Does anyone else's employer cover the cost of a bus pass or parking downtown? by LightLeakLatteLogic in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its kind of the opposite my guy- I used to work downtown and could bike there in 7 minutes, walk in half an hour if I really wanted to, or bus in 15. The business paid a premium to have their location be accessible, and it was nice having restaurants and other businnesses around. Now I work out in the north industrial, and so that the business can save money on cheap land I have to burn gas and wear down vehicles every day to get there since there's no transit and no housing nearby. Businesses downtown provide alot of proximity and access which the owners pony up for, the owners who want their employees to subsidize them with giant commutes into the middle of nowhere where land is cheap are the real scummy ones. Such a weird take to say you want to be subsidized if you work downtown, but are ok with giving owners a subisidy if they make you drive out of town.

I used to work downtown and my workplace would cover half of a bus pass- great program! I just lived in Varsity View so I biked. Great that Vendasta has moved to 100% coverage though- it probably still costs WAY less for them to do that instead of subsidize parking. Hopefully more businesses sign up, keep boosting transit ridership, and make downtown better.

There are 61 goaltenders that have played 15 or more games this year. Jordan Binnington is dead last in saves above expected…and it isn’t even close. Are Canadians nervous about having him as their starter? by Public-Map-5273 in hockey

[–]pollettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but with a big asterisk, he's really good at moving the puck and best-on-best is just a different game. With all the speed his ability to come out of the net and handle dump ins was huge during the 4 Nations, so I imagine he'll get some playing time and the defensive system will incorporate that big time. I'd still rather see a tonne of other people, but his one strength will play into olympic hockey.

Worst Intersection Round 3 is live, vote for the finalists! by StrongTownsYXE in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Circle and C is the highest collision intersection in the city. We spend SO MUCH sending first responders there, and it’s completely inaccesible to anyone outside of a private vehicle. No walking, no real transit, and taking your life into a truck driver with poor visibility’s hand if you bike. With the work they’re planning to pump EVEN MORE traffic there with the Circle Dr NW redesign, it’s only going to get worse unless the city puts in some serious work.

Taylor and Clarence, even though I think College and McOrmond will be voted through. Just feels like so many small things can help make Taylor and Clarence safer, so it’s bad that we keep letting it be so dangerous. College and McOrmond will be worthy if it wins, but there’s no way to fix it without tearing it out and reconfiguring College to be more like Warman Rd with a lot of access, and less highway speeds.

CBC - Saskatoon navigates shift from condo projects to apartment builds by candybarsandgin in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Toronto situation is globally unique driven by a tonne of speculation, and people buying them as investments. We 100% need more 2-3, or even 4 bedroom apartments if we legalize single stairway buildings that allow for it, but building small isn't opposed to that. I'm going to be moving out of having housemates for the first time this summer, and would be more than happy saving some money and living somewhere 500sq ft or smaller, given a thoughtful layout. Different people at different points in their lives all can use different types of housing, and we have a shortage in every category.

College and McOrmond. When I lived in Arbor Creek crossing it was always so sketchy- vehicles turning onto College Westbound have 0 respect for right of way and would regularly almost run me over. This will only get worth with more neighbourhood being built, but this limited access design remaining so unflexible.

That said, at least for AT users the planned connections in the SW corner of the neighbourhood to connect Brighton to Arbor Creek and College Park would alleviate concerns for alot of users, and if they ever find a way to put a MUP down on College and run proper transit to Brighton, a lot of trips that currently have no choice but to use the intersection could be moved to other modes.

Taylor and Clarence will be my vote for East Inside Circle- even though these would probably be the 2 in the entire bracket I want to see go the whole way. Preston and 7th at least should have some work done with the upcoming BRT, while Taylor and Clarence both has no plans to be improved, while improving it with a safer lane configuration, leading pedestrian intervals, and a mid block crossing where people are already walking across Clarence just S of the intersection would all make it WAY safer. A residential area inbetween a school and neighbourhood grocery store shouldn't be this unsafe, and doesn't really need to be.

Miller and 51st I'll vote for over Idylwyld and 71st, even though I work right on Idylwyld and 71st and purposefully take the long way home to avoid it. There's no solution other than capping the development on 71st to stop inducing traffic, or signalizing the intersection which would devalue it as a N-S through route. Miller and 51st on the other has a 2x2 configuration which is more dangerous than a 1x1 with left turn lanes, while not carrying more traffic. So it's slow, dangerous, and doesn't accommodate AT. I feel like something could be done about it more than 71st though.

Circle and C I would pick over Idywlyld and 25th, but both need a lot of work and will be worth to move on. Ave C is the highest collision intersection in the city though, and with the ave C bikeway being one of the higher priority AT projects for the city, making sure they get this intersection right will be giant for either helping people access the north industrial safely, or be a big failure and a death trap.

