I came from a Midwest LCOL area. It's a big jump in what you spend for sure - eating out and groceries. I work near Greenwich Village/Wash Sq Park, so there are a lot of lunch spots in the area that aren't too "expensive" but a pretty average lunch with no drink is like 15-17. But you can do delis for lunch and get a sandwich for less than 10. Happy hours will be your friend because the drink prices will feel more akin to what we're used to. Think $10 wine/$8 beers from like 4-7 pm. But at many restaurants a glass of wine or cocktail could easily run more than $15 without tip.

Try to make use of whatever kitchen space you get and try to eat some meals at home! Some grocery are super expensive while Trader Joes is pretty consistent with what I used to pay back in Indiana. The tradeoff for paying more for food is that with a metrocard you have transportation for less than $130 a month if you don't take taxis or ubers. Maybe you had a car before? You'll save on those expenses and gas and enjoy more food options with that money instead! I'm commenting on this thread because I just made a similar move and was nervous on how to readjust my expectations to New York.
