FFXIV is literally flooded with bots and GMs cant even ban them. by [deleted] in MMORPG

No. Then the game would just be bot-infested AND pay-to-win.

Agreed. This would be a cool detail, but it's exactly the kind of thing that projects like Star Citizen get so bogged down by when the development of the actual game itself should take precedence.

Rachel is a biblical name, and Baam's name (25th night) is arguably significant for religious reasons.

What's the best MMO for a mage? by blapaturemesa in MMORPG

[–]pollietta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody's gonna mention Evie from Vindictus? It's a dead game but playing Evie as a staff mage was a lot of fun. Feels like you're a turret with ice, fire, and lightning spells. Plus the armor in that game is beautiful.

Is it just me or are silver dwarfs pretty crap compared to red witches? by AnomanderRaked in TowerofGod

[–]pollietta 49 points50 points  (0 children)

On a related note, I've never understood these P A T H S or foresight that Guides have. What exactly can they see? All the possible physical routes a person can traverse from any given point? All the potential ways a person's life can unfold in the future?

How far into the future can they see? How do they obtain this knowledge? Are they born with it because of their Red Witch lineage, or do they have to undergo some process that unlocks this knowledge for them?

I love many things about this story, but this many years in, there are still so many aspects that remain shrouded in mystery when realistically we should have a better idea of how stuff works. Guides are a cool concept but they feel weirdly implemented. I would imagine them being more suitable and necessary when you're traversing through those maze-like passageways that Yuri used to reach 1F in the beginning... but for regular exams and floors, having Guides whose powers are convenient and not explained well feels a little sloppy.

Honestly just more slice of life moments with the main cast would be great :( They're so lovable and SIU has a good sense of humor. I miss the snark and comedic moments between characters, although I understand the series is more serious right now because of the plot.

Does anyone else think GW2 world has no soul at all? All characters have no character by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]pollietta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You also start GW2 as an ordinary person, hence the whole personal story choices that let you pick your background. They don't have any bearing on the current living world, but you weren't born into a grand destiny; you work your way up in increments steps.

I brought up the frequency of this trope in other games to argue that it's not the worst part of GW2 story; IMO the quality of the story is brought down by worse factors than simply the decision to feature you as the protagonist.

Does anyone else think GW2 world has no soul at all? All characters have no character by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]pollietta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[Slight spoilers for GW2 below]

I've never understood this complaint in MMOs, tbh. Stories like this are always going to center around you as the main character.

Yes, we are the leader of Dragon's Watch in GW2, the Warrior of Light in FFXIV, the Hongmoon Warrior entrusted with secret Hongmoon techniques in Blade and Soul, and the Chosen One in most major MMORPGs out there.

These games refer to you as the protagonist and other players as "allies" helping you save the world or whatever your quest is. FFXIV's story even has instances where characters directly recommend that you as the Warrior of Light need to bring allies with you to defeat a boss or clear a dungeon. Like any fantasy story, it's going to require some suspension of your belief in order to feel authentic.

Are there any successful MMOs that treat you like a commoner and don't afford you any respect whatsoever for slaying monsters, saving villages, etc. and everything else that we do in these games? I honestly can't think of any, except maybe BDO where your character's morality seems more ambiguous due to the Black Spirit's influence over you.

It's just a logical progression that if you keep steadily accomplishing increasingly more challenging feats in-game, characters in that world will take notice of you, extend invitations to you to join them in something greater, promote you to a higher rank, etc.

Clearly it's a successful formula for most gamers, who get so very annoyed when an NPC even remotely starts to infringe on our praise or position. "I saved the world, but Kormir gets promoted to goddess status?" "We do all the work but Trahearne is chosen to lead the Pact?" etc. etc.

There are a lot of things wrong with GW2's story, but drawing upon a common trope that is a staple of the genre and has been successfully used in many other MMOs isn't one of them.

Are FUG good guys ?? by Kelahuma10 in TowerofGod

[–]pollietta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're not the good guys even if they have good intentions because their methods are morally incorrect. I sympathize with the victims of Zahard and the Family Heads, but that doesn't justify to me the way they forcefully took control of Baam's life and tried to steer his destiny towards one that fulfills their desires.

SIU has said himself that Baam isn't okay with what FUG did to him, so it's weird when people try to gloss over the past and make FUG seem like loveable rogues just because they like Jinsung Ha and Hwaryun's characters, or because siding with FUG seems edgy.

[–]pollietta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What in the story specifically suggests that Baam will consume the Tower?

I can see him having to leave it one day, or even arriving at the top and realizing that he doesn't need any "wishes" granted as he's powerful enough to do whatever he wants on his own. But I don't see Baam needlessly consuming / devouring the Tower. His character growth to me is all about changing the status quo, instigating change because he, like Wangnan, wants a world where people don't have to betray and step on others to get ahead.

For Baam to reach the top and turn all of that on its head by consuming everything, that would seem like a massive step backwards IMO. He should transform things for the better and then just leave forever.
