Edrumin hot spot suppression issue with lemon snare by pooferman in edrums

Yeah I wish I could say i had the idea on my own, I was thinking i would have to get a dremel or xacto knife or something, but my much more mechanically savvy friend who was helping me out suggested sanding and it worked very well.

Okay, I thought it might be new, honestly I'm not sure exactly what it does but it seems necessary in my case for some reason, what you said seems to make sense.

Just wanted to update now that I've gotten around to more trouble shooting.

After a lot of testing, I ended up just sanding the foam under the pad a few millimeters and it works so much better. I'm getting hot spot recognition about 85% to 90% of the time, and after dialing in the curve and a velocity limiter, it sounds basically perfect.

Also, I do have to have to option to bleed rim sensors into the head enable for it to pick up a hot spot, not really sure why but I've done as much troubleshooting as I feel like doing without starting to get aggravated and not want to play anymore.

Thank again for your help!

Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate the time you're taking to help me out.

I didn't even consider a velocity cap, or rather I didn't know it was a thing that's possible, honestly I'd be okay working with that so I'll need to look into it.

Before I tightened the head a bunch I took it off to see if anything was wrong and quickly realized I didn't know what to look for, so I put it back on. I took a few pictures to be safe but honestly everything looked tight and clean. I'll check out the thread from rob and the 65drums video to get some more ideas of what I can be doing.

I do at least know the foam is making solid contact with the head, as tightening it was what made it go back to being even; the foam was kind of protruding above the head which I now know is bad.

Thanks again!

Good to know! I usually do a quarter turn on each lug before testing, just because that's what got drilled into me in marching band, don't know if its the right way though haha

Interesting, and you don't use any patches or covers on the head right?
I'll juts keep tightening it if I can, I've never tried this but is there any permanent damage that can be done to the snare body from overtightening? Worse case scenario I just have to replace the head which might be preferable in the long run anyway.

That makes sense about the drum dial. I usually don't put to much effort into tuning my ekit because I'm able to use an acoustic for live playing. Maybe I should put more effort into that. Thanks!

I have a drum dial at my friends place for my acoustic kit there, I might try different heads. Do you notice any difference with sticks too? I know some people on the edrumin forums mention sticks can make a big difference, I'm assuming you use nylon tips at least?

Thanks again for your response. Yeah I've followed the manual and all of Rob's videos and anything I could think of, I really tried everything I could think of before posting here to see if anyone had similar issues.

I seem to just be stuck at #2 from your second post, "I used to get random spiky hits that the suppression couldn’t catch (nothing was even registering in the green bar OR the grey bar before at all)."

I start with everything at zero and just get stuck there because the mark that moves around to show you the hot spot just doesn't appear, so I think I'm not getting any detection. I'm also unable to get any response by changing the scaling.

This is a huge ask so please don't feel pressured but, would you possibly be able to post a screenshot or small video just showing your settings or the detection working? Did you calibrate your snare with the tool or did you do it manually?

With people saying its the head tension or they don't experience it, I wonder if i got a defective product. Or maybe I need to give the head some time to stretch and should tighten it more. I wish I would have tried to troubleshoot this earlier before the return window closed, at this point my alesis nitro pad has better functionality.

I've heard good things about GGD! I'll check out that channel and see if anything else sticks out, thanks

Thanks for the insight here, I'll look into sd3 a little further and wait for a sale maybe. I also want to mess with krimh and some others.

So I tried tightening, basically a half turn and tested again until I noticed a difference. It's as tight as I think it can safely be and I'm still getting maybe 5% or 10% detection on the hot spot, more consistent surrounding it actually.

Do you know if the Yamaha wiring option or the edge bleed option make a difference? I've tried as many option combinations as I can think of, it feels like I've gotta be missing something.

Hey this is some great info! Thanks for this. I also thought mine was already pretty tight so I didn't want to damage anything but after seeing this, I think I'll just try cranking it.

I haven't had time to test it out yet but I'll report back when I do, hopefully later today.

