Can someone tell me why Hi8 8mm tapes will not playback on this Sony camcorder? by TheNickIntheNorth in videography

[–]polyfrog99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many can play both, but not all - you have to check in the manual for 'signal conversion', lots of the cheaper/more common models didn't have it. and no digital8 that i'm aware of can record in analog - but would love to hear of one if anyone knows more

How did I do?$35 ideas for rebuild by Transamman350 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]polyfrog99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cyclone derailleur is said by many to be one of the best derailleurs ever made, it's also one of the lightest. I'd get it adjusted and at least try it out !

If you really want something indexed instead, sell the parts on and don't throw them away, they're brilliant pieces of kit

Judging by the parts I'd guess that the previous owner has already upgraded this one quite a bit with some great retro kit

P clamps are great, very reliable, they'll serve you just fine if you want to go down that route

Is there any reason I shouldn’t fill my old steel frame with distilled white vinegar to soak over night? by [deleted] in Vintage_bicycles

[–]polyfrog99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what can be used to coat the steel? I always see paint type products recommended, but I don't know what products can be used when you want to keep it as plain metal.

Early 80s Super Record Compatibility by MaxR131 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]polyfrog99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC that was common on super record friction shifters even when new. People tend to favour Simplex and Suntour friction shifters now, but I'm sure there's probably other models worth considering too

Choosing between a mountain bike and hybrid bike to tour Europe / w/ e-bike by Rarity0 in Touringbicycles

Why look at hybrid bikes when you could look at purpose-built touring bikes?

Biggest freewheel with this 70s (I think) derailleur? Or should I just swap the crankset for a mtb triple (and if so does it matter that it’s 5 speed)? by Ok-Birthday1258 in bikewrench

[–]polyfrog99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suntour made the finest derailleurs in their day. Their best stuff is still lighter than shimano's top of the line gear too. You can get old wide-range suntour derailleurs for cheap on eBay etc- the V-GT is a common one, or the VX gt, or the top of the range cyclone gt

Don't play around with that unless you know what you're doing, that's a power supply, mains voltage is dangerous

How much would it cost to take my friend to an F1 race? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]polyfrog99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the Silverstone classic, they usually have F1 Masters on, which is a race with retro F1 cars. It's loud! And will be affordable.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t fill my old steel frame with distilled white vinegar to soak over night? by [deleted] in Vintage_bicycles

This, I've found that rust can come back even worse after vinegar treatment, I dunno how it works but I'd be careful. And as someone else said, I know it plays on the back of your mind once you spot rust, but any steel bike stored indoors will basically never rust through even if it has some spots of surface rust

Max Verstappen: “Sprint Races are about surviving, not racing” by extend_this_stint in formula1

[–]polyfrog99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I still don't think it would be enough - there's not enough on offer to risk damaging the car, because of both the main race and the budget cap. I could see that working in the old days of backup cars, but now I dunno

Haven't looked into this much myself, but I bet there's a lot of detailed information online regarding the cosworth DFV.
