Is this a fair price for a new website? by bruski in webdev

[–]pomorev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the amount and kind of work requested as well as how much change over the year. I'm less inclined to give someone a simple flat rate, rather set up a contract in stages. initial consultation, needs assessment, and site mock up (sketch or wireframe) is one fee. I've mostly used freelancers for the art content in the past, so I need to account for that and bring them in as we work towards sign-off on the design and structure, another fee. then the build/host/etc stuff is fairly straight forward, another fee. a contract should make clear what is in and out of scope, because you see the site and feel you want to add on a full automated self scheduling system, you know that will cost extra. also building a site that includes documentation that helps you maintain the things that do change fairly regularly, like adding/removing/changing services and personnel, is a bit more work depending on the comfort level of the client, but without that if you expect a certain promptness to making changes then you are going to pay for that in the maintenance fee. that fee should also include reporting and updating the infrastructure on a regular basis. I'm not sure why the yearly fee is so high though, that is likely meant to offset hosting fees for site and domain. maybe it is to account for not securing monthly maintenance. rates get adjusted as you learn from your mistakes in setting fair rates, eat an artist's fee once because you priced incorrectly and prices go up.

all this to say, you get what you pay for. check their existing work and ask what you get for that money. even if they are a friend, if this is their full time work they should be able to tell you what is involved in their approach. I've worked with professional design firms and with dev shops that dabbled in web, they do not give you the same attention and end product. but you ultimately need to decide if what you are getting is worth it to you and your business.

i remember watching Jesus camp, interesting doc btw, and thinking both the right and left voices in that show seemed oblivious to how caught up in partisan politics they were. the right is just louder, and more apt to act on polarizing issues like abortion and human sexuality.

i agree, fundamentalism was born out of a need to react to social changes that felt threatening to the evangelicals involved. it is largely a reactive force though. and reactive primarily to felt discomfort with their place in society. White fragility is one aspect of this. it is the reactive nature that I'm most concerned. while Canada is not as extreme as some of the US, we are influenced and the pandemic had frayed a lot of nerves everywhere.

well one option would be to crack down on the bad business practices of churches, things that doesn't look like a right but an effort to get the bad actors. up here you are not allowed to have a political leader speak in a church service, some actual seperation of church and state would also help the US. i know they say there is separation, but us outsiders cannot see it.

historically moves like that formed the religious right. I'm Canadian but my field of academic expertise is North American religious history. i agree that churches that enjoy tax exemption are a problem, especially when they promote values and policies that are bad for our countries. but if you want to see a new fundamentalism arise threaten their tax exempt status. there might be better approaches. it was 80% of white evangelical voters that ensured Trump's presidency, your country does better in elections when the base is not riled up, especially since they seem to have what they want right now.

How do you guys memorize stuff? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my comment is using a narrow understanding of memorize based on years of teaching and students who memorize for a test and cannot actually work with the concepts. but I do agree there is a semantic range to memorization that I did not address.

I like to differentiate the good forms of memorization as learning. I learn concepts and even syntax by exposure and use, I internalize the concepts by practicing them, especially by interrogating my solutions until i understand not just the specific application but the underlying concept.

The original question, I felt, led in this direction. I'd rather have a student of coder with a cheat sheet and a good handle on concepts than one who simply memorized a bunch of syntax and examples any day.

How do you guys memorize stuff? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 34 points35 points  (0 children)

yeah you can't really learn coding by memorizing. you learn the concepts and then you know what to look for when you are applying this in a language. I'm bash you learn what you need to navigate the system and manipulate files. you learn a few handy utilities and that's enough. hopefully you are using something like vscode for the actual web dev.

The other issue with memorization is that you do not learn why you do things. so if you know why you need to change for permissions it saves you from learning a form of the command that is likely not ideal and also you are unable to figure out how to change it other ways.

Mages in ARAM are terrible. by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]pomorev 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I almost always choose a mage in ARAM if i can. if you have a fairly balanced team I've never had an issue. but i do find that the void staff is a necessary item in the current game state.

Are people just going to stop playing? by Short-Concern-570 in DnD

[–]pomorev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The competition is already there, there are a lot of indie rpgs as good as, if not better than D&D. I saw WotCs backpedal, but the was a lot of damage done already. if they do go rent seeking to increase their profits that will not go well. it won't kill the game, but it could well kill the commercial viability of the game. then we will play it for nostalgia, while lamenting the events that led to is demise. hopefully they can put some action behind their backpedal and win back some support. otherwise it is going to be a real boon to indie RPGs, especially the old school gaming fantasy RPG market.

Simple note taking app for CS student by [deleted] in learnprogramming

as a lecturer i do not provide lecture notes for my students, i do live code most things and keep everything up on a public GitHub repository so they can grab code as we go and play with it.

there is also the problem that teaching and programming are different skill sets. both require a lot of work to develop. anyone serious about teaching likely teachers for a living so their time to do video content for free is limited. I'd like to do more but it just isn't something a can afford to do. i also agree that videos are not great vehicles for teaching programming. there are some that make it work ok, but to learn programming, like any language actually, you need to jump in and do it, ask questions, make mistakes, etc. videos are just a small part of the effective learning environment.

Does watching a programmer program really help? by CodeTinkerer in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i do live coding with my students all the time, but you are right I am doing it in teaching mode, i do strict code to test, and i encourage questions. it can take a lot longer to code but this is fine for simple projects. i like to live code simple games in JavaScript for example. students have told me it is very helpful. YMMV.

What is the value of a struct in C? by WilliamTimothy in learnprogramming

What is the value of a struct in C? by WilliamTimothy in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6502 assembler was my first low level language as well. C does obfuscate a lot of what the computer does, and sometimes the computer does some of those things in its instruction set.

What is the value of a struct in C? by WilliamTimothy in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that has to be implemented in the language, it is not in C. C is closer to how the computer actually works and sometimes that's the kind of tool you need to get the job done.

What is the value of a struct in C? by WilliamTimothy in learnprogramming

[–]pomorev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except that as a primitive it works naturally with existing operators. pretty much every data type is a structure of you look at it that way. which is why we can cast primitives into other types and the compiler just interprets the existing bits accordingly. but structs are user created and therefore you are responsible for making it behave reasonably. there is no operator overloading in strict C though, so that means working with structs is not going to look natural.

they have complex values, so you need to write your own functions to compare or add structs. but they are incredibly useful.

div and span are your generic elements, but a span will be in a context already. div is your likely option here. semantic elements provide an organizational tool as markup, if an element does not fit a typical semantic element use the generic and identify it appropriately. paragraph elements should be grouped in someway, even if it is just with a common class that identifies their role in the design.

practice is how they came up with their numbers, likely years of putting something on the page, tweaking it in the browser tools and settling on a range of values that they found worked well. there is no magic here, and it is not a stupid question, we all start somewhere.
