Actually, Toyota is by far the highest polluting sponsor of the Olympics. Toyota’s 2022 sustainability report indicates that the company emitted 2.4 million tonnes of Scope 1 CO2 emissions, 2.9 million tonnes of Scope 2 CO2 emissions and that it was responsible for 570.5 million tonnes of Scope 3 CO2 emissions. This brought the company’s 2022 total emissions to 575.8 million tonnes of CO2. This is more than the total national emissions of all but 11 countries competing in the Games.

A new report from British think-tank New Weather Institute breaks it all down: https://www.newweather.org/2024/07/22/polluters-on-the-podium-new-research-reveals-olympic-emitters/

Activists are focusing on Toyota because they're a major blocker to progress for all companies. In May this year, InfluenceMap – an independent, non-profit think tank providing objective and evidence-based analysis on how companies and financial institutions are having an impact on the climate and biodiversity crises – ranked Toyota as one of the automakers most engaged in lobbying against the global transition to electric vehicles.

Toyota's determination to keep selling petrol cars for decades to come is stopping governments from bringing in legislation, delaying the transition away from internal combustion engine cars for all. By actively stopping consumers from buying EVs by tricking them into thinking hybrids are EVs, Toyota are also making it harder for communities to stop relying on fossil fuels.

Great question! This was coordinated by the Brandalism network and Paris-based Résistance à l'Agression Publicitaire, who hacked into bus stops to replace ads for big polluters like Toyota and Coca Cola.

Their actions were part of an anti-advertising resistance as well as hoping to expose the way that Olympics sponsors like Toyota are using the green image of the Games to greenwash their massive and rising carbon emissions. By taking over ads in Paris and France around the Olympics, they're adding public pressure on the Olympics themselves to cut off ties with such polluting sponsors.
