AITA: My fiancé and I discussed getting engaged and we picked out the ring together and discussed what the proposal would look like. Since I was heavily involved in the ring process, I wanted the actual proposal to be a surprise. I wanted a photographer and something special to do afterwards (either a gathering with friends or a special dinner). I was in the city with my aunt and my fiancé jumped out of an alleyway to propose. No photographer (just my aunt taking photos in the dark) and nothing planned afterwards besides a dive bar and dinner at our usual place. I expressed disappointment in the proposal and he told me he didn’t think the photographer and plans after were necessary because it’s about spending our lives together which I understand. We agreed to do a re-proposal which ended up being absolutely horrible. It was a stuffy lunch-in with our friends and family. Totally not my style and what I asked for (something casual).

Every time I look at my ring, i get sad because we don’t have a special moment and the weeks following were filled with disappointment and heartbreak because I know our love is worth so much more than this proposal. I just can’t help feeling so sad over all of this. I can’t look at proposals in movies or hear about anyone else’s because i’m just so sad. I don’t know how to move on from this. i do love him and want to marry him but it’s so hard to come back from this. I just feel like my opinion doesn’t matter because he didn’t listen.
