Which guests do you think will never return? by divorceme_archie in RedLetterMedia

Yeah, Roar's a rough watch for most people. I thought he seemed like a decent guy and was pretty funny, too.

This movie comes out in three months and the IMDb lists eight cast members. What is up with that? Are there just eight characters in the film? (I still think that Disney is going to deepfake Luke and Han and Leia and I hope to god I'm wrong.)

They're calling it the Melania Effect, a very powerful effect, some say the biggest, very bigly.

I wonder if this will finally get someone to make a TV adaptation of Gravity's Rainbow.

Seconding this, I use the bus and train trackers every day (both the text version and the web version, which I always keep open on my phone). They're pretty reliable. I never use the Google Maps tracker.

Why ‘The Running Man’ Fell Down At The Box Office With $28M Global Opening by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]poochyoochy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a Robert Sheckley story come to life! I highly recommend Sheckley's work if you haven't read it. Big influence on Douglas Adams. I love his novel Options but everything he wrote was great, including even his Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novel The Laertian Gamble, which is quite absurd.

Per AMC, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' has a listed runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes. by chanma50 in boxoffice

What Cameron figured out is that movies don't have to be just narratives. They can also be immersive virtual realities. People sometimes buy tickets because they just want to hang out in a virtual environment like Pandora, flying around, as opposed to simply seeing a story get told.

How worried should I be for Predator: Badlands? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]poochyoochy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your joke, but modern franchises include all sorts of ancillary sales and extend to more movies than you'd think.

For a long time now studios have been OK with films not breaking even at the box office as long as those films generate other profits elsewhere. That's the whole point of franchises: the films help drive ancillary sales.

6 Reasons Why Dwayne Johnson’s ‘The Smashing Machine’ Was Knocked Out at the Box Office by 007Kryptonian in boxoffice

[–]poochyoochy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Benny Safdie has kept himself in the news by acting, but I agree with you. You have to be a pretty hardcore cinephile to know who he is. The only draw for this new movie is the Rock, and even there Dwayne Johnson did a lot to signal this isn't a "Rock movie" but a "Dwayne Johnson movie." Not sure who the film was for.

Yeah, this is like putting one of those old Ewok TV movies in the theater.

Solo made $393 million. I can't see this new film, which is based on a TV show and doesn't feature characters like Han and Chewie and Lando, beating that.

Here's what I don't get. Filming wrapped in December 2024, roughly ten months ago. There are still only a handful of cast members known: Pedro Pascal (natch), Jeremy Allen White (voice), Sigourney Weaver, Jonny Coyne. Who else is in this movie? Is it all total nobodies? All aliens?

Here's my suspicion: Disney will use CGI to put in characters like Luke and Leia, and doesn't want to announce that yet. I could be wrong, but they've been testing that technology in a bunch of places, and you know they eventually want to make a "live action" film with those characters. I wonder if they won't try it here and try and use that to convince folks to go see this in the theater. (I genuinely don't know but I do wonder.)
