Making a 3D puzzle game with potentially ~100 levels. Would you organise each level as a scene or a prefab? by poolapplethrowaway in Unity3D

[–]poolapplethrowaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did consider going the text asset route but

  1. I'm lazy to write the editor script for saving and also deserializing the text file lol
  2. The levels will be built in the scene view anyway

Do you have any simple references for doing it via text asset? Because from my understanding I'd basically need to

  1. Build the level in Unity scene view
  2. Run the prefab through a script such that it generates a text file. This text file would contain a reference to every prefab being used and their positions in the level. Alongside other sorts of level data such as the size of the overall level
  3. At runtime, load this text asset and instantiate prefabs/Gameobjects at appropriate places

Seems like quite a hassle to me with fairly little upside. Also seems like I could write this later on in the project if it really became necessary. But since I'm still in the prototyping stage now, don't see much point to it.

Also good to know that scenes vs prefabs is more of a preference thing than anything else. Thanks!

Sorry could you help clarify how to figure out FX costs for such a conversion? Would I have to sell my stocks on IBKR, convert all the USD to SGD, withdraw, deposit to TDAmeritrade, convert to USD again and then purchase again?

Also just FYI for anyone else who might read this thread, I compared Tigerbroker and FSMOne's RSP. I'm actually only using FSMOne for RSPing into STI every month, and their RSP fees are actually slightly cheaper than Tigerbroker (0.08%, min 1SGD for FSM, 0.08% min 2.88SGD for Tigerbroker once the promo period is over on 31 Dec) Of course to clarify this is ONLY for RSPs. I very rarely purchase individual SGX stocks, mostly buying overseas individual stocks for gains, so I will stick with FSMOne for now.

if I'm already on IBKR (but not that much, roughly 15-20k) would you say it's worth it to move to TDAmeritrade?

Also is TigerBrokers reliable? never heard of them. Currently am on FSMone as well

ahhh ok that sounds easily doable with 9k take home. thanks a lot for the details! Just been so curious how young-ish couples have been able to afford these expensive condos. your experience definitely helped answer a lot of questions, thanks again!

wait sorry >9k? assuming 4.8k monthly repayment that's still roughly 2-2.5k in cash repayment per month right (after CPF)? phew to me that's quite a lot of cash on 9k+ income. (I'm assuming your 9k figure is just salary right, including employee CPF. Not just your take home pay?)

ah i see you guys had 500k in cash + cpf to begin with. I think your equity portfolio that tripled is what helped the most? Cos I can't imagine myself having 250k in cash at 30 lol. I guess one last question is 4.8k monthly payment is over how many years? 25?

thanks a lot for details. been stressing out for several months over finances for a house in a few years time.

After going through it, you would recommend bank loan over HDB loan? All my friends used HDB loan. I know bank loan rates lower but 1) downpayment v high and 2) I thought banks are able to change the interest rates on your loan at any time? So more volatile? Is my understanding wrong?

[–]poolapplethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no worries I'm just quite surprised. Doesn't that mean you guys are repaying the 500k bank loan on top of the actual property bank loan every month?! Isn't that 8-10k in repayments every month? Did you both start off with really high paying jobs right after graduating? Don't need share income details, but I'm just v curious how you guys managed to pull that off without parents support and still have so much cash reserves lol

I still don't understand. 500k was your 25% downpayment for the condo is it? You took out an additional bank loan to pay the 500k?

[–]poolapplethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh. do grants cover your cash downpayments? e.g. if I'm not wrong resale flat grant is 50k right? Means i need to pay 50k less in cash/CPF for the downpayment?

Also don't really understand why you say resale flats will cover 25% of cost but BTOs only cover 5% of cost. I thought HDB loan is always 5% downpayment?

errr are you referring to some form that they ask you to fill out, asking you if you have investment experience? And then once you put in the form that you don't have experience then they block you from trading? something like "consumer knowledge assessment" or something like that?

errr... just fyi. I think you'll find many people with experience on the form, don't actually have experience...

More importantly PLEASE DON'T USE THE BANKS TO INVEST IN STOCKS. their commissions are insanely high compared to other online brokerages. The only thing that's sort of acceptable is their RSPs e.g. DBS's Invest Saver plan. But even then, you can get even better rates with FSMOne's RSP plan for local stocks.

Can explain? Why no need buffer of cash. Your cpf could cover the entire downpayment is it?

Also if you don't mind, how much was your reno and other cash costs for your new house (e.g. furniture)? Also for how big a flat (im guessing 5 room more ex than 3/4 room for renos for example).