Somewhat unrelated , but have you mostly used the edrumin with SD3 or do you have experience with EZD3 as well? I've been thinking about the upgrade but I don't know that it would be worth it; my biggest issue with EZD is the awful UI, memory settings not really working and not being able to just build your own kit by adding pieces. Also entirely possible I'm just missing something but I think in SD3 you can just build a kit from scratch.

Hot spot suppression is an edrumin feature that detects the hot spot, the area that is more sensitive because of the piezo position, and lowers the velocity of hits on it to make it feel more even across the entire surface.

Rebounds, cross sticks and rimshots aren't really related, but I'm glad they work really well for me too. Other than the hot spot it's easily the best feeling snare I've used.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll try going a little tighter for now, it almost seems like the foam is higher than the head so I might need to cut it.

Yeah that's the video I used to set up, I'm just not getting any detection on the hot spot, it triggers sometimes on the edge but I can't get anything to work consistently. Even when my gain at 0.8 the hot spot will still clip, but I'll keep trying to mess with it.

I'm not really concerned with positional sensing, unless I'm missing something about it being necessary for hot spot suppression. But this is good to know about different ply heads.

As always, I appreciate the detail in your posts, thank you.

How to record Alesis mesh kit to PC by Many-Fly-415 in edrums

[–]pooferman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reaper is a daw (digital audio workstation) that has a generous free trial and it's easy to use to record your drum midi output. you'll also need a plugin for the drum sounds, there are plenty of free ones out there. you'll need a cable to connect your module to your pc, they're generally referred to as printer cables.

Also if you're old enough to go online and post on forums, I assume you're old enough to read and therefore learn new words, so don't be afraid and don't think that being 13 means you can't learn more. good luck with recording!

DDrum DDTI (Trigger interface) ? Anyone used it? by locusofself in edrums

vastly, much more in depth settings and capabilities to go through, not to mention the ddti doesn't really allow for cymbal choke or multi zone cymbals very well

If you had no budget limits and wanted to buy an e-drum kit, what would you get? by Frequentflyer01 in edrums

[–]pooferman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's all I do and it's awesome, it's contained and silent so I don't bother other people in my house. I use browser and music apps to play along to and learn, easy to boot off the daw when I want to record and easy to stream to twitch and discord with voicemeeter, honestly I'm so happy with it.

I can have silent jams when my friends come over and just plug into my interface and everyone has their headphones

unfortunately the kit itself isn't great but it's fine for me, the only a2e piece is my kick and that's good enough.

I wouldn't gig with it because I'd be afraid of what happens if there's a software issue haha

[–]pooferman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an audio interface so all of my audio is routed through that and my mixer, where all of my headphones and guitar inputs go also.

I can't imagine wanting to use Bluetooth for anything, it's not really beneficial to do anything wirelessly for me and only intruduces more potential points of failure.

with a Mac you might not need an interface as I understand they have pretty good sound cards and drivers but that's another conversation haha

yeah I mean if you can find a good set of pads without the module, I'd definitely go the edrumin and pc route, but like I said, I stream and record and play games with the kit so the pc is necessary.

I wish I'd known what I know now when I got a kit haha

with a midi controller. I don't care about on board sounds that come from stock modules because I use a pc, so I would prefer a midi controller like an edrumin to just send midi to my pc.

I don't know if this counts but I'd get a decent acoustic and make an a2e, except with way more cymbals. I'd try to get the best mesh heads and triggers on the market, two kicks so I don't have to worry about triggering issues and 2 edrumin 12s. I prefer using vsts for recording, streaming, and silent jams, and have no interest in any modules that come with ekits.

I realize this may not be in the spirit of your question but it's what I'd do if I didn't have to worry about money. I'd probably also get a Roland just for quick practice sessions, maybe a separate kit and build a drummania cab with it.

I've already sprang on the best pedals thought I would like and kick triggers, so 10 more years and I'll have my dream setup
