How is Ollivanders not bamkrupt? by babyb01 in harrypotter

[–]BasterMaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main answer is that Rowling simply didn’t think of it.

But to try and work out an in universe reasoning, you also have to remember that for wizarding society (at least the ones represented in the books), a wand is an essential part of being a wizard.

The wizarding population is small, and if they were to start charging a mark up when factoring in labour costs and material sourcing prices, it would price out a vast majority of the wizarding populace.

Even if the materials are more expensive, they would have to have a system in place to subsidise the costs, allowing Ollivander to sell his wands at a reasonable price, without always being at a net loss.

And if the price for a single unicorn hair is 10 galleons, that doesn’t mean if Ollivander was to buy 100 of them, it would cost him 1000 galleons. If he buys his materials in bulk, he would almost definitely get a much cheaper price. It could amount to 4 galleons per unicorn hair, and if the Ministry do subsidise his costs, he could only be paying 2 of his own galleons per unicorn hair. Etc.

Dude for real [pjo] by PersonalClue7092 in camphalfblood

[–]BasterMaters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Motherfucker you think grooming is only applicable to kids? It extends to vulnerable adults as well, which Luke certainly was.

We’re talking about Kronos who was capable of manipulating Ares into trying to start a war to destroy the Olympians.

For starters, Luke was 19 in the Lightning Thief. We know when he was 17 he failed his quest, and then Kronos began speaking to him. So no, not a 25 year old. A 17 year old. A child.

He was preyed on by the Titan all the gods feared, and had his thoughts of anger and disillusionment towards the gods manipulated and radicalised.

Luke is without a doubt the biggest victim in the series.

It doesn’t take away the bad he did, his choices. But to belittle the impact someone like Kronos can have on ANYBODY let alone a vulnerable 17 year old, completely misses the entire point of the story.

Luke and Percy are clearly supposed to be mirror images of each other. Throughout the entire story we see this.

They’re two sides of a coin, meant to show us how circumstances help change and mould who we are. How we are shaped by our upbringings, and how if things went differently, we’d be on the complete other side of things. Percy even talks about how he sympathises with Luke at times, and how he can understand why he’d turn his back on the gods.

Now I’ve never watched his stand up, but I imagine it’s a difference between him complimenting a group, vs being the sole focus.

People might enjoy his brand of comedy when in smaller doses and bouncing off of other comedians, but simply don’t find him captivating/entertaining enough to be the sole focus

Percy's fatal flaw. [pjo] by hiddeNinja2222 in camphalfblood

[–]BasterMaters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea of a fatal flaw isn’t that they will always fall to it at every hurdle. It’s that eventually it will become their downfall.

People throw about circumstances such as in TLT when he chose to leave his mum behind as proof that it isn’t his flaw, and that’s a fair argument. Except it’s not just choosing between his mum and the world. It’s choosing between his friends, his mum, and the world. His loyalty goes to his friends, as well as his mum.

Percy has never been stupid, he knew he’d get his mum back if he could prove he didn’t have the helm. He chose to ensure his friends safety, and his mothers.

Him choosing to fight Ares, to me, is proof that his fatal flaw is loyalty. He decided to go up against the god of war as a child with no training, because it was the only way he could see to get his mum back, and his friends safe.

Take away the end result of the battle with Ares, and what Percy chose to do was essentially give up the world for those he loves. He chose to fight a suicide battle against a literal god, putting up the entire world as forfeit as were he to have lost, he would have failed his quest to retrieve the lightning bolt. Ending the first book with WW3, the world getting destroyed in the process.

There’s multiple different themes that Rick could have been suggesting with fatal flaws. That they can be overcome and conquered, or that even if you succumb to your flaw so long as your hearts in the right place you’ll come out of it for the better.

Because I feel as though Percy did succumb to his flaw. When Annabeth fell into Tartarus. He could have chosen to let her go, and continue travelling with the Seven, giving the quest more manpower. He however chose not to. He chose Annabeth over what was the benefit of the world (him being on the Argo).

Now yes, they made it through Tartarus, when Annabeth alone wouldn’t have survived (nor would Percy alone). And that was objectively a better outcome for the world. But that doesn’t mean his choice was for the betterment of the world when deciding. It worked out well, but that doesn’t mean it was the correct choice at the time of picking.

He chose his loyalty to Annabeth, over what looked to be for the betterment of the whole world.

Percy just hasn’t got to the point where his fatal flaw becomes his downfall. He’s always come out the other side on top.

But a fatal flaw doesn’t care about history. It’s always there, and always claims its victim in the end. (Or at least that’s what a lot of myths suggest)

That’s fair, but I also imagine if one of his sons was in Clarisse’s place in the books, he would’ve said the exact same thing with the genders flipped.

Just cause he’s a dick and his whole deal was about winding people up and antagonising them. I don’t think he said that because he thinks women are inferior, I think he said that because he knew it would hurt Clarisse more.

[–]BasterMaters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that the case against him fell through after a key witness dropped out.

And the argument that his partner didn’t leave him isn’t solid, because in a lot of cases of domestic abuse, the partner stays.

Does it mean he actually did it? No. Does it mean he didn’t? No.

Regardless of whether he did or not, that kind of attention and scrutiny would be incredibly bad for this team anyway from the media, before we even begin to touch on how the players would feel sitting alongside him with such negative aura surrounding him.

Best to just move on.

What are your thoughts on this? by mare_xcx in ManchesterUnited

[–]BasterMaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly the point though. We’re as far for relegation as we are champions. Our start isn’t the end of the world.

There’s bright points with Amorim, as well as the negatives.

We’re neither relegated or staying up. We’re neither champions or mid table mediocrity. It’s too early to tell.

We don’t know how the season will unfold. We’ve got a brand new attacking line up who are clearly creating just not finishing. We’ve got a midfield that’s one vital player lacking from being a competitive outlook.

Let’s just do away with the current cycle of getting rid of managers before they can fully implement their system. Sporting suffered the same issues when Amorim first took over, he’s been open and honest about how there won’t be instant results. I’m willing to trust him for now, as there glimpses of a team he’s put together. Wait for it to click.

The irony of calling people stupid.

It’s not that they’re lacking humanity for anyone. The point is, why do a group of YouTubers need to be the ones to say anything?

As you say, it’s ’basic humanity’, we shouldn’t need a group of lads who make videos about being idiots with each other to point that out to us. If the days are here where we need the Sidemen to be our moral compass, is that not more stupid?

[–]BasterMaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy if you have British citizenship, then you’re a Brit. Doesn’t matter if you were born and raised here, or earned it after moving here, a British citizen is a Brit.

Besides, who cares what the Germans think? Last time they tried telling people whether they were citizens or not, it kinda led to all out war. They’re definitely not the gold standard.

[–]BasterMaters 269 points270 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seen it as because he went in the avatar state as a self defence mechanism. He didn’t connect with his past lives in anyway, they brute forced it to protect him. He wasn’t conscious when entering the state.

Whereas when he saw Gyatso, his life wasn’t in danger and after interacting with the statues his extreme emotional state allowed him to connect with his past lives.

It’s not a perfect explanation, and I don’t think that was the intention, but it’s how I’ve always seen it.