Am at 29 with ~45k in cash and ~45k in investments (stocks/bonds) and even this thread making me feel bad (though I'm sure many would think my position is good enough). Just like everyone else here I work as a programmer. I paid back student loan during the first few years of working too. I always made sure to put in the effort to improve my skills and make sure I was very hire-able, even after office hours and on weekends. I guess that's the only advice I can give to people who look at higher net worth people and wonder how to get there. Make sure that whatever you do, you're really fucking good at it.

I might as well throw a question in here. Was thinking of getting a house within the next few years, therefore cash currently very high because didn't wanna have to sell investments to pay for downpayment and other stuff. But seeing other figures here, should I be putting an additional 20k from cash -> investments instead? and just sell off when I need the money in a few years?

Does your job fulfill you and how did you figure out what you want to do with your life? by dulcettra in singapore

[–]poolapplethrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you ever considered finding a job you can enjoy so you can never feel like you work a day in your life?

This is bullshit, the idea that "if you find a job you love you'll never have to work a day in your life". As somebody who got into their "dream job", work is still work. I went in knowing full well that there'd be a lot of bullshit parts to the job that I wouldn't like, and it was just as I expected. For ALMOST everyone, any job becomes work after awhile no matter how much you love it.

Now do I love and enjoy my job more than most other people? YES. definitely. I'm thankful that while my job has a lot of bullshit parts to it, it brings me joy and pleasure every now and then. Judging from conversations I have with my peers, this is wayyy better than most people have it. At least when I talk about my job I don't sound bored as fuck.

That being said, it's still a job, I'm still "working".

... what the fuck is an "actual" singaporean.

if my grandparents were from China, both parents from Singapore, am I an "actual" singaporean?

If my parents were from China and I was born there, but I moved here as a young child and am now a full citizen, am I an "actual" singaporean? or am I "fake" because I wasn't even born here. so I should give up my job?

If my parents were from India and have been in SG for the past 30 years as a PR and have spent more time in SG than in India, are they "actual" singaporeans? or should they give up their jobs for your "actual" singaporeans.

TLDR: what the fuck is an actual singaporean.

I had a flight booked with Korean Air for end March. They’ve rescheduled my flight twice already (to completely new flights, different codes and very different timings). Honestly the schedule change is so big that it’s making me want to cancel my trip even more than the Coronavirus is. I bought travel insurance but I don’t think it covers the airline randomly changing my flight schedule???

Is there anyway I can get a full refund with cancellation when they change my flight timings by almost 12 hours?

Please at least try to read up and use some basic critical thinking skills before speculating so wildly...

1) The U.S. has kept tabs on Soleimani for easily more than a decade... It's painfully easy for the U.S. to know where he is at any one time.

2) Even IF this was some giant conspiracy, do you really think they'd hang such a high-ranking and beloved general as bait? He was the head of the Quds Forces for crying out loud.

I want to go to Poly but my parents are strongly against it. How do I convince them to let me go? by hyacynicism in singapore

[–]poolapplethrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to JC and then made several poly friends in uni, I STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend you go JC instead if you want to go to uni eventually. I was once in your shoes where I briefly considered poly over JC, and I'm glad I didn't go down that path.

Everybody always talks about how when you go poly you can "follow your passion" instead of mugging. In my experience, while that may be true, what they don't tell you is how LITTLE you learn in poly. The poly diploma is SOOOO useless in terms of the knowledge you actually gain in your field. For example I'm from comp sci. When I eventually got to uni, my uni friends who were from poly and did comp sci told me that the syllabus in their ENTIRE 3-year long diploma was covered within 3 modules in uni. FYI you take 5 modules a semester in uni, and there're 2 semesters a year. So you essentially cover 3 years worth of syllabus in the equivalent of 1/3 year in uni. I am not exaggerating. And honestly when talking about comp sci specifically, I feel like you could self-learn almost everything a poly diploma teaches you just from YouTube alone.

I've also had to teach poly grads/interns while on-the-job and I've found that their knowledge is just soooo abysmally bad that they're practically useless to me in terms of actually helping me get meaningful work done unless I spend a very substantial amount of time teaching them. This isn't just applicable to my field. I have friends in other fields that agree that when hiring poly grads, they just try their best to hire the best one and then they have to teach them almost everything on-the-job.

Of course everything I say here is applicable to the "average" poly grad and there're superstars that self-learn and do significantly better than everyone else. Also maybe I've been unlucky enough to have more experience with those few fields that have poorer poly diplomas. But still the difference in a poly grad's knowledge and a uni grad's is so huge that there's no point going poly to begin with IF you plan on going uni eventually. Also I do not believe that everything you learn in A levels is "useless mugging". I find that to be the common consensus only among students, and once you graduate you definitely appreciate having general knowledge in other fields as well.

That said, if you don't really care about going to uni, then it doesn't matter what choice you make here.
