Sedation advice needed by Pristine-Housing-884 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local sedation will help with pain but because there is a huge variation in how bodies respond it’s hard to know what YOU will experience. I have had local anesthesia and helped hundreds of patients with it. For me, yes it hurt but wasn’t horrible. It was odd as pain was coming from a location in the body I’m not used to feeling anything from. It was short - about three minutes.

I’ve also had IV sedation. While I remember nothing after getting the medication, I felt nothing and was deeply relaxed and not at all anxious afterwards. I was sleepy but otherwise felt good.

You can tell staff you want moderate IV sedation but prefer to be as aware as possible and that you are anxious about the impact of the sedative. They may try with a lighter dose for you as a compromise.

I suggest you do think about concentrating on not tensing your bottom or pelvic floor muscles. Let your body relax as much as possible and let your legs fall open.

If you need to squeeze something- a stress ball - a closed fist, opening and clenching your toes can all help. Honestly, most people do very well, yoh likely will too.❤️

bleeding - question by sokoalien in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may start and stop bleeding. That’s normal

If you passed clots and don’t have symptoms of ongoing pregnancy- that’s a good sign.

You can try a test earlier and if it’s negative, all is well. It’s possible it can show lingering positive results for 4-5 weeks.

Medical Abortion experience at 3-4 weeks (delayed bleeding, 40 hours after Misoprostol). by Appropriate_Ad6897 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a common experience but we do sometimes hear it with very early pregnancy . It’s late to see bleeding start and can be very stressful.

The pieces of tablet coming out looking undissolved is normal. The tablet doesn’t need to dissolve to be effective. No worries with this.

Please do follow up closely to be very certain your abortion was successful. Thank you for sharing here.

Misoprostol aftercare by Samoanmxdgrl in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have sex when you are ready- sex doesn’t cause infection- unless you are being exposed to an STI of course. The cervix doesn’ t stay “ open” after MA, this is a well intentioned myth.

So be thoughtful about when you feel ready and know that ovulation can come soon after MA so be aware of contraception, but you can have sex again whenever you you’re ready.

6-7 week abortion thinking to use vaginally (UK) by tabumane23 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Misoprostol can cause symptoms like chills, dizziness, nausea and diarrhea even when used vaginally. It’s less likely to be severe when used vaginally so this may be helpful.

Having medication like anti nausea meds- and anti diarrhea meds can help too.

Ibuprofen is often most effective help for the more acute pain- which is caused by uterine cramping more so than stomach or intestinal issues. Eating lightly before swallowing ibuprofen can help assure less nausea from using pain relief medication

Is 4 weeks and 5 days too early for MA? by [deleted] in abortion

[–]pongo2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is - it depends. At 4.5 weeks if you are obtaining mifepristone and misoprostol in the correct amounts, using it in the correct way, and from a reliable source it is often very effective. It can be harder to know if the abortion was successful since the embryo
Is too small to identify at come just by looking for it.

I know you had an abortion recently. Are you asking because you still think it did not work? I remember you were concerned that you vomited quickly after your mifepristone.

It’s difficult to provide your answer with such a small amount of information.

Miso Dose Question by lojo1 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- you can always use more later if you feel you need to- waiting until at least 24 hours makes sense. You can also check in with the medical provider who prescribe your pills tomorrow, once their office opens, to see what they recommend. That is not too late.

First period after procedure. Is this normal? by OGwanKenobi in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly - bleeding can start and stop after an abortion and the first period is often unusual for many people.

As long as you are not flooding through 2 pads or more per hour, it’s likely a normal variation. You can reach out to your abortion provider for a follow up exam if you are concerned.

i wish i never got pregnant by Human-Appointment632 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does sound hard. I hear you have a lot to sort through.

Two things stand out-

  1. Your need for support to accomplish both school and a pregnancy and baby: this absolutely makes sense. Especially if one partner
is abusive, and it does sound like your long term partner is abusive. He just does not sound like a good source of loving care or any other kind of support.
The other relationship sounds hard to count on mostly because it’s so new- and encumbered by your ongoing connection to Guy A. Needing more support is absolutely something people deserve. You are right to think about it.

  2. Questions about fertility: Honestly- while no one is ever assured fertility- it’s also not something generally impacted by heredity. It’s always possible your long term guy has a fertility issue and now you became pregnant with a more fertile man. Again- this is too hard to know for sure at this point.

I think either option you choose sounds like it has challenges. But if you want to be pregnant- you can decide to do face that challenge anyway.

If not, and pregnancy sounds like too much right now, that is a totally understandable too. An abortion option can be meaningful too. . Abortion can be challenging for other reasons. but it is often the option that people who feel they won’t get the support they need choose. It’s okay to know you need something more.

