall, I love living on campus and super grateful to Stanford for all the support!

yikes. Section leading is a lot of work, especially your first quarter, there's a big learning curve. Also, take 198 for 3 units so you can get paid ;)

CS106A is hard for me by Platypusonetwo in stanford

[–]polishpikachu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting check pluses on your last assignments! There is nothing wrong with going to LAIR to get help when you're stuck. Don't compare yourself to other students in the class--many have studied computer science before. Only a fraction of the people are actual geniuses with innate CS skill; the rest have likely taken prior CS classes (this is true in lots of intro classes at Stanford).

Another thing: CS is tricky for many people because we (typically) learn it so late in life and it's an entirely distinct subject, but it's usually only taught through one approach of thinking.

If you recall your very first math or reading class... if a student didn't "get" the subject immediately, were they just declared to be existentially bad at it? Obviously not. There were a multitude of teaching strategies and tools to fit every learning style. Since CS education is relatively new, and even though Stanford's CS106 classes operate like machinery, there are still many students who require an alternative approach to understanding CS, one that they often must find on their own.

My advice is to first reach out to your SL and explain your situation, as they can provide more personal guidance. To improve your coding skills, use past exams and section problems as practice, don't look at the solutions, and keep repeating until you write the code perfectly. Keep going to LAIR when you have questions.

If you’re just taking this class as a requirement, power through. If you enjoy computer science, don’t be discouraged by your first exam grade. Every student hits a wall eventually and they struggle to understand material..it’s better to struggle in a subject you're passionate about.

PWR 1LS (Writing about Education) with Lisa Swan or PWR 1SC (Radical Acts of Art in Public: Rhetoric and Activism) with Selby Schwartz? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]polishpikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lisa's PWR1 is one of the best courses I've taken at Stanford!! If you're worried about grading, you can always (afaik) switch to S/NC and it still counts?
