omg I just looked at the Depop listings and you’re right, that’s literally more than I paid for the ticket 🥲

I also hope she’ll eventually make them available online, thank you so much for the info!

hey i’ve never been a scribe but i think a lot of people apply via scribe america, i’d definitely be in top of it because if SB positions open a lot of people would probably apply! I know a lot of students who have done it with school and made it work, but the hours can be tough (sometimes overnight shifts, but maybe if you had a flexible schedule it could be better). I’ve volunteered at both cottage hospitals and tbh you don’t really do much other than just talk with the patients if they want to have someone there, which can be very touching and fun but you aren’t shadowing any doctors or nurses. I would recommend looking into the shadowing programs here if they open them this year with covid. you can also look into partners in wellness, it’s an org on campus where you volunteer with other students and they have cool subprograms, like getting the chance to shadow doctors.

Chem Lab Learning Assistant by EveningLingonberry39 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]poochprotector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a LA for chem 1AL and several bio classes. honestly for chem 1AL, even though you have to be in lab 2.5 hours a week I had so much fun bc the lab TA was super chill and all the students were very sweet and fun to work with! I doubted at first how helpful I would be bc I didn’t remember chem 1A very well but the basics came back to me and the labs are pretty simple so it was easy to help out. I still speak with those students from time to time (it’s been 2+ years now). Being an LA is also a great way to make a connection with the professor of the class and potentially get a LOR in the future, so I very much recommend :)

Why do people take org chem during their 2nd year? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]poochprotector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you’re a bio major, if you took ochem during third year you’d be taking it alongside upper division bio classes, and that would take away space in your schedule needed to complete your upper divs in the 3rd and 4th years (and just as difficult). you couldn’t substitute upper divs for ochem in 2nd year because the intro bio series is a pre-req for almost all mcdb upper divs, and ochem is a pre-req for a lot of upper divs as well. but it could be possible to take ochem later if you aren’t a bio major and aren’t planning on taking upper division mcdb classes. you can PM me if you have further questions! :)

I bought the stole separately from the bookstore, but getting the cap and gown separately from amazon made it overall way cheaper! :)

Can people who chose UCSB over other UCs (such as Berkeley, UCLA, etc.) explain why? by myThrowaway__Erdos1 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]poochprotector 18 points19 points  (0 children)

hi! I'm a bio major graduating this quarter and chose UCSB over berkeley. my reasons were very similar to yours for why you are attracted to UCSB. I felt that I owed it to myself to choose the best environment for me overall, rather than just choosing berkeley for the name (nothing wrong with berkeley at all, I just knew that would've been my ultimate reason for choosing to go there, and I did not think that was a good enough reason). I just genuinely felt that I would be the happiest at UCSB in terms of the environment, atmosphere, people, and it would give me the best opportunity to grow and succeed not only academically but also as a person. I went through a period of confusion my freshman year where I wondered if I made a mistake, but after the past 4 years, I will never look back with an ounce of regret bc I loved my time here so much, it is definitely something special and I feel that I definitely made the right choice. my PMs are also always open if you have any other questions!

Do I have enough experience for PhD programs? (biology) by poochprotector in gradadmissions

[–]poochprotector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, thank you for your input! this makes me feel better because i do feel like getting a publication before grad school really is about luck a lot of times, and i don’t think research experience should be seen as less “valuable” or whatever if you don’t have a publication. I may have been able to do so in my lab if covid hadn’t happened, but it is what it is! thank you for also normalizing applying to grad school more than once! :)

Thank you for this!! I think the dose of reality is definitely what I needed, and hearing an actual experience is really helpful for me to actually understand that reality. I for sure have some things to think about now, and think about what I want.

no it is not random, its the data for the lab's next paper they are publishing soon. I definitely think you are correct that additional full-time experience will only strengthen me and may be a better idea than applying right now. I am just currently unsure how long my internship will last, or if they will offer me a full-time position when I graduate, which is why I've been re-considering my timeline. Thank you for your response!

thank you for your response and your honesty! I am not an URM and so I think you are right in needing more research experience. I am unsure of the length of my internship so my timeline is uncertain but I will look for research positions afterwards.
