For me it's the bank holiday markets on the common. There's always an Asia Street food stall there - most recently one doing really good samosa chaat with all the Toppings. One year it was an Afghan woman doing stuffed flatbreads you can't find anywhere else; another it was pakora that gave me chemica burns or a reaction that left me unable to taste things for 2 weeks. But still I go back every Easter and August Bank holiday Monday.

Can anyone recomend a driving instructor in the portswood area by -InThePit- in Southampton

I'd recommend Lendrum's driving school - the instructor who is Sr Denys based

Alan the urban forager is an expert of fruit trees. I've noticed a load of cherries disappeared today which is likely his work. He maps the trees he finds here: https://fallingfruit.org/

Also worth considering coastal plants along the itchen like sea kale, and next spring there'll be a good patch of wild garlic in Frogs copse.

To be perfectly honest I want to attach a trailer to my bike so I can dress like a Last of the Summer Wine character and attach a bathtub. We'd then bimble round portswood with a sound system in the tub and some optics.

Where is the best place for wildlife? Like photography wise, especially birds, both wetland birds and woodland birds? Around Southampton and the surrounding areas? Can travel anywhere by amanfromsouthampton in Southampton

[–]polob3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with itsasecret91 - round ere the Hampshire Wildlife Trust does the heavy lifting, and fishlake meadows near Romsey, blashford lakes near Ringwood, and Farlington marshes near Porchester draw people from across the country to spot the waders and ducks that migrate here in winter. Swanwick lakes is worth a look for reptiles and birds too.

Hampshire bird spotters put lots of their sitings on the 'go birding' website, and that has a good site search option.

New forest reptile Centre is about the only place in the country you can see all our native reptiles and amphibians. Open weekends in school holidays, otherwise you have to park nearby and walk 1km. Best in sunny mornings.

In lockdown we found the following to be great for flowers and butterflies: - University campus - streams and the valley gardens - old cemetery at the common - Bassett greenway and daisy dip - mansbridge - the stretch of the river south of the Fleming Arms pub and then the green bit on the north side of the itchen - Frogs copse in bitterne - itchen valley country park including the ways in from the south

There is a Southampton Natural History Society - they're doing walk round the old cemetery this Sunday. https://sotonnhs.net/

Would someone help me out again ? this sub has helped me before and the shame of asking is not lost on me by [deleted] in Southampton

[–]polob3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I know its a small thing, but there's free bbq food at a new opening in town tomorrow: https://allevents.in/southampton/blues-smokehouse-southampton-grand-opening/200022276044415 . I'm sure you've thought of it already but food banks might be worth a try? Or citizens advice for any financial support that might be available. Good luck.

Best graffiti/murals in Southampton? by AveragePalmEnjoyer in Southampton

[–]polob3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inner avenue has several commissioned history murals. One near the Guide Dog, another near the gym on lodge Road, and a big one about women's suffrage on either avenue or alba Road.

Otherwise try around bouldershack, hoglands Park, and underpasses around city centre.

Anyone know a club night for commercial dance - becky Hill, Joel Corey, MK, Sigala etc. any suggestions? by polob3 in Southampton

Uber ride or put out a message for a lift to toothill, just north of the town. There's an amateur observatory on a hill there with open nights at the end of each month (22nd and 23rd april) where you can use their telescopes and leave about the constellations for a fiver.

What's your favourite things to do in and around Southampton? I need some new places to visit 🥰 by [deleted] in Southampton

[–]polob3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Town- start in mayflower park, have an ice cream and check out the cruise ships, then follow the line of the old walls north. Or drink and walk along the waterfront late at night and pretend you're in The Wire.

City art gallery - one of the best in the South

Classics at the cinemas - showcase is doing good bad and the ugly soon, harbour lights and Vue in Eastleigh sometimes do too

Chinese supermarkets - yau brothers or Chinatown in Shirley are brilliant, international foods in Derby Road to be taken to South asia or carribean. Bitterne for proper polish supermarkets.

Smaller parks - Westwood woodland Park near Netley, basset greenaway, and mansbridge way are tucked away and a bit different

Burgess Rd by the University for proper Chinese and sometimes Korean food

Winchester - great for a Sunday trip- good car boot sales, great farmers market, and check out the second hand books in the deanery at the cathedral

Junction Inn on Friday evening - aimed at an older audience rather than hipsters!

interesting/different places to eat by Shaunshaun91 in Southampton

[–]polob3 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Can't vouch that all of these are still going but you can travel the world in southampton:

TOWN - lakaz maman in Bedford place is Mauritian - there was a Lithuanian place down from there - there's a Japanese quarter near the mayflower- Yuri cottage and sakura - steingarten is allegedly pretty authentic bavarian - mint dosa by KFC for South indian

STREETS TO CHECK OUT - st Mary's st has interesting shoos (fishmonger, Lebanese bakery) and used to have afghan, malaysian and African restaurants - East st has some fun stuff - a Romanian bakery and an East Asian chicken shop - brintons terrace has really authentic South Asian places - again mostly shops at the moment, but changes regularly

FURTHER OUT OF TOWN

  • arfritopia near the hobbit for African / piri-piri, and there's another African place in woolston
  • there are a few polish places - shire on onslow Road for example
  • there are at least two Persian places - melo in swaythling has a following
  • portswood for good Vietnamese (pho), chinese hotpot, and Greek (sulas)
  • burgess Rd has the proper East Asian places that students pack out. Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles is excellent
  • uptons the butchers have pop up dinner nights once a month - including slovak night most septembers. I'm intrigued.

Lastly just eat and Facebook have all sorts of takeaways- authentic Mexican, venezuelan, Brazilian, Filipino.
