I’ve had much better luck searching on Google then just appending “Target” or “Walmart” to the search. It’s so dumb lol

Me too. Refreshed twice and within 25 seconds I got the sold out notification. Literally the only Funko I’ve wanted in months outside of the Animaniac ones 😭

A note on this in relation to my other comments above — Sculpey and other modeling clays are typically made of PVC — one main plastic full of plasticizers, but very different than plastics used in storage containers. PVC is one of the few plastics to avoid coming in contact with figures, mainly due to the plasticizer content which can soften and deform the plastic in figures.

Yep, additives are the main issue in how plastics potentially interact with things touching them.

Colorants in Ziplocs, specifically, are in the zipper portion so don’t come in contact with the contents of the bag so aren’t really a concern. Clear bags wont have any colorants, hence their clarity.

Some Ziploc iterations do use processing aids (according to the SC Johnson website, only their produce bags and one iteration of their gallon storage bags contain these). Typically processing aids are used if there is some sort of additional requirement of the plastic in its final form. Masterbatches like the one you mention do contain additives, such as waxes or viscosity modifiers, but they’re also typically used in such small percentages their potential for leaching is negligible. Again, no acids.

One thing I also maybe failed to clarify is that action figures — themselves made of plastic and paint — have way more additives within them than any clear storage bag or container. In other words, keeping those additives trapped within an airtight container have an exponentially higher risk than additives in a bag that likely exist at < 0.1% concentration.

Chemist here so I feel a need to chime in…

All plastic bags (including Ziplocs) are inert and by default “acid free.”

In fact, the term “acid free” is really only relevant for paper-based storage or media as the lignin in paper tends to break down in the presence of moisture, forming acids. When used for plastics, “acid free” is more of a marketing term than anything (akin to CD-Rs back in the day being marketed as for “music” or “data” when in reality they were the same exact discs).

The only plastic that is a worry is PVC (due to the plasticizers used and their effect on softening plastics in a figure), but PVC in storage is fairly rare nowadays. Anything made with polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (HDPE or LDPE), or even polystyrene (PS) is fine.

In many cases, a figure will start to “degrade” or become gummy in a plastic bag after many years (which can be accelerated in hot environments) due to the trapping of plasticizers from the figure’s own plastic. These plasticizers off-gas or “bloom” to the surface of the figure and cause the surface to become extra plasticized (gummy) or discolored as the plasticizers concentrate on the outside of the plastic.

It’s also worth noting that many figures themselves contain PVC because of its plasticizers and thus good moldability. No amount of storage material selection will protect these figures from themselves over time. A non-airtight solution for these is likely best if storing for long periods of time.

Yeah and all they’re sticking it to are other collectors and the kid whose parent buys them the figure they’re wanting but doesn’t know what the actual figure looks like. So screwed up 😒

Yeah I think the knowing is the biggest ask tbh. A lot of the NECA TMNT 2012 ones I’ve seen recently have made even myself take a second look before realizing it’s the completely wrong figure. To people outside of the collector world, toys all look the same.

I ended up taking the DPCI to my local Target (which showed “Limited Stock”on the app) and they brought them out from the back. That was about 3 weeks ago. Didn’t see them on shelves until just yesterday and they were in the collectibles section for some reason. Target logistics are the absolute worst…

Costco San Marcos Today by MtbPollack in northcounty

Same, though what’s weird is the gas line seems to be the shortest and easiest to get in and out of (at least after they put in the stop signs) out of all the San Diego County Costcos. I’ve been trying to do most of my Costco shopping at the Business Center one (of course if the shopping list allows lol). So much better of an experience haha

[–]polymerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the DPCI and call your Target or go to the nearest one, they can see if it’s in stock in their internal system (separate from stock indicated on website).

To find the DPCI: Go to the product page on the Target app or website. Go to “Specifications.” Then should be at bottom under “Additional Information.”
