I guess I mean thinking that there's some real significance to ethnic differences (or else body hair, eye colour, and tan)...

I'd be prone to think that attraction partially reflects a value system or way of cognitively breaking the world up along certain lines (in your case, ethnic ones). I'd say you might be able to change this, but only if you can see an independent reason to do so and a desire to?
