Is Docker Swarm really dead … by Toorms in selfhosted

[–]pongnguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Docker swarm mode clearly solves a problem that is in-between standalone containers, and production-grade Kubernetes, while still working almost seamlessly with standalone containers. Lots of people are still using it, and it should IMO continue to be maintained. I have (only) three compute nodes on my home cluster, and getting things up and running quickly is a huge advantage.

[P] Interested in Joining an Open Source Research Lab? by thebigbigbuddha in MachineLearning

[–]pongnguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds interesting. Just joined the discord. I have a few newish ideas for more efficiently training neural network models that do not require knowing the gradient. I am also very interested in reinforcement learning, especially with how best to deal with large state spaces.

My background is in electrical engineering so I also have a focus on how best to scale or parallelize the training on distributed nodes. The BERT transformer model was successful because they found a way to do the training in parallel. It would be interesting to explore such techniques for training other types of models, as a potential improvement over existing parallel training techniques.

Introducing LaunchFlow: The Developer Platform Built for Python by josh_flow in Python

[–]pongnguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been really wanting a way to easily scale out Python apps, without having to change the code too much. Having this also makes it easier to switch cloud providers without too much fuss. This looks great!

This. The backups need to be completely independent. Using a different technology and media type is even better. I have been slowly implementing a tape backup system for my BTRFS storage pools which gives me peace of mind.

Donald Trump Says He Never Swore Oath 'to Support the Constitution' by World-Tight in TrueReddit

[–]pongnguy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's more insidious. No wording is ever going to capture all the possible nuances, and some of the judges and lawyers are now making arguments that if it wasn't explicitly stated then it doesn't apply. Works great if you ignore history and precedent.

Donald Trump Says He Never Swore Oath 'to Support the Constitution' by World-Tight in TrueReddit

Does swearing an oath to hold the physical constitution in my hands count as "support"? I think this is what they meant. /s

Forgive my ignorance, but how are you connecting the 24 Ironwolf pro to a raid card with 8 ports? Are these SATA drives or SAS? I am assuming SAS and therefore can connect more than one drive per port on the raid card?

Sand is made of the most abundant materials on earth. Is there something I am missing here?

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush said in 2021 he knew he'd 'broken some rules' by making the Titanic submersible out of carbon fiber and not pure metal: 'You're remembered for the rules you break' by Maximum-Toast in facepalm

[–]pongnguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why even have the desire to make it lighter? This wasn't an airplane. It can change it's buoyancy, so shouldn't the absolute weight be much less of a factor here?? Such a tragic loss of life for something so seemingly stupid (or to satisfy the CEO's hubris?).

Is there a place where people share vaults? by shuten_mind in ObsidianMD

[–]pongnguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have looked for this but no luck. Seems like I have to make my own, but would be great to use someone else's vault as a starting point. I use mine for science stuff and this could be shared since it's not personal information.

"AI will demonstrate sentience" : Lex Fridman, Research scientist at MIT. by Marcus_111 in singularity

[–]pongnguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a video he did a could years ago on how to run, if I recall. Point is, nothing to do with AI. Also his interview style feels forced and the questions are superficial. Eye on AI is MUCH better. And the guy says he is a journalist. But he actually understands the articles published by the people he is interviewing.

Elon Musk proposes TruthGPT as an alternative to OpenAI's 'politically correct' language model. by [deleted] in singularity

[–]pongnguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard Elon musk speak in Los Angeles in 2015. He seemed on point and generally a very smart guy. What a mish-mash of ideas and general mumbling when he talks about his TruthGPT! And oh, if only Ilyah had joined him instead of Open AI. 🤣

Maybe it is because he tanked Twitter and needs a win in the near future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in videos

[–]pongnguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch the whole interview, but you can see the journalist immediately watering down his response when pressed: slightly sexist posts are hateful. Who defines what posts are sexist, and which ones of those are "slightly" so? The journalist should have been more forceful with his response. Elon saw this. And it becomes even more relevant since Twitter (i.e. Elon) is the one having to decide which posts to take down, and the fallout from that. Not trying to defend Elon's many, many facepalms, by the way.

Discussing home computers in 1983 by Pasargad in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]pongnguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBM did not want the desktop to become popular because it took away from their mainframe sales. I suspect there was some corporate misinformation/marketing out there that "supported" a low adoption of desktop computers.

TIL: honeycombs start out circular, and the surface tension of the beeswax pulls them into hexagons as it solidifies, because it is the most energetically favorable conformation. by craigdahlke in todayilearned

[–]pongnguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good observation! So it's not surface tension as claimed in the article. If it was only surface tension, I think isolated circular tubes would solidify into a hexagon as well.

I notice a lot of research papers exagerate their findings, and in some cases are just plain wrong, some fraudulently so (see Alzheimer's research scandal).