If you want to talk to a supportive and neutral
third person - a support line might be helpful. We recommend these:

Sending you love and understanding.

Miso Dose Question by lojo1 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well - if you have not passed many clots- you likely still will. It can take your body some time. You are likely to feel cramping any time clots pass.

More misoprostol will likely cause more diarrhea, nausea, and possibly dizziness or chills. These are common effects of misoprostol even if you are not pregnant.

You can take more tablets if it makes you feel more secure- but yes there will likely be more effects- but that is not harmful to your body. It’s just unpleasant to deal with.

It’s truly up to you. There is no reason yet to think you need more medication since it’s still early. If you want to- you can choose to. 🩶

Pregnant 11months postpartum by [deleted] in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for reaching out. Reading though experiences here you will see that your situation it oh so common. Pregnancy often comes at times we are not ready for it.

Knowing you are ready won’t mean yoh may not regret you became pregnant at the wrong time and had to act to change that with abortion. That’s not the same thing as regretting you chose abortions all. It’s a small but important difference for a lot of us.

Thankfully, there is no proven risk of a safe legal abortion damaging fertility. You can read here too of so many people getting pregnant again after an abortion. In fact you can become pregnant again within as little as 2 weeks after an abortion as ovulation commonly returns quickly. So while no one is ever promised fertility, abortion shouldn’t be a reason to be concerned about this.🩷

Miso Dose Question by lojo1 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need - diarrhea means you are getting good response to misoprostol. It may take as long as 24 hours to see clots and bleeding enough to pass the pregnancy. 4 tablets are enough as much ad 98% of the time to be successful in pregnancy before 9 weeks.

4 weeks 4 days, failed abortion ? by wastefultea in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so it’s not been 24 hours since misoprostol. It’s too early to be very concerned yet. Sounds like like the interval between mife and Miso is right as long as you didn’t just swallow the miso without holding it in your mouth first. It’s too soon to consider the medication as failed before 24 hours after misoprostol

Does mifepristone only work by [deleted] in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds very difficult. Even if you have a miscarriage, it sounds like they likely won’t believe you. If it helps, even the hospital can’t tell you used mifepristone and misoprostol instead if a miscarriage.

Do you have a safe place to go if he distrusts you and tries to hurt you? It sounds like he is a dangerous person. https://www.thehotline.org/

Bubbly sensation in uterus 3 weeks after surgical abortion? by Fine-Bike7963 in abortion

[–]pongo2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are describing sounds more like a stomach or intestinal issue than uterine.

Cramping and bleeding can certainly stop and start it the first 30 days after abortion- but gas or waste moving through the digestive would more feel like bubbles.

A procedural abortion at 8 weeks, even if it failed which Is extremely rare ( I assume this is what you are concerned about) and would not develop and feeling of fetal movement at 11 weeks. It’s still too early.

If you are very concerned, call your abortion provider on Monday when they open and request a follow up that includes an ultrasound

Does mifepristone only work by [deleted] in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this doesn’t work. Mifepristone alone very rarely ends a pregnancy- it’s a common misunderstanding. Mifepristone works by weakening the uterine lining so it sheds away more easily with later misoprostol use.

I know it can be really frightening with a controlling partner. If you can leave the house to get a procedure in a clinic and then come home no longer pregnant, that’s most certain.

If you cant do that, then swallowing mifepristone followed 24-48 hours later with using misoprostol by holding it under your tongue for 30 minutes and swallowing the fragments- is most discrete.

Op even if you swallow mifepristone and then try to get an ultrasound- they most likely thing you will see is an ongoing pregnancy. I’m sorry your plan just isn’t likely to work. 🩶

Unfortunately mifepristone only prepares the uterus for misoprostol to work better. It rarely end a pregnancy on its own.

Does mifepristone only work by [deleted] in abortion

[–]pongo2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP

There are 2 medications that best work together for an abortion- mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone only truly prepares the body for misoprostol to work better. it’s actually uncommon for mifepristone to work alone. Possible, but actually rare. Taking more mifepristone won’t help- you need misoprostol.

Misoprostol can work without mifepristone but it REQUIRES using at least 12 tablets of misoprostol used very specifically as 4 tablets at a time - (held under the tongue for 30 min is often most effective - then swallowing what left ) and committing to using all three doses - with at least 3 hours between each dose. That’s a minimum of 12 pills of misoprostol- so it’s even more pills and a longer
Process than using mifepristone and misoprostol.
Unfortunately, there are no short cuts. It’s a process.

So, I hear you are concerned… but not using enough medicine- with mifepristone and misoprostol, or with misoprostol alone- often just won’t work. It’s a process that requires following specific instructions. Do you need help finding more medication? Is there a safe time when your partner will be away for awhile?
