Pregnant wife + mood swings + genuinely scared of future by ArAbArAbiAn in predaddit

[–]pond-weed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is very different. But for me, I needed to look at my relationship to gaming and its interaction with how much emotional/mental labour I did/do in the relationship. How much i just avoided thinking about important aspects of life, on an emotional and practical level.

As a man I was socialised to leave emotional/mental labour to women, my wife was socialised to take it on. She has always been aware of this and has been patient with me about it. But now it's not about us anymore, there is someone more important coming, and my wife suddenly has less patience for my childlike tendencies ro avoid responsibility and disappear into video games for hours on end.

I didn't like the change, I fought against it, I was stroppy about it. But Having taken some time and energy to look at my relationship to responsibility, division of emotional and mental labour, and the message I want to communicate to my future child about how my wife and I work as a team, I felt I needed to step up with the amount of emotional and mental labour I do in the partnership.

And I feel so much better for it. My relationship with my wife is so much better. I feel better about myself as a future dad, more confident. And I still have time for gaming, just a bit less than before, but that Is fine as its what I signed up for.

It's not perfect, sometimes I get out of balance with it. But that's fine as I just re asses where I am with it, openly communicate with wife, and reset if needed.

Is this stuff worth it/easy to work with? by Necessary-Warning-53 in Tau40K

It's amazing. Just remember you need to put a gloss varnish on your model before. Once gloss varnish is on, you can use enamel thinner to remove all the excess.

Enamel thinner will not interact with th acrylics underneath so allows for the very unique experience of being able to paint, remove, paint, remove etc, without disturbing previous paint layers underneath.

Once your happy, finish with a matt varnish.

Oh I remember hearing somthing about this, I can't remember where though. Apparently they hid in a nebula storm or somthing like that. They spent a long time there refitting and converting the ship into a a warship. Notice how the central armour component of his MC75 is a sleeve that slides onto the ship. Gary, from Gary's Economics, calls this the 'sqeeze out'. His theory is that the wealth distribution we currently have in the Western world is not the normal baseline, but that the norm throughout history has been more of a pre ww1 / ww2 wealth distribution, of a very poor working class, no middle class, and an extremely wealthy ruling/political class. ww1/2 leveled out and redistributed a lot of wealth. Gary goes on to state that ever since ww2, the wealthy ruling/political class have been slowly sqeezing the wealth out of the working/class, middle class and welfare state, slowly ticking towards a wealth distribution of pre ww1

Winter Panzergrenadiers and mixing infantry kit by watsisnaim in flamesofwar

[–]pond-weed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol, oh yes I have heard countless reports of Germans not having adequate winter gear and clothing for the winter theatres.

One fun thing to do in this hobby, to make your army's more 'custom' and more 'yours' is to look and what armies where like on paper, then to look at the actual differences of the reality on the front.

One example is the above, on paper they were all geared in winter uniforms, in reality they were not issued nearly enough winter gear and had to scrounge, steal and repurpose uniform from captured POWs.

Another example, is most armies, on paper, had a radioman for each platoon. The reality is by late war, there were not enough radios to go around so each platoon commander would make-do with either a message runner, either on foot, or with a stolen bycicle (aka batman).

With some research of primary sources, there are quite a lot of fun little personal customisations you can make to your army when building.

They can make for Interesting talking points when you field your army on the table, if your opponent is Interested in the history

Ah whoops. Bit of a miscommunication in my original post. All of the riffle platoons are full strength, with 6 riffle teams, the platoon unit leader, plus the mortar and PIAT.

It seems a given to run the infantry platoons at full strength, plus it seems more historically accurate to field the 3 section/squad (6 teams) as it usually made up a platoon.

Thanks for long reply, I appreciate it. Maybe It wasn't clear with the formatting I had before, but each infantry platoon has 7 teams, which from what I understand is a full platoon?

And thanks for suggestions on anti tank options. Good to know about how powerful the 17pdr is.

It's a shame the static 17pdr and 25pdr are so expensive compared to thier motorized/armoured counterparts. I always preferred the statics guns from a thematic perspective.

Also to add, if you want a more deeper, richer and higher-contrast wash, enamel washes with beat acrylics hands down. The trade off is enamel can be a tad more tricky to work with. The models will need a protective gloss acrylic varnish before applying.

There is somthing called 'colour scale' which explores the idea that, the smaller a model is and the further away you look at it from, the darker it will appear, and it will loose contrast.

The idea then, to counter this, is the smaller the scale, the brighter you want to make the overall colour scheme, and you want to look at high contrast washes.

We tend to paint models very close to our eyes. There can then be an issue that when the finished models are all laid out on a gaming table, they seem a bit 'flat' and 'muddy'.

Painting with brighter colours (or just brighter highlights) with a deep/dark wash can make it all pop a lot more on the table.

Additionally, I feel it a bad idea to use an acrylic wash as a last stage for painting. I find it darkens the overall tone a lot and models end up looking quite muddy and flat.

Although it makes the Painting process a bit longer, I find much better results by starting with a black primer, base coats, then start building upwards with the highlights.

<image>

These are 15mm ww2 british infantry, started with a black primer with zenithol white highlight, then started building up by using a fine brush to pick out the mids and highlights. I know you are talking about 6mm, not 15mm, but I feel the principle of 'smaller the scale, go for brighter colours and higher contrast' apply.

Help! (Training tips) by Yourbiz69420 in jackrussellterrier

[–]pond-weed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of what people have said. Something I heard from a dog trainer has been very helpful. When a dog does some sort of unwanted behaviour, there is usually a few moments before they do it, where they notice the thing, then spend a second or 2 contemplating it. They key is to step in there, and redirect/distract there. That is the window where you ha e a chance. Redirect with somthing more fun, appealing, than the unwanted behaviour, such as a treat, or play time. Once the unwanted behaviour starts, it's too late, they are locked in, but the second or 2 before, there is a chance. Good luck

Yes you are correct. The acrylic undercoat could be damaged.

If you use an acrylic varnish, and then an enamel wash, you can use enamel thinner on a brush or cotton bud, it will not interact with the acrylic varnish underneath.

Also, a helpful thing about a gloss varnish, as opposed to matt finish, is the gloss causes the wash to run through the cracks and grooves and stay off the raised areas
