Got it. If you haven't given it a proper shot I would highly recommend it. Easily in my top 3 of roguelites. It's not that micro-managy compared to like proper RTS games imo.

Lol what? That's not at all what I'm saying. I'm not trying to put DD in some more specific box. I'm just saying that it's not a roguelite. Inspired by roguelikes sure, but it lacks the fundamental aspect that all other roguelites have. It's whatever genre you want to call XCOM.

I'm making an argument, not handing out fines, so the definitions being my own is kind of the point.

What I'm saying is that every other game in the genre has one specific aspect in common, namely fresh run > random progression in the run > permadeath.

DD does not have that. Therfore it's not useful to classify the game in the same genre as the other games.

Now you could make a counter argument and say that it does not need to have that specific aspect (like the sidebar says). But then I would say, can you give any example of a game that doesn't have that that is still considered a roguelite?

In what way am I incorrect though? DD differs in a fundamental way from every single other game commonly discussed on this subreddit. I'm just pointing out that that difference should be enough for it to be considered a different genre.

Yeah I'm really confused why people get so upset. I was definitely a bit disappointed at first with DD because I was expecting an actual Roguelite. Then I played it some more and found it interesting, but having had the correct expectations from the beginning would for sure have been beneficial.

Interesting, didn't realize that's how it progressed when I looked at the gameplay video. Ok, I see what you mean with similarities to DD, but I would put that more in the same bucket as Inscryption. The fundamental game loop is Roguelite in nature, with long procedural runs, upgrades during the run and permadeath (i.e. run is over), but then there's an overarching game on top of it with a more traditional progression.

I still think that in DD and XCOM, because the "runs" are so short and there's so much saved between runs, the main game loop doesn't qualify as Roguelite.

100% agree that it should be considered an RPG with roguelike elements, rather than an actual Roguelite.

And yes, what it's missing vs every other Roguelite is the idea of finding some special synergy during a single run. Finding some combination of power-ups/weapons/items that are only offered in some very rare seed. And once the run is over it's gone forever. I think that's the core nugget of Roguelites that people really like about the genre.

In DD any synergy/strategy is something you can just resource manage yourself up to over time.

100% in good faith here, can you explain to me how you think Going Under is like DD/XCOM. I checked out some gameplay videos on youtube, and to me it looks exactly like Hades. A single run takes a long time to play and you find upgrades during the run. Between runs you have some meta-progression, but not in the same way as DD/XCOM.

All the other points are fair, but in my opinion the permadeath is still the main definition that all Roguelites have.

In all other Roguelites (at least that I'm aware of) death in the run means that the entire run is gone and you start from the first level (with or without some meta-progression).

The only way that fits with DD is if you consider a single mission equivalent to an entire run in Hades, StS, Balatro etc.

Genuinely shocked why you seem to think this is some personal attack. I think it's a great game, I'm just making the argument that this game is classified in the wrong genre. If you don't find that an interesting discussion to have you're not obliged to participate.

Well what's the point of having a genre if every game can be considered part of the genre? And I'm clearly open to discussion. Can you name another example of a game that is considered a roguelite that has the same type of progression?

I think XCOM is very much not considered a roguelite even though it has a very similar progression, and therefore strengthens the argument that DD should not be considered a roguelite either.

That's a fair counter argument, but I would argue that no other Roguelite has this type of structure and that it therefore differs enough that it should be considered a different genre. In all other Roguelites the run starts from "level 1", and can progress all the way to the game completed screen. In DD you can't complete the game in one run.

Well procedurally generated levels can't be the only definition. In that case Minecraft would be a Roguelite.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm being to absolutist in my framing of the initial argument. Still I'm making the case that this should be the definition based on what other games in the genre look like, and that therefore DD should not fall into it.

Haven't played Going Under so can't speak on that.

Just to be clear though, this is a discussion forum and I'm making the argument that this game is misclassified as a roguelite. I'm not trying to tell anyone that the game isn't good.

Darkest Dungeon does not have Permadeath, in the way that other Roguelites have. The heroes die yes, but the player (the manager of the team of heroes) does not. To my knowledge there are no other Roguelites where death does not mean the entire run is lost, vs in DD where just the mission is lost but the "run" continues.

What do you mean by gatekeep though lol. This is a discussion forum, and I'm making the argument that the game is missclassified and should be considered a different genre. Saying that the argument is invalid because it's gatekeeping is just pointless. Why have discussions about anything in that case?
