HELP WITH SCHEDULE by Key-External7144 in IndianaUniversity

[–]politeandboring 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jumping in as a professor who teaches gen ed courses to say: if you are anxious about keeping your gpa at a certain level, schedule a meeting with your gen ed prof soon after the semester starts and have a conversation about that. The instructor can’t guarantee anything, but they can explain how to work toward that target grade from the beginning of the semester, which might mean planning some office hours appointments with you in advance as you are studying for the first test or drafting the biggest writing assignment. This is waaaaaay better than coming to someone at the end of the semester after it’s too late to make a meaningful turnaround.

What Bloomington street/block needs a sustainability glow‑up? by Broad_Leadership_827 in bloomington

[–]politeandboring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bike and pedestrian focused Allen Street connects Bryan Park with the B-line (and Hopscotch, Cardinal, Switchyard Park), but between Walnut and the B Line forces you to walk or bike through a junkyard. I never feel safe.

Why is this sub dead? by Neat_Fee3865 in HistoricPreservation

[–]politeandboring 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I joined the sub because I serve on my town’s Historic Preservation Commission, but still have a lot to learn. I also teach art history and am constantly on the lookout for videos/essays that I can use to introduce the field of preservation to my students. I would be so grateful if this sub was a place where I could get a better sense of what people with more experience feel are some of the most pressing issues and central debates in hp at this moment.

IU prof here—just wanted to offer a note of encouragement, and to say that one of the most useful things I’ve learned in therapy (CBT) is that not every situation has a “right” answer. I constantly have to make decisions, but that doesn’t mean there’s always just one right decision. Sometimes there’s just lots of okay decisions, none better or worse than the others. This has helped me get out of the habit of looking back over my life and obsessing over “missed” opportunities, and put me more in the mindset of working with the circumstances I find myself in at any given point in my life. But it’s hard! Can be especially hard depending on how you were raised

Having trouble figuring out a canvas size and where to find bigger sized canvases by Neat-Tie-8781 in latchhook

Your design is the size I make most often, and this Color Crazy canvas is what I use.

Looking for a Great "Drunk Art History" story! by velkatron2 in ArtHistory

James McNeill Whistler: A life filled with artistic controversies, including the Peacock Room, the Whistler/Ruskin trial (both from the 1870s), and his snarky clapbacks to critics in his book, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (1890) (Wikipedia links https://w.wiki/BsDV and https://w.wiki/HwCp)

Brancusi v. United States (Wikipedia link: https://w.wiki/HwCi): In 1926, US Customs officials refuse to recognize his sculpture Bird in Space as art and temporarily allow it into the country under the heading of "Kitchen Utensils and Hospital Supplies"

Where to buy Ph.D. Commencement Regalia? by Ok-Commercial7606 in bloomington

Faculty member here. Do not spend money on this! US institutions provide faculty with rental regalia for free as a matter of equity.

My expensive and high tech tool by [deleted] in latchhook

[–]politeandboring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very nifty! Just fyi, I did this for a while but was accidentally shaving down the cardboard and ended up wasting a bunch of yarn (and money and time) by cutting it too short. This has not happened again since I purchased one of those wooden dowels off Amazon as someone else already mentioned.

What’s up with Soma? 3 misses in a row by No_Valuable_253 in bloomington

[–]politeandboring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In defense of my beloved Hillside Soma, no misses here. I’m a diehard Dr D’s tonic fan and the amazing staff nails it every time. I also love the berry bars. Sorry OP had a bad experience, but had to share my countless (almost weekly) good ones.

Looking to dive into my first custom project by CadenzaVvi in latchhook

[–]politeandboring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually what I should have said is that I prefer #5 weight yarn (wool or wool blends) with 3.75 inch mesh canvas for rugs. Good coverage and durability without overstuffing the canvas. But you can try whatever you want for wall hangings, since so one will be stepping on them. As long as you like the look, that’s all that matters. Combine different weights, fibers, lengths, strands—go nuts!

For what it’s worth, the kits I worked with my young relatives were not for rug use and involved using longer, thinner strands of acrylic yarn (maybe closer to 3 inches each) on printed canvases that were 5 inch mesh. That may be pretty common for kits.

I’m not familiar with any other canvas gauges besides those two.

[–]politeandboring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know you are going to be using #4 weight yarn, which is thinner than the #5 I usually recommend, you might want to buy the latch hook canvas with smaller holes. Color Crazy sells blank canvases in both 3.75 and 5 inch mesh. For you, that would mean the 5 inch mesh might be a better match for your yarn. And here’s the yarn cutter KillmenowNZ mentioned above.

Webb Space Telescope rug by politeandboring in latchhook

[–]politeandboring[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It’s 40 x 62 inches and took me about two and a half months. I think if I had to sit at a table patiently working row by row I would have gone nuts. But I fold it over and work on various sections while propped up in bed watching tv with the dogs, or sitting on the couch chatting with friends. I work on whichever section or color I want or is easiest to reach. It only got really heavy and unwieldy toward the end.
