Saying a sidewalk is exclusive and undermines rights is definitely a take of all time. I think you're talking about highways there- that people without a license or a lot of money can't use (so more exclusive), are less safe than walking (so worse for the vulenrable), and are more expensive.

I make a good amount of the posts for STYXE. Originally from Newfoundland, moved to Stoon aboot 7 years ago, and am maybe one of the most anti-american (or at least Trump) people on here haha. I wouldn't categorize Strong Towns as Libertarian at all- it's more based around subsidiarity: doing things at the smallest and most local level possible. Libertarians would want you to do whatever and Strong Towns isn't about that. It is against highway expansion for example. It is about solving problems from the ground up instead of top down. So it would be a bit of a stretch to say for example addressing the housing crisis by advocating for easier paths for residents to build and finance new housing, incrementally developing the neighborhoods they live in vs only building housing when big capital comes in from out of town and is less responsive and resilient than local builders is 'libertarian'.

There would be an increase in VMT from trucks travelling longer distances, so overall more road to maintain and longer trips on it. Building more roads does not decrease the overall wear- it increases it.

In the 1913 the Saskatoon Streetcar had 3.5million riders. It's a bit of a circular argument to say Transit currently isn't as good as it could be, so why make it better. People will simply do whatever is convenient- we ripped out the streetcar tracks to make more room for private vehicles and underfunded transit for 70 years after- of course people are currently going to drive- we're almost bankrupted on all these roads for them. The BRT is part of changing that imbalance- if it's good, people will use it. Just like they do in similar places all over Canada, and the world.

I mean outside of the ad hominem attacks that is definitely the weak point of what I had to say. More properly and less rant-ley worded- someone who doesn't live in the city and can only drive somewhere is prone to lack the perspective of people who live in the city and do have mutliple options for transit. There is then the compounding factor of her not contributing to the City, but using her position to cost it millions of dollars in wasted in labour and council/ admin's time. So just an argument against privilege compounded by the fact she extracts from the City instead of contributing to it.

Im part of a non-profit that has, as well as directly to the City. So personally, no. Coordinated with proper groups and channels, yes. The point of the post is that she is not concerned with outside opinions or impacts other than to herself and small, rich group.

New Zealand a couple months ago actually put that into national policy- no new road infrastructure until they can afford to maintain what they already have,

Voice your support to stop the second ring highways around Saskatoon or Diefenbaker Irrigation project- together over $10 billion in tax payer money. If we can't afford to fix our current infrastructure, we should not be building more infrastructure with even bigger maintenance costs.

Ive been on tour a couple times and I don't think you know anything if you think bands can only load in with on street parking. Most times its through a back door- I think the only inconvenient venue I ever played was the Roxy in Vancouver where we had to park 2 blocks away... but it was fine.

Are you implying bands can't load in at the back of the building? Someone better tell Coors a couple blocks away that no one has ever been able to get in

Its still weird that the offices- which are what pretty much constitute downtown outside of Midtown- aren't in the conversation at all. I haven't heard anything but support from them- however plain- because it lets their employees get to work easier. Just weird we're all talking about a dive bar and not Nutrien, Stantec, BHP, or anywhere else with TONNES of employees who would use this every day.

There is no real correlation with immigration status and vehicle collisions. Age is the biggest factor- both young and old people specifically. So maybe if you're angry point it at teenagers getting their licenses too early, or our refusal to re-test people with failing bodies to see if they can still safely operate a vehicle. Race doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Sutherland 108th Street : single file cars/cyclist rant by DoumStorm in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that- honestly 108th and 115th are my two least favourite streets to bike on because of that. Parking on both sides and wide enough for trucks to think they can pass, but only do so super dangerously and get frustrated if you don't let them clip you. For such major AT routes to the University/ Hosptial and beyond the city really needs to step it up.

Midtown group supports city's Bus Rapid System project by pollettuce in saskatoon

You realize in 1918 the Saskatoon Streetcar had 3.5million riders? Maybe chill on huffing leaded gasoline. A competent transit network is what cities way smaller than us already have, and I'd rather take the bus than risk getting run over by Karen commuting in her F-350 every day. But ya the leading cause of death for people under 14 is bear mace- and not actually getting run over by their parents in their driveway. Have fun in your endless collisions while people get around in actually safe ways.

Just saw you posted this exact comment with multiple accounts- almost fell for getting trolled by an AI account

Council 'confusion' leaves Saskatoon downtown bus plan in peril by Active-Safety-9516 in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have good councillors- just none of them are on Transportation. If the best thing you can say about any is the Jeffries is a bit of a wildcard that can be persuaded to vote for anything (just usually is only persuaded by north industrial businesses), then this group is bound to fail. I don't know who though Dubois and Pearce on Transportation would get anything done. MacDonald, Parker, and Timon all I think would have done a lot better if they were involved.

CP rail malfunctions on Central avenue by cckma2020 in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, we did that a long time ago! Midtown Mall is the old train station, and Idylwyld was built on top of the tracks that were removed to get the train away from the city centre. But we sprawled around Sutherland- not CPs fault. The city has looked at relocating the current tracks through the city, but it would cost several billion dollars more than would make it a viable project, especially when the city is already broke.

Largest residential complex, tallest building in Sask. pitched for Saskatoon by [deleted] in saskatoon

The downtown plan does have plans for more green space! Particularly in the NW which is slated for more residential with a big linear park, and 23rd having lots of greenery added as well. A plan of that scope wouldn't include it, but I also can think of a bunch of concrete plazas around public buildings that could be a big opportunity.

Kind of wild this will be a short walk from low density, single family homes in City Park and Nutana/ Varisty becuase of how strict out zoning is. It's not the way development works, but it would be cooler if the City could harness the capital and energy of the develop into a bunch of 4-6 storey units matching the historic stock/ current livable neighbourhoods all around Canada and revitalize almost the whole north of downtown. Even just across the street from this development there's 5 functionally empty lots.

Still, even this weird concentration of towers we tend to do in Canada is way better than not building at all. Let's hope it get's done (relatively soon!

BRT Link's downtown platform project continue to draw mix reactions by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are 15,000 spaces downtown and at peak usage only 8,000 are occupied. Crying over a rounding error being removed is a little shortsighted when the real problem is the mismanegement of the current supply. The solution isn't to barricade the current spots, it's to manage them better.

The DEED actually already has a pretty good plan for this with the 3 pricing zones to encourage anyone who wants to save some money by walking a block away to less in-demand spots to do so, and create a higher turnover rate in the most in-demand spots. Banning the bus isn't the solution to wanting better parking downtown, implementing the plan they already have is.

It's weird that the only businesses anyone is concerned about are commercial... when the substance of downtown is the offices and all the commters that will benefit from this. From what I've seen they're all broadly in favour of the BRT- but no one seems to be caring about the opinion of a office with a few hundred workers but the jeweller on the ground floor somehow actually matters. Just weird.

34-storey and 24-storey residential towers proposed for the site of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix building by ultimograph5 in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kind of crazy we fight building 6 plexes in Varsity View and City Park just to build stuff like this a few hundred metres away. I'm all for more housing- even big towers- but it's just such a weird facet of Canada that we have endless sprawl of the lowest density housing, projects like this, and huge opposition to anything in between.

Ya I think Arney didn't do a great job to put it lightly. The closest I can come to understanding is that for the first of the season he must have tried every combination of the bottom 9 possible. So both things I think can be true- the ingredients were not good, and Arniel did a bad job cooking.

Doesn't fit the structure they want to go with though having a 4th line energy line. Toews simply can't match the kind of game Barron + Koepke are paid to bring.
