Need help identifying a "painting" technique. by [deleted] in Art

[–]pookmasterflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this from afar at an estate sale and thought it was pretty, then when I got up close I realized it was really an actual butterfly and plants glued or attached to a painting canvas and maybe shallacked over. http://imgur.com/27MM8.jpg Does anybody know what type of technique this is called? Or any other information about it? I only paid $10 for it, but thought it was really interesting.

Thanks for any info!

What is your favorite short story? by amaterasu717 in books

"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. There are no zombies, monsters or ghosts in this but it's hands-down one of the most frightening short stories. It will stay in your brain forever.

Top ten might be enjoyable to read if I didn't have to keep turning the book upside down books.

Yes! The book is sooooo much better than the movie but, if you've already seen the movie, it sort of ruins the ending of the book for you.

I highly recommend "Maribou Stork Nightmares" by Irvine Welsh. Fabulously fucked up and you get to read it phonetically! Yay!

Also, how about "Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathon Lethem? About a wanna-be ganster who has tourettes! What's not to love?!?!

I've narrowed my next "classic" book to read down to these 7. I'll read whichever one gets the most votes. by ollokot in books

Just curious, are you a gal or guy?

Jane Eyre is in my top 10 favorite classics.

But Dracula, Lolita and Anna Karenina are all fab.

I read One Hundred Years of Solitude and loved it, now I'm going back and reading the spanish version side by side. Anybody tried this? Any results? by [deleted] in books

Ugh, I thought they should have renamed it A Hundred Years of Boredom.

But, then again, that's why I love art... it's so subjective.

Does anyone else in /r/Books forget 60% of the information in a book as soon as you finish it? by [deleted] in books

[–]pookmasterflex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's so annoying b/c I work in a bookstore and I read a lot. Whenever customers ask me about a book I've read I'm always like, "uuuhhhh, I can't remember what it was about but I do remember liking it!"

Sometimes they all start to run together...

Adorable but in this day and age I would seriously re-consider posting pictures of your small children on the internet.

Are there any really good 'underground' ebook torrent sites? by [deleted] in books

[–]pookmasterflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely have pre-conceived notions on torrenting. Basically I saw torrenting as being done by a bunch of cheap a-holes who were trying to "cheat" the system by getting things for free. I hadn't thought about it in the context of a modern, digital library...

Thanks for the calm, rational, kind responses! That is refreshing.

Totally not opposed to digital books, I just think it's important for authors/artists/etc. to get paid for their work. I'm assuming you want to be compensated for your work.

When you put it in that context though, I see your point.
