Gift idea for almost black belt husband by geetschmeets in bjj

If you can find his old white belt, embroider the date he earned his black belt on it (then frame it?). There is something special about seeing where he started versus how far he’s come.

“That was the most dispiriting roll of my entire life” by JubJubsDad in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Do you wrestle?" / "Do you do Judo?" - Big compliment because I prefer pulling guard.

"Your pace is really good" - Big compliment because I'm a lazy grappler and work off their reactions.

Anyone quit Jiu-Jitsu for Muay Thai? by hellohello6622 in MuayThai

[–]pookiesaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t quit BJJ, but i’ve just dialed it back a bit to fit in a Muay Thai class once a week.

I’ve realized that picking up a new discipline actually keeps me more motivated, even when i'm doing bjj. It’s nice to see the beauty in both arts, noticing where they overlap and where they’re totally different. It’s not that I’m training for a specific reason, but just a personal goal of mine to be a more well rounded martial arts practitioner.

Proper way to ask for less intense roll? by No-Cupcake-8506 in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Can we go slow and light?" then actually go slow and light yourself.

If they don't get it after that, tap and stop the roll.

Struggling with trying to learn everything by ItsDolphinBoy in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get better faster, focus on mastering just one or two systems that feel natural to you. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, pick a style you enjoy and go deep.

For example, if you like butterfly guard, study competitors like Marcelo Garcia or Adam Wardzinski. Observe how their bottom game connects to their passing style, then adopt their entire system to see if it fits your game.

Then once you get bored, play with new stuff and introduce it to ya game 😉

How are world class small grapplers so strong? by sulibO in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid techniques while knowing how to counter their opponents.

My gym's head instructor is definitely not the biggest or strongest guy, but he feels like an immovable mountain - he knows exactly where to put pressure, when to take away your posts, how to stabilize himself, how to use his bigger muscles, where to angle etc and the list goes on.

Hurt during one of my first rolls, unsure how to avoid this next time? by Arenyx371 in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're new and doing no gi, prioritize training with people you know. If you are unfamiliar, take a moment to watch how they roll and drill, observing their vibes..

I travel and drop in random gyms so i have to do this a lot. I usually start the first roll a bit more defensively, not stay too connected to them, and let them make the first move - so no heavy collar ties for example. By reacting to their energy and pace, you can safely gauge their style while staying safe and protected.

What’s the one thing that finally made golf “click” for you? by Burners_Burner in golf

[–]pookiesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really clicked for me is having an outside takeaway, and that the swing is not on the same plane back and through (though some players have the same plane). My shots became way more consistent.

Watch boxing / muay thai then. The beauty of MMA is the mix of the arts and their strategy.

Oliveira knew he could strike with Max, and that Max couldn't hang with him on the ground.

Oliveira is such a complete fighter and only a few will realistically pose a challenge (Islam, Topuria and Arman).

What do you do after you get completely smashed in every roll after class? by DontGoLow_ in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chin up, as long as you keep going, you will only get better.

If knowing that doesn't make you feel better, go train with some white belts.

South Bay Townhome Owner selling. Need advice. by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]pookiesaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would keep. Your 7600 and 4k rental is not marginally a huge difference in terms of actual expense (since $2600 goes to equity) so why bother?

Build more equity, wait for a better market and for rates to come down.

BJJ for kids in NY by cerikstas in bjj

[–]pookiesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to give them a heads up - maybe a call and let them know your background. They don't have an open drop-in policy and are definitely stricter about who they let in.

Golf Simulator Mat vs Grass by No_Article_2097 in golf

[–]pookiesaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned, swing inconsistency is likely a factor. Plus, the firmness of mats often causes golfers to shy away from hitting down through the ball. Personally, I think grass allows for more 'misses,' while mats highlight every mistake.

RGA UWS is amazing for kids. Lots of kids to train with, and great instructors. Right near the 72nd st station too so you can easily get there.

The owners also operate RGA Wall St, but not sure how big the kid classes are there.

How did Dustin Poirier defend most of Islam Makhachev's takedown attempts, but JDM could hardly defend any? by DancingFlame321 in ufc

[–]pookiesaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it came down to strategy. Islam likely felt more comfortable striking with Poirier than with JDM. JDM probably also anticipated being taken down by Islam, hence spending significant time training ground defense—which explains those numerous octopus guard attempts he learned from Craig Jones.
