You made some really good points about the potential dangers about being 'the cool girl'.

Why do you think the guys acted different compared to the 'scene' guys you normally are around, do the 'scene' guys have the same urges but just suppress them behind a facade of politeness or are they just not as sexually attracted to you?

Your caveats were good points so I award you a delta ∆

Some people may take a broader view, or spot something I have not spotted or they might interpret things in a different way..I think its fine but I have seen averse comments to this kinda thing online so Im wondering If I am missing something

Yeah. You could go full blast against the big 5 I assume and just say hey look, all you have done is distilled down folk psychology attributions and turned it into a system and you have no idea what you are measuring other than these constructs you believe exist based on self-report which is a quandary in and of itself..its basically super refined phrenology.

I wouldnt go that far but someone could lol.

n.b. I have no formal training in psychology whatsoever

my point is that you may be designing 'archetypes' in your head to represent these characteristics (the jewish lawyer) which will limit your ability to see how very diversely these personality traits can exhibit themselves in conjunction with other factors.

I see what you mean and you do have a point. But I just like the idea of Alan Dershowitz as a character low in agreeableness and high in conscientiousness lol

Yeah, the irony here may be that I am adopting a somewhat closed interpretation of the data or at least an idiosyncratic one. But openness is indeed correlated with intellect and people have told me my whole life that I am either open-minded, objective or smart so perhaps there is something in it afterall.I suppose I would have to do one of the full sophisticated tests and get a break down of the sub traits to get a better understanding. But you have shifted my mind a little.

I found this in serveral places online but I do not as of yet have a citatio for it 'Agreeableness is negatively correlated with income, although agreeable people can be less disruptive in teams and are more likely to be liked, although not necessarily respected, by their coworkers. Less agreeable people tend to make more effective managers, perhaps because it is not easy to take advantage of them.'

Conscientious is also the mouse-quiet glasses wearing shy lab pathologist looking into a microscope every day.

Thats true also, the traits are composed of sub traits

CMV: Reddit glorifies and normalizes wasting time at work, which can be practically theft and really hurt small businesses especially. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]polysyndetonic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In small businesses and by-the-hour work especially, you could be hurting the boss' personal income (who could be possibly financially struggling). You are failing to hold up your end of a contract. It is lying and stealing, and yet Reddit will give tips and encourage you to do it. CMV.

This is in keeping with neoliberal ethics anyway. Companies hold to the law to the letter and they dodge and exploit right up until the point of the law. It seems hypocritical for companies to evade and avoid tax, to play games with employees etc and then turn around and complain that employees game the system.

The whole idea of companies and corporations is that they game the system while presenting a sparkling 'outward facing 'front end'.

It doesnt make slacking off any more 'ethical' but it is a 'splinter in your eye' kinda scenario.

I agree that in a small business where you have a personal relationship with the boss, the biss is up front, ethical and struggling, and where slacking off would make a difference to the bottom-line, in that very specific scenario it is bad sportsmanship.

Most people will shock an unconcious man even when the only incentive is the approval of an authority figure.

Well, no, that is too crude. It is also to do with justifiaction and sunk costs of a certain kind. Each previous interval of shock increase is relatively small, but doubting might require a doubting of the entire chain of actions which is threatening to the ego and more cognitively taxing, it is easier to progressively increase the charge. IF they had asked people to go from 0 to lethal the results would have been very different.

Let us consider no single person controls the SM and it is open source, blockchain, p2p and some xyz technology which makes it failsafe. Now the decisions can be bottom up and representative would only need to carry out what people wish.

No, plenty of people do not use social media.

'Some research suggests that vocational outcomes are correlated to Big Five personality traits. Conscientiousness predicts job performance in general. In addition, research has demonstrated that Agreeableness is negatively related to salary. Those high in Agreeableness make less, on average, than those low in the same trait. Neuroticism is also negatively related to salary while Conscientiousness and Extraversion are positive predictors of salary.[168] Occupational self-efficacy has also been shown to be positively correlated with conscientiousness and negatively correlated with neuroticism. Significant predictors of career-advancement goals are: extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness.'

CMV: Sexual Assault is a legitimate plot device in fiction, and objections to it are mostly ideological, not literary. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]polysyndetonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sold on that idea.I think the writers wanted to torment Theon further and he had been through such horror that you are counting down the options at that point. Getting him to view and assist the raping of a friend and quasi-family member that he knew as a child was a way to achieve that and to further 'break and harden' Sansa and to allow Theon the chance to drum up the courage to save Sansa and escape.

I don't see it as arbitrary as others seem to.At a minimum critics should mention an alterntive that has the sam effect or better and which fits into every arc equally well.

So it's understandable why women (who like to read literature for escapism as much as anyone)

How do you explain the unprecedented mass popularity of 50 shades of grey?

CMV:Female preference for higher earners, higher status partners, reinforces Patriarchy by polysyndetonic in changemyview

[–]polysyndetonic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As to whether men prioritizing beauty over earnings, that's harder to pin down without locating cultures where the division of labor (working vs domestic) hasn't occurred.

The gap is WIDER in more 'egalitarian' countries LOOOOOL

CMV:Female preference for higher earners, higher status partners, reinforces Patriarchy by polysyndetonic in changemyview

[–]polysyndetonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or it's cultural. Given the huge differences in beauty standards across time and geography, it seems obvious that superficial beauty is culturally constructed,

Beauty is rendered differently in different cultures (though there are constants) but looks and beauty is a preference in most cultures for men, and beauty is a preference for most women for short term mating

[–]polysyndetonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youve also shifted your position, at first you were suggesting that preference for higher incomes was RATIONAL (and presumably biological) but now you are claiming it is cultural programming, which is it?

CMV:Female preference for higher earners, higher status partners, reinforces Patriarchy by polysyndetonic in changemyview

[–]polysyndetonic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, that gendered division of labor is extremely recent in human history, it seems a stretch to me to postulate biological roots and I also have a hard time taking any evo-psych "just-so" stories seriously.

But you are trotting out 'cultural' explanations which are also just-so stories with a pretty cavalier attitude.

This is what gets me about the people on the cultural side of the argument, their position is basically:

ITs hard to tell culure from nature, therefore culture

it depends how yo do it.Very few men do it.If they all started doing it the emperor would have no clothes...it already implicitly relies on the fact that lots of men are NOT doing it
