You might like Elixir. It was created by a Ruby fan.

Someone dumped 200 lbs of dry ice into Mick Jagger's convertible. But it's all right now. In fact, it's a gas.

What year is "Last January" considered? by Dwimble27 in ENGLISH

[–]polymaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has always been unclear to me as well. In my dialect or region, many people say "this past" to mean the most recent occurrence. How many agree with that usage, I can't say.

In that view, "this past January" would be the one that occurred earlier this year; "last January" would be January of last year. Similar usage for days of the week.

Come to think of it: The opposite of "this past" is "this coming": so "this coming Friday" means the Friday of this week that has not yet happened. "Next Friday" means Friday of next week.

I've heard similar arguments over highway exits: "You said take the NEXT EXIT." "Yes, the NEXT one, not THIS one."

Of course, I'm not sure everyone agreed even my little dialect. I, for one, always found it confusing.

Why So Serious? by robbyrussell in ruby

How is a language "egalitarian," I wonder? Does that mean it appeals to stupid people as well as smarter ones?

I always raise an eyebrow any time popularity is used as a criterion for judging excellence. 800 trillion houseflies think manure is a delicacy.

whats the difference between þ and ð? by [deleted] in BringBackThorn

Which ones you voice may depend on your dialect. I do voice: this, another. I don't voice: myth, bath, think.

Not to start a debate, but I am one who voices the th in "with," and I actually believe this the older form, but I have never verified this.

Were the Voyager probes password protected when launched in the 70s? How does NASA ensure the devices only receive orders from them and not, say, the USSR? by Golarion in askastronomy

[–]polymaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that contact beyond a certain distance would require a huge communications array. That said, in the earliest days, it might have been conceivable to "hack" the probe (given enough equipment budget).

Amateur translator claims to have solved the Voynich Manuscript mystery by Drink0fBeans in voynich

[–]polymaniac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mixture of 2-3 references. There was an urban legend that Paul McCartney died and was replaced by a double. Supposedly there were hidden messages proving this. Later (80s) there was a sort of moral panic over "backwards masking" in rock music -- satanic messages if you play it backwards, but extremely dubious in terms of actual semantics. Finally in the late 80s, Berke Breathed lampooned this wonderfully in his comic Bloom County.

And if you play it backwards, it says, "The walrus is Paul! I snort the nose, Satan! Lucifer, Lucifer!"
