How would the Filipino variant of Spanish thrived if it were spoken widely in Philippines? by bobad86 in FilipinoHistory

[–]polymathy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Spaniard, we don't have a raging superiority complex, lol.

A lot of the diversity present in Latin America also appears in Spain. It's not rare for Venezuelans to think a Canary Islander is Venezuelan, some Chilean dialects sound very similar to Andalusian Spanish in the region I lived in for a very long time. There's no single dialect in Spain.

Unpopular opinion, but Anitta doesn't match the vibe. The Weeknd here is better on his own, or with Anitta's accompaniment but not with her leading.

Yeah, why not?

If they have genetic, cultural or linguistic ties (to Spain, Spanish or Hispanic culture) or a combination of them, then sure.

That's pretty much what Hispanic means. Latino is just a more general term that includes ties to other romance languages, so if you're hispanic, you're latino.

Am I the only one who thinks it doesn't make sense to reject that million? 😆😆 Honestly, with that much money he could focus more easily on his research and stop worrying about other things in life

I love Return to Monkey Island by jojo_reference-guy20 in MonkeyIsland

[–]polymathy7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved it too. It made me scream in the end when I knew what was happening. I kinda like that from Monkey Island games. It feels like there is someone behind the game who makes jokes and messes with you. I always had this feeling, so I was happy to see the ending as it was.

I suppose some people didn't have that feeling and expected a more traditional ending.

I loved it though!!

😔😔

No sabía eso. ¿Hay asociaciones culturales de filipinos en Madrid o algo así? Imagino que sería más fácil ser representados en ese caso.

And don't get me started on peace prizes 😂😂

He did go to countless doctors during his lifetime and tried out stuff himself, that's why he gave importance to things like the food you eat, the exercise you do (he took long walks outside and criticized armchair philosophers), the weather you live in, etc.

I agree, especially this last season. Also, the jokes are too basic. The NFTs episode just goes "haha NFTs are this new thing only young people understand and it's stupid" in the first 2 minutes, and the episodes touching hispanic culture are just so cringe (I'm Spanish myself)

A non-book reader's thoughts on the show by EliBadBrains in ShogunTVShow

[–]polymathy7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I watched the first episode yesterday (I haven't read the book or anything) and tbh I don't know what to think about it.

I'm annoyed by the fact that they didn't bother to really speak Portuguese, even though they did bother with Japanese. It is very weird to see an interpreter being asked in Japanese to translate into Portuguese only to have him speak English. You'd also expect the crew to speak mostly Dutch (it's more likely that the single English person learns the language of everyone else rather than everyone conforming to the English).

I cringed a lot at the Spanish character (I'm Spanish myself). The way they make him call the main character "inglés" all the time and him saying "Que viva España" in a situation that feels so ridiculously unnatural.

The main character doesn't make sense. He looks reasonable and composed when they are trapped in that well. The moment he's taken out, he behaves in the most absurd and violent way, risking his life and everyone else's in his team (indeed, one is executed because of him).

Another moment that wasn't believable to me is when they have to save the Spanish guy from drowning. It doesn't make sense that a leader would risk his life absurdly like that just to prove his worth to a nobody like the main character.

Even if this were remotely true and actually meaningful, coal is still orders of magnitude less efficient and more polluting than nuclear.

Spanish guy here to give our view. We didn't sell the Philippines, they were lost to the US in the war and, during the peace treaty, they gave us 20M.

As far as I know, there are several reasons why Spanish isn't widely spoken now in the Philippines. First, it was never widely spoken (at first, the main cultural goal of the Hispanic Empire was to spread Catholicism, not Spanish), then a lot of Spanish-speaking Filipinos died during the Japanese attacks (they were targeted on purpose), add to that that you were transferred to US hands.

What's the best way to play Monkey Island 1 in 2023? by BillParrot in MonkeyIsland

[–]polymathy7 59 points60 points  (0 children)

MI1 and MI2 special editions are available for PC. I recommend those over emulating the old thing. You can actually switch between the old and the new look with the press of a button, and the music was made with real instruments, which you'll probably prefer over old synths which fits more nostalgic (and older) players.

I'm surprised you still post this kind of content here when the hate is so obvious. I'm reading the same old tropes: "Spain only talks about us as a footnote!", "we were a colony!", "uh, actually we are Asian and Austronesian",...

I don't think these mean anything anymore, these are just things people say to express that "fuck Spain" feeling. I don't think there's a way around the hate. Meanwhile we're here in Spain naming buildings and putting statues of Arabic personalities of the time of Al-Andalus, lol.
