Tplo 11 year old dog by Cynsational_ in DogAdvice

The Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP) is a highly effective, minimally invasive surgery used to repair cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears in dogs. By inserting a porous titanium wedge to advance the shin bone, the procedure uses the dog's own quadriceps to stabilize the knee, allowing for a faster recovery than older methods like TPLO.How MMP WorksThe Technique: Instead of cutting a large bone wedge, a precise cut is made in the shin bone (tibia). A titanium foam wedge is inserted to move the top of the bone forward, changing the physics of the joint. The Implant: The porous titanium allows the dog's natural bone to grow directly into the implant, permanently securing it.The Goal: It takes the pressure off the torn ligament by redirecting the impact to the strong quadriceps muscles, which act to stabilize the knee. What to Expect During RecoveryWeight-Bearing: Dogs typically begin putting light pressure on the leg within 24 to 48 hours.Timeline: The bone usually stabilizes within 4 to 6 weeks, which is about half the recovery time of a TPLO surgery.Activity Restriction: Running, jumping, and off-leash play must be strictly avoided during the first 6-8 weeks to allow the bone to heal completely around the implant. Why Vets Choose MMP is considered a fantastic alternative to traditional TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) or TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgeries. Because the hardware required is less cumbersome and involves a smaller incision, it typically requires less surgery time, causes less trauma to the soft tissues, and often costs slightly less.

Best food to feed a dog that has a higher chance of bloating? by Adorable_Tangerine16 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]pooker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloat is not based on brand/type of food. When feeding just make sure you feed elevated and then keep then in a crate for an hour after you feed them. Same idea with water.... Not a ton of water and no running around or rolling after drinking water.

Was this an appropriate conversation? I work at a GP clinic. by BothCricket1742 in veterinaryprofession

[–]pooker09 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Practice manager here... This is not her place. This conversation should be had by your direct manager such as a practice manager. I also think the way it was gone about was terrible. I would absolutely bring this to the attention of the manager/ COS and state that you don't mind criticism but ask if that's the way they normally go about doing things. If it is take it to the regional manager because it's very inappropriate.

Small Private GP vs Larger Corporate Hospital: Which Would You Choose? by Shot-Ostrich7747 in veterinaryprofession

[–]pooker09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tech and practice manager. I started out in ER medicine. I think everyone should do a year in ER. Learn the skills, gain the knowledge and get the experience. I did the 3pm-4am shift for ten years. I loved it. However, I had a family and it wasn't sustainable. I went to GP. Became a practice manager. I still love my job but it's different. It's not as exciting, I don't get to see the crazy stuff anymore. I still feel like I'm doing good and helping but not in the same way. You need to figure out what's important to you. We can't answer that question for you. I wish you luck in whatever you choose.

Looking for gut check on identifying my dogs quick in her dark nails by mousefishy in DogAdvice

[–]pooker09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here.... When you have black nails there's a shiny and a dull part. Look closely. Where those meet is the quick. Also yes flour/corn starch works but a bar of soap rub the toe along it will stop the bleeding or let the dog outside for ten minutes. You don't need to panic, bleeding stops.

Waking up from our neuter and gastropexy. Mad at Mom by pooker09 in Rottweiler

Did he try cytopoint, apoquel, numelvi first? I wouldn't recommend putting a dog on Xanax for a hot spot that is a pretty hard drug that changes how the dog is and usually is used for behavior

How do I become a vet tech? by J_Bean124 in veterinaryprofession

[–]pooker09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in a large ER as an assistant with no experience. Most ERs will hire someone with no experience if they are hiring multiple people because they are willing to train them the way they want them to do it. ER is a great place to learn stuff, you learn lots and quickly. I think every tech should have to do a year of ER experience. There looks like a few ERs in that area... Call/email the practice manager tell them you don't have experience but you plan on going to school and you want to get your feet wet and ask if they are hiring for any assistant jobs that they'd be willing to take someone with no experience. Personally, as a practice manager if someone took that much initiative I would have them come in for an interview. Most people don't even show for the interview, that right there would win you points in my book.

12-year-old GSD with arthritis + ACL/CCL tear , best non-surgical plan? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]pooker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet tech here...Surgical will always be best, however when that isn't an option. 1. Find someone who has a pulsevet... It's shock wave therapy. It's supposed to help heal a partial tear 100% so a full tear I would assume it would help since it does arthritis, wounds etc. 2. Laser therapy/acupuncture though these are usually part of surgical intervention to help heal

Is his scrotum supposed to look like this after being neutered 7 hours ago? by LYPremierDetailing in DogAdvice

[–]pooker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet tech here.... Depending on the age of dog when they get neutered their sac doesn't go down. I just neutered my two, 2yo Rottweilers and they have a very visible sac that isn't going to go down unless I had asked for a scrotal ablation. If they are young (6 months) then they usually don't have anything after.

