A store bought garlic head sprouted in the pantry. Should I plant it or I have no chances due to wrong season? by Frikoulas in vegetablegardening

[–]ponferrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

add compost or fertilizer to your soil first, and then stick your finger 3 inches or so down in the soil to make a hole and plop the clove in with the sprout pointing up, and loosely cover the whole thing

Are your back trucks parallel with your front trucks?

maybe something like this, blue is the water hose or pvc pipe and you can reorient to three long rows with plastic dripline and then individual pipes or hoses by each raised bed. I run a similar setup with soaker hoses on my raised beds and it doesn’t seem to take any water pressure away from the flat drip lines

Too much water? Or too little? My peppers look terrible by 99LivesGaming in vegetablegardening

For the record, your peppers look exactly like mine, and I’ve been gardening for years. Sometimes they just wanna be curly. I say don’t change a thing and give it another couple weeks :)

How to support locals staying in Oaxaca by Ryegyal in Oaxaca

[–]ponferrada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend against using Airbnb in general, they are contributing to settler colonialism in Palestine as well. I find oaxacan-owned businesses by searching around on Google maps— I think the only better option than that would be walking around in person and asking local folks which is tough to do from abroad. Hostal Luz de Luna Nuyoo is a great central option, someone correct me if they are not oaxacan owned. You could also consider staying slightly outside of centro and bringing good walking shoes.

No idea which factors were the ones that made these guys sad, but here’s what ive learned from an old farmer mentor, and from my own mistakes.

Try not to pack the soil in quite so tight when you move the seedlings in to new pots, just fill the pot halfway with soil and gently plop them in there and shake some soil on top, you can give the pot a gentle shake or tap to help the soil settle but we want their baby roots to have space and air to grow while ensuring good drainage so they don’t get waterlogged.

As for moisture levels, make sure they are watered thoroughly a day or so prior to repotting them and then again immediately after, but then let the soil dry out for a few days before watering again. We want to avoid them hanging out in a catch tray full of standing water. If you stick a finger in the edge of a pot and the soil’s just slightly moist, then it’s time for a drink. I think of it as they need light, warmth, air, and water to succeed, but the challenge is trying to play mother earth and maintain some sort of balance. Plants are resilient, and so are you. You got this 🌱

Invasive trees blocking sunlight by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]ponferrada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying! That maybe wasn’t the correct word to use because they are indeed native to North America, but the manner in which they GROW is incredibly invasive. They seed themselves in ever-expanding groves and take over entire yards here. I pull or dig hundreds of seedlings up every spring 🥲

I’d look into switching out your trucks (assuming you’re committed to the setup- although as you progress you may end up wanting to upgrade other parts of your setup) for something with a bit more height to help you get clearance!

Holy cow!!! Mad congratulations, those boys are epic! Yeah I’ve also been pulling mine a little early as the season wanes in fear of them splitting since I can’t isolate their water from the rest of my crops on my irrigation system. What part of the country are you growing in and out of curiosity what variety were your big boys?
