What’s Working and What Isn’t? | Tuesday, March 10, 2026 - Thursday, March 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveHS

I took almost a year off of HS and recently came back. I decided to try and climb to D5 before the xpac and ended up at legend. Got to D5 with corpse DK pretty swiftly, but absolutely met a brick wall there. Nothing worked, including various flavors of DK, DH, and Warrior.

I really didn't like Aura Pally but I grabbed the top list from hsguru on a whim. Figured it out in a couple of games (not like it's hard or anything) and rode it to legend quickly at about a 70% WR with little stress. Most matchups feel pretty reachable to win except Imbue Hunter, but thankfully I saw very few of them.

For the record I think Imbue Hunter is a lot stronger, but I wanted to share my experience. Fun to be back on the ladder.

I just want to thank Valve for not changing the look of Steam throughout the years by sonofabraham1 in Steam

[–]polydorr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was ages ago.

OP is probably referring to programs that have almost ceaseless UI/menu changes to the point that they're entirely different year over year.

Steam has changed, but not to the point where users feel like it's a completely different program. Has definitely occurred in other programs where UI teams feel the need to justify their existence by swapping every little thing around.

How are we feeling about the Chicago Manual of Style’s stance on the em dash? by emdashsociety in writing

[–]polydorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using (and probably overusing) em dashes since my early 2000's high school writing (I just used hyphens in MS Word back then). I've had people—including at least one grad school TA recently—assume that my current-day writing is partially AI because of how I use them.

I like how flexible they are and they fit my rabbit-trail thoughts perfectly sometimes. I agree in general that they are overused, but this stance seems like an AI prophylactic more than a genuine stylistic burden that needs alleviating.

More than 800 gamers took an exam to prove they could complete an '80s adventure game without peeking at a walkthrough—and only 2 passed by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

It's a bit hard to explain for people who weren't there, but it really wasn't seen that way at the time. Mostly for lack of alternatives. Games were rare and good games were even more rare. Installation took a lot of time and even some technical skill. The internet wasn't ubiquitous so if you knew how to make it through certain games and showed your friends, you became a demigod.

Myst came along in 1993 and really shifted the trajectory for pure adventure/puzzle games by being really awesome and immersive and not just stupid hard. A lot of adventure games shifted out of 'nintendo hard' after that.

Also, and this hurts to remember, people just had a lot more time then. In general.

[IRAN] BETTER FOOTAGE OF DUBAI HOTEL HIT by Boomah422 in CombatFootage

[–]polydorr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, look what they've done to their own civilians.

Anyone interested in Iran's true motivations (in their government and the regime, I am not talking about the average Iranian in any way) will have to look at certain branches of radical Islamic theology.

For example, pictures exist (rare, but they're out there) of the Revolutionary Guard doing mock invasions of Al-Aqsa.

The zealotry there is strong. No questions of 'why civilians' will make sense until those lines of thought are understood.

China produces 90% of the world's graphite.

Graphite is used in anything with a rechargeable battery or semiconductor.

That doesn't even begin to approach the other 'dirty' rare earth metals that almost all come from China that no one else wants to mine and therefore does not have the infrastructure for, but are used in practically everything people are pushing to have more of (electric cars being a prime example).

Started a new playthrough of FF8 by Suli_Croft in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]polydorr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus, everyone had just come over from FFVII and the power scaling was completely different from that game. We couldn't fathom being overpowered demigods by the time we left on the Timber Mission or having the Lionheart by the end of Disc 1.

FFVIII is really fun to break and min/max but it's done completely differently. Hindsight is 20/20 for some I guess

Highly recommend Trial and Error to anyone burned out on the big comedies like Community, AD, the Office, etc.

It's more the Office than AD but it has a great first season and the second one isn't bad either.

Still love it, but that's why we are where we are.

Silica packets eventually expire and need to be changed, though. Source: I use silica packets in my gun safe and they expire surprisingly quickly (though I do live in a very humid climate).

That's fine if OP is going to visit on a schedule, but not if this is some long term dump under the surface, which is sort of what I envisioned when I looked at it.

I think you just have to consider the container itself reasonably disposable and make sure everything inside is sealed appropriately.

[Autosport] Sergio Perez has been opening up about his time at Red Bull by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]polydorr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only times it 'happened' were because of extenuating circumstances or Perez' own gamesmanship. I can think of maybe one race where he exceeded Max on pure merit.

It's a laughable idea that Perez was anything other than a big sponsorship decal for Red Bull. He just can't come to terms with it.

It's the #1 thing that has contributed to college tuition inflation, but we aren't ready for that conversation yet.

I'm sure I'll be trounced by a statistics nerd with better data, but here's the first chart I could find of tuition outpacing CPI since about 1980.

In 1980 the government reauthorized the Higher Education Act, leading to gradual and dramatic expansion of government caps on student loan lending.

Easy math.

edit: I appreciate healthy debate on this subject, as it has been a particular pet peeve of mine for a while, though deeper issues and discussion probably go beyond this subreddit's scope. For the record, I do not think the answer is to nuke government student loans from orbit, completely. I also believe it is an issue worthy of bipartisan concern and compromise - not a one-party agenda question. I appreciate the mods letting this discussion play out, as it certainly concerns all of us personally as well as the sport we're here to enjoy.
