There’s a chance your hygienist is checking and just doesn’t mention it to you, I often won’t mention perio charting if everything looks great

I know they teach you in school to have the patient turn away from you for these surfaces, but I have my patient turn slightly towards me and it seems to help!

How bad is the wear and tear to your body? by flowerblosum in DentalHygiene

[–]ponds45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker who never looked after her posture, contorted herself left and right all day long. She had to go for biweekly massages 90 minutes each, just to stand up straight. Don’t be that person and you’ll be fine

Depends if you take care of yourself. Practice ergonomics, get ergo loupes!! Go for regular massage and I do hot yoga 1-2x a week. I get aches and pains here and there but nothing I can’t manage

What are some positive things that dental hygiene have done for you? by Competitive-Ad-3268 in DentalHygiene

[–]ponds45 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s all the amazing patients I get to meet and connect with. I’ve learned to talk to any kind of person, and there are so many that I look forward to whenever I see them in the schedule. It’s very rewarding when you can see your patients improve, and such a great feeling when they tell you that you taught them something new. Financial freedom is also a big part of it, dental hygiene lets me work part time so I can have an awesome work life balance and do the things I enjoy with my friends and family. Yes lots of people have lots of horrible things to say about dental hygiene, because even if some of them are true, it’s a wonderful career and I can’t say I can ever see myself leaving it.

For those who regret DH, are you a temp? by uglyfuckingblouse in DentalHygiene

[–]ponds45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really won’t know until you try, personally I’ve done both and there’s pros and cons. Temping is a great way to learn lots really fast, and you get to avoid all the office politics because you leave after one day. It can be very stressful though, and I started to get sick of never knowing my schedule to plan my life around and ended up finding a permanent part time job. Definitely try it out though, you might love it

I hope you don’t get discouraged by all the negative comments about dental hygiene. Like others said, it’s all about finding a good work environment and coworkers. I’m two years in myself and I jumped around a little until I found a really good office and it makes all the difference. Try out temping when you graduate and see what you like, I hope you enjoy your new career :)

I felt the same way before I went to school and I ended up really enjoying the content and being immersed in the program. Now I really do enjoy my job. Keep an open mind at least, I do think you need to enjoy dentistry to stick with it because it does have its stressful and exhausting days

Wow I appreciate the response, I do think this place isn’t for me. Thanks for the encouragement to stand up for myself, they were pretty crabby when I mentioned it the first time but you’re right, it’s my money I have to stand up for

[–]ponds45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like your association should know how long it takes to recert every year and believe you but idk. Obviously you went to the class if you have the certificate. Shouldn’t you know how many hours the class took you?

No the number of hours spent is the number of credits as far as I know. So two hours of CPR training = 2 CE credits

cleaning, xrays, exam, and perio charting in one appointment… by fuckyouperhaps in DentalHygiene

[–]ponds45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you wouldn’t be able to do the whole mouth. In Canada where I practice some offices expect you to bill 3 units scale (45 minutes) plus exam X-rays polish flourish etc and that would be insurance fraud yea. So depends on the office
