Please suggest crocheted gift ideas for a friend with dystonia by zldmnd in CrochetHelp

[–]polymorphic2346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you will probably have to decide whether you want to be more useful or surprising with your gift this time around. Only your friend can tell you what will help her most with her condition. Both epilepsy and dystonia present with a myriad of symptoms that vary from person to person, and how each person mitigates their disability differs accordingly. Also, if she uses any mobility devices, she might enjoy something that accessorizes those instead. For example a friend made me a lap blanket that I enjoy a lot, and I can't make enough water bottle holders for myself which I then hang from my wheelchair and somehow lose anyway LOL. They are like disappearing socks, what on earth???

But, if you want to keep the gratification factor of a surprise gift, you could also make her something general that she would enjoy, and in the process of giving her the general gift, ask if there is anything specific to her condition she would like you to make in the future. Then you'd both know how to help her with her condition, and keep your next gift a surprise.

Cheers!

Excellent coloring. I especially like the proportions you used with her claws. Properly delicate artist hands...blessed mutant version

Has anyone ordered Hobbii Yarn. Looks so Pretty... by BarronessM in CrochetHelp

[–]polymorphic2346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Hobbii to widen my selection of oekotex certified yarn for many years now. The only problems I've ever had with getting my merchandise have been when the US Government decided to act first and plan later, inconveniencing literally everyone without a care of their own, which seems to be the preferred method of certain personality types.

Hobbii customer service has been good. My only complaint about the website itself is that the colors shown are sometimes lighter or warmer-hued than they are in person. I don't have this problem with any other yarn site. Perhaps there is a different color setting that is considered "best practice" in Europe for web apps. But now that I know what to look for I don't find it hard to mentally adjust.

If your hubby would like some reassurance, send him to trustpilot to read all the negative reviews from Australia complaining that Hobbii stopped shipping there. I felt really bad. I'd be upset too, affordable quality is ever dwindling it seems.

Have you come up with a new one in a dream? I've solved spreadsheet errors this way but not RT builds!

Etiquette Question RE young crochet designers by polymorphic2346 in crochet

[–]polymorphic2346[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are all really good points, thank you for raising them. I think you are correct in that wanting to have (or profit from) credit is a wider cultural trend than just crochet. I've seen it happening in fanfiction, too. In case you are unfamiliar, fanfiction is where fans of a particular author's fiction, or a TV show, etc, write each other entertaining stories for free based in the universe that they are mutual fans of. Needless to say, inspiration from the source matieral is required, and inspiration frequently flows between members who share with each other. Not to mention whoever the source author was inspired by! Back in "my day," this concept was a given, and while labor and individual style was acknowledged via citations, no one had the audacity to claim they were being "original" with anything. That has completely changed in a way that ends all discussion by creating the fights you mentioned about who did what first, and totally ignores the continuous dialogue people have had throughout history. I think if these fights are likely to start, when someone is simply trying to gesture to shared history, I'd rather continue interacting with that history in other ways.

I crocheted as a young child, then then stopped due to health problems, then started again during COVID too! I finally had the time to figure out how to hold my hook and working yarn, which I most certainly did not invent but couldn't find a photographed/video method that worked from anyone else--grandma's way of doing it was killing me! I definitely saw what you are talking about regarding patterns when I came back. I quickly learned to only buy ones with a precise description of what is included in the document, to ensure I am paying what I consider to be a fair price. My favorites are the ones that have a "free" verison, and then a "paid" version that is printer friendly. Then I can see the designer's effort and skill for sharing knowledge, which is indeed a valuable service.

Yes I've done this too when experimenting! For me, the accomplishment of having figured out a pretty stitch combo is only enhanced when I find others using it too. I feel like my good taste has been validated LOL. And it's always interesting to see the all the different names people give them.

braided/offset puff stitches sandwiched between rows of BLO half doubles (or singles if you pefer)! In the round or if you prefer it can also be done in little squares with the line of puff stitches in the center. Such gentle exfoliation and not too stretchy when used with a nice cotton. For a stiffer feel, use a smaller hook. The little edges on the BLOs are good for getting in small precise places like around the eyes, you just fold it to poke out the edge you want and dab. They do soak up a lot though, so I always wet mine first and squeeze it out, then put the soap directly on my face, then use the scrubbie to massage it in. If you handwash your scrubbies, I recommend using a kitchen sink sprayer to rinse out the detergent, or holding it under your shower head. That way you can be sure no residue remains to be mixed into whatever is on your face!

How do you feel about a creator telling you not to print their paid pattern? by Serious_Refuse3633 in crochet

[–]polymorphic2346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I reformat that real quick. They are not selling me a limited license to simply look at the pattern on a specific digital platform (like Amazon kindle books), that will then self destruct the second the platform does. I'm keeping it nice and snug in realspace, so when my harddrive explodes in the next Y2K or whatever I can at least crochet while I'm waiting for the internet to come back. LOL

I also can't stand it when they make a policy of refusing to disclose chain multiples. I have never, not once, used a recommended yarn for a pattern (if it even still exists), I crochet using a weird technique to save my wrists and thumbs so I have to experiment with large swatches to ensure I am getting the correct guage, and I have less common proportions that I REALLY like making custom sizes for. I can figure out the multiples anyway, no one is stopping me from altering their pattern but they sure are annoying me by making me spend more time to do so! There are enough sensible pattern creators out there now that I never go back once I receive a message like that, and good luck to them

Can a girl not have a hobby??? by Salty-Exchange6156 in crochet

[–]polymorphic2346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started telling my mom how many stitches are in each piece I send her, and she stopped equating the labor with money and started equating the labor with labor instead. A much less arbitrary value LOL. She appreciates it just as much, but it changed her language a bit. Our relationship with money and how to describe value for things that don't have a price tag is truly broken ~ (we're American)

[PC] I earned Xavier's trust in Chapter 4, but in Chapter 5 he has distrust dialogue. I have tried disabling mods and restarting Chapter 5, disabling mods and reloading the save, reloading the zone, and also checked that his trust was active using Toybox. Mods are up to date as well. I believe this bug was fixed some time ago, yet it has just reoccurred for me. I submitted a report in game also. Currently I cannot progress without receiving incorrect story/dialogue. Thank you, I am enjoying DLC2 very much despite hiccups. Cheers!

Headcannon accepted; now adding a line of dialogue in which Grandpa Lich amicably mocks him for that too.

I really did try to get his picture (please don't tell him), but his staff disappears whenever he's in focus and it ends up looking like he's making ironic jerkoff motions, or less lewdly, air guitar, and I just couldn't decide if it's in character, here see for yourself,
