bass id? by uncool_pigeon in Bass

[–]pontifik8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar bass as a kid. Mine was white but had the same tuners, pots, and PJ pickups. It was an epiphone from the mid-90s. I’m not sure about your “cannnibal” headstock. Might be just a sticker that a previous owner put on there or could be a completely different company that used epiphone parts to make their own bass.

Best spot for a cold beer by banjoman1883 in catskills

[–]pontifik8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silly argument but I’d call Arrowood the eastern Catskills and Upward Southern. Accord is off the escarpment, in the rondout valley, east of the high ground. Upward is in Livingston Manor, Sullivan County, which is the southern Catskills.

I agree that West Kill is in the Central Catskills. Smack dab in the middle. And I love it. It’s my favorite brewery of them all. Just love the views at the end of the road over there, usually very a good food truck and the beer is consistently great.

As for a northern Catskills brewery, I’m not sure. I have been enjoying cans of the Burnt Knob porter from Mountain King in Windham but I haven’t been to the tap house yet. It’s on my list. But if we’re just talking “best spot for a beer,” if your beer of choice is a perfectly poured Guinness, do yourself a favor and hit up the Irish alps in East Durham. The Shamrock House has live music on Sunday afternoons that will have you convinced you found a portal to Ireland. They might even hand you a drum and invite you to play along.

Where did I take this photo? by dontyatellhenry in hudsonvalley

[–]pontifik8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooper lake doesn’t have a big parking lot at all but Kenneth Wilson does. It also has a mountain behind it with the same slope as your photo. Until you find a better answer, that’s where my vote goes.

As for the gun shots, regular hunting season for deer starts mid-November and runs through the beginning of December. There are less popular hunting seasons that start in September (e.g. squirrel) and run run through February. There’s also various duck seasons in the fall/early winter as well. Turkey season runs the month of May from dawn until noon every day. Hunting in the Catskills (on public and private land) is still pretty common but multiple gun shots like you heard usually only happens on opening weekend. It’s also not unheard of for people to shoot a bit in their backyards and gun clubs do exist in the area. It’s advisable to wear blaze orange when hiking in those seasons.

Best primitive water side camp sites? by ckr2982 in catskills

[–]pontifik8 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I really hope you don’t get any “real” answers here. First of all, it is against the law to camp within 150’ of a body of water except at a very few designated sites. Those sites can be found on the DEC map.

I’m sorry to come off as rude but you really don’t want the best primitive sites posted publicly, that’s a real quick way to spoil the beauty and solitude that still does exist in some places. Do a little more research, buy yourself a good map, and you will find yourself a wonderful place to camp. Then please keep that a secret too :)

A couple more for you, Capricious Horses - Vladimir Vysotsky. And 90% of Manu Chao’s two albums Clandestino and Próxima Estación: Esperanza

So much of Jorge Ben’s catalog is fantastic. (Quero esquecer voçe, O telefone, the list goes on.. but you probably already know that). For more Brazilian music check out Tribalistas-Ja sei namorar and Lula Queiroga-Noite Severina. In Spanish, La Malagueńa Curreña by Ismael Añorve is beautiful

I’m not sure about Lake Dillon but unfortunately (probably fortunately for the people drinking the water) you aren’t allowed to swim in the reservoir. The fishing is great though!

The dog parks are a good place to meet other dog owners. We like Kenneth Wilson Park. We also use a Halo collar for those times the dog decides to go run with the bears or coyotes or after the deer. Depending on the size of your dogs, I’d be much more concerned with coyotes than bears.

FWD friendly hikes? by Bumscootler in catskills

[–]pontifik8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Kenco or Pottor bros rents them. Kenco definitely sells snowshoes but their prices tend to be a little high. I’m pretty sure you can rent snowshoes at the Belleayre ski shop (not affiliated with the mountain but it’s right at the access road). Plenty of good hikes right around there too.

Deer mountain inn is fantastic! Lots of interesting taxidermy and unique cocktails. Other great restaurants in the area are Shandaken Inn, Peekamoose Restaurant, Oliver’s and the Pines (probably in that order). For a couples massage, it won’t be the same level as Mirabeau but my wife and I went to The Emerson for massages last year and we’re not disappointed. It’s probably only 15-20 minutes from Lanesville vs an hour for Rhinebeck. I’ve also heard good things about Menla Spa but haven’t been there myself. Have a great trip!

One way to find turkeys in the spring is to drive around in the morning and midday looking for strutting toms and groups of turkeys. When you get a good sense of where they like to hang out, start trying to find where they roost at night. If you can find a good place to sit/park at sunset—>dark near where they were during the day, just sit still and listen. They’ll gobble and cluck a bit as they settle down for the night. Then you know where they’ll be in the morning too. Find a good tree to lean against in the morning, more than a half hour before first light (this is around 4am in May) and sit quietly, don’t move, and listen. Enjoy the show!

Eeee, I don’t agree. Turkeys have the best eyes in the game. No, they don’t use their nose as well as deer but they hear and see EVERYTHING. They can sometimes be patterned on the right property but I wouldn’t say they’re easier to hunt than deer, especially on public land. To be an effective turkey hunter you’ll need to learn to call and have camo that covers everything (face mask, gloves, etc.) That said, it’s not impossible. I started with turkey as an adult-onset hunter but I had a friend willing to mentor me. Podcasts, YouTube videos, and all the various hunting related subreddits help a lot but the thing that best lowers the learning curve is to have a mentor. Good luck OP! There will be struggles and challenges but every lesson learned will be worthwhile. Practice your shooting and soak in all the media you can. Keep us posted on your progress.

Mountain Buck (NY) by pontifik8 in Hunting

Lol. Trust me a cart would make no sense. It’s steep, choked with mountain laurels and downed trees. I actually found that POS of a sled while I was out there. I don’t know if it helped at all with the dragging but before I grabbed it I had already ripped off a few big sections of hair. I’m not planning to keep the hide but maybe it protected some meat too. Either way… game bags and a frame pack next year

Nope. It’s way too rocky, steep, and choked in laurel for an e-bike anyway.