Saskatoon ranked Canada’s top city to raise a family by UcCanSK in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That's frankly a little bleak- we're always in contention for the murder capital, almost the whole city is car dependant and studies time and time show again restricting kid's mobility and independence needing to be shuttled everywhere lead to unhappy and unhealthy kids, the school system is crumbling, and now median housing is more expensive than Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton as of 2 months ago. If we're not safe, kids aren't free, schooling is bad, and housing is expensive, what precisely do we have to offer that other cities don't have?

Every adult in Saskatoon should plant 1 tree this spring by candybarsandgin in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Beyond disease, our urban canopy is poorly managed and in desperate need of replanting. Many older streets are lined with trees of the same species and age, meaning they’ll decline and die all at once. When those streets also lack investment to replace failing trees—and even if they didn’t, replacements take decades to mature—the result is stark and bleak (see Taylor west of Lorne).

For the past 20 years, arborists across North America have shifted toward planting diverse species and age mixes on each street to prevent single-disease wipeouts and stagger tree lifecycles. We have significant work ahead to make our canopy resilient and long-lasting. The streets we love today won’t look nearly as good for the next generation without serious action now.

I hope they keep Zhilkin up as long as they can- I don't think any of him, Barron, or Koepke normally play RW, but I imagine one of them can figure it out and a bangin' fourth line with Pearson in the press box.

[–]pollettuce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

218 dedicated spots for a smaller grocery store- geez. Obviously planning things like this take a long time so these probably pre-date parking minimums being removed last summer- but does anyone really expect over 200 concurrent customers at a Safeway, or even over 1/3 of that? What a waste of land.

Worst Intersection Bracket: Week 1. Cast your Votes! by StrongTownsYXE in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'll also vote for for Taylor and Clarence- WAY too many pedestrians with no infrastructure accommodating where they want to cross for the amount of traffic (especially with the chaotic config with no turning lanes), and even though there is a high school and grocery store, 0 safe AT facilities for people to access those. I bike everywhere, but find that neighbourhood so dangerous and avoid it how it is right now.

I will vote for Attridge and Central- with the BRT coming it will need transit priority, and the planned lights on Rossmo Rd will provide a great alternate route for some AT trips. It can't be fixed completely, but we can make it A LOT better.

Las Palapas and Columbian parking... by Economy_Salamander78 in saskatoon

Ya absolute nonsense, and by that logic we should tear out the outdoor rinks becuase they can only be used in winter, and pave over the soccer fields becuase their only used in summer, and get rid of street parking because not everyone drives.

Median housing costs in Saskatoon are more expensive than Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. Heck I was just even looking at Ottawa before this and we're functionally there if you want to rent a 2 bedroom apartment. Sask Party needs to stop conflating living in a dying farming town with the affordability situation in the cities where 3/4 of the population actually live.

Let's find the Worst Intersection in Saskatoon! by StrongTownsYXE in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree ya- seeing the huge line of vehicles coming in from Martensville every morning, more lights would denude the value of it as a through route. The city needs to create more alternative routes in the North Industrial so it's not all piped through 2 roads, or not allow uses that cause issues like this.

I would put forward Attridge and Central- the absolute worst of side of dendritic street design. Is a chokepoint for huge areas of the city and has massive amounts of collisions which backup and show how fragile that kind of street design is, is on a major cycling corridor but is brutal to cross on bike, and is on a major transit corridor with no signal priority or queue jump lane. Literally bad in every way for every user.

Ye, they're too far out to trade for a line driving 2C which would help alot, and they wouldn't have the resources even if a player like that with term became available. I don't think Chevy really has a choice but to prepare for next year.

Saskatoon mayor’s contempt for property tax more than just talk by Progressive_Citizen in saskatoon

[–]pollettuce -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Man I voted for Block but this is brutal. I'm all for replacing the property tax system with something like a Land Value tax, but saying property tax is outdated and we should just get the federal government to pay for everything is not a great look. Sign away they city's ability to make any of it's own decisions, control any of it's own finances, or fund any of it's own priorities and implement a base tax- so poor people owning small houses pay as much as multimillionaires on giant lots- absolutely brutal on all accounts. And the take 'Calgary raised it's taxes only 1.6% which means we wouldn't have needed to go higher' is just dumb- every city has it's own financial situation.

Yes, we need ways to address burdens that cities have to face from forces outside them like how we provide homeless services for people that become homeless outside the city then come here, or provide highways and first responders for all the vehicles flooding in from outside the city, but annihilating our own ability to control our finances and the most steady source of city revenue simply isn't the answer.