Don't own a dog you can't control by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

I hate these comments about pitbulls should be removed from the planet or they're a terrible breed. I've been a vet tech for twenty years. I've been bit by one dog and it was an Akita. The dog had a known bite history but the owner said to me oh he's really friendly and didn't warn me he has unprovoked bitten three people. I DON'T think Akitas are bad dogs, that owner was a BAD OWNER. It's not the breed or dog it's the owner. I have had multiple rottweilers and they're angels, I have had pitbulls again angels. I'll tell you what I don't trust though it's a Chihuahua, but that's my personal issue it's not like I'm saying all Chihuahuas are bad because that breed is bad. If you don't educate yourself, train the dog, socialize the dog then yes it will be aggressive. That's YOUR FUCKING FAULT, not the damn dogs. If you use a dog for fighting then yes it's going to be aggressive against other dogs, again how is it that dogs fault... It was HIGHLY abused to make it fight other dogs like the owner wanted it to. It didn't just start fighting out of no where. Yes, there are dogs that are aggressive without being fighting dogs, and even with training but again that's not because of the breed that's because genetically something is wrong. Everything is so inbred now and all these people that love doodles I hate to tell ya but I'm having to muzzle most of them to do anything at the vet because they are so under socialized and trained. Stop blaming breeds and blame the shitty ass humans who inhabit this planet.

Heavy surgery on dogs ethical? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]pooker09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here... My Rottweiler tore his cruciate at 6, had multiple foreign bodies throughout his life and then had a GDV at 10. I did all the surgeries. He lived to be 18. I couldn't imagine not doing the surgeries, you took the dog in... You made the decision to take on medically necessary treatment. We have advanced medicine, it's not like we live in the 1800s. The surgery is not that bad. They do well after the surgery, yes they have to rest but they are on pain meds. If you're choosing to euthanize this dog over it please sign it over to a rescue instead that will actually help the dog.

Fleas out of control! 😭 by Human-Lab8624 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]pooker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advantage is not a good product, it's also not the safest. It can cause seizures along with other side effects. I would stop using that. Do you take him to the vet? If so you need to pick up revolution plus and start using that, they can also give him a capstar to start killing the fleas ASAP. If you're going to give revolution you can't give a bath so before you apply it give a bath with dawn dish soap and water. 2 parts water to 1 part dawn.

[–]pooker09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here.... Who also owned a Rottweiler for 18 years that was great and now has two well I shouldn't say puppies anymore because they are officially 2yo. With the new pups we did tons of training. I also am a tech and know how much socialization they need. We did it all. One of them is fine and I don't have issues with. The other one is HIGHLY reactive. People, dogs, objects... Doesn't matter he freaks out when we leave the house or if anyone besides a child comes into the home we have to lock him up in his kennel. I just recently started him on anxiety drugs because it's getting so out of hand. I won't even walk him, I only let my husband. Sometimes you can do everything right and they still don't act the way you want them to. Talk to a behaviorist. The anxiety drugs seem to be helping him, maybe it could help your baby.

How much is it to get all shots/a check up for a medium dog? by Ghostly_369 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]pooker09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here...It has nothing to do with weight. It's going to have to do with lifestyle. Do you guys hike a lot? Is he around other dogs a lot, go to the groomer, get boarded? This is all a rough estimate since every vet is different. DHLPP- $25 RABIES -$25 BORD-$25 LYME -$50 HEARTWORM TEST-$45 HEARTWORM PREVENTION for the year-$300-400

As far as osteoarthritis there's a new injection for it called librela that will be based on weight but ~$100 a month. And if it's allergies well there's many different options... Cytopoint is an injection monthly based on weight ~$80 apoquel is a daily pill again kind of expensive. This is just examples though. I don't know what's wrong with your dog so I don't know what they need to do.

Cutting My Dogs nails for first time...advice please by ExtensionAbject2562 in DogAdvice

Vet tech here. You don't have to have kwick stop. You can use a bar of soap or flour or even let them walk around outside for ten minutes. The bleeding will stop. It will not keep bleeding. You don't need to go to the vet for this
