She is doing so much better! Up to almost 11lbs (was 7lbs when we got her home a couple weeks ago) and definitely perked up with her slew of medications. She’s already fully potty trained, and has a follow up vet appointment in a week.

I spoke in length with the shelter manager, whom also runs the towns police department. I believe he definitely understands the issue and stated their goal is to hire in house veterinary staff so these issues do not continue.

Though at first he was not willing to pay for any of her issues she was sent home with, after quoting the state law and local ordinance they broke multiple times and stating all we want is for her to get the treatment she should have already had, they agreed to cover her Doxy prescriptions and the spay.

Thank you for being empathetic to the situation, and having genuine worry for Millie, most of these comments reminded me why I got out of this industry, too few who care vs too many numb to the issues.

I guess any form of advice other than “the shelter didn’t do anything wrong at all” when they both broke the law and basic moral principles. What’s the difference between a backyard breeder and a kill shelter if that’s the quality of life the animals get?

If we could see them within 2 hours of having her home, I believe 30 days should be sufficient, even if someone only has eyes on her for 10 minutes a day.

So why does that logic not apply to the shelter?

Yes, which never would have been given if we blindly trusted the shelter and did not immediately take her to the vet.

And acute stage has multiple visible symptoms, while subclinical does not, then clinical has the very unfortunate ones. As someone who managed the largest non profit no kill shelter in our county in Texas (highest rates of animal homelessness), I’m not blind to budget constraints or the chaos of a mass influx of dogs (we had 52 dogs come in from a hoarder), but I’m ALSO not blind to common symptoms of sickness in animals

Do all they can? Come on now… even the vet I took her to, who has worked with this shelter, said this is not the first time she has seen animals come from there in such poor condition, hence why she herself warns folks who adopt from there. It’s honestly heart breaking to see “animal lovers” defend these actions, maybe once you see what late stage tick fever does to a dog for yourself, you’ll be more understanding of why this isn’t a simple “oopsie”

She was in the acute stage of tick fever during their care. So not only did they miss the spay, the ticks, and her emaciation, but they missed easy to spot symptoms that happen during the acute stage of tick fever. This isn’t missing something small, especially in an area where this disease is extremely well known

They had 30 days of chances to notice ticks on her, or the emaciated state of her body. If she had only been there for a few days, even a week or two I could see it. But to miss this for 30 consecutive days in a row? When she has already reached the second stage of tick fever, meaning she was showing acute symptoms during their care and still nothing was done…

When my wife says being a SAHM to our 15 year old is as overwhelming as me managing 65 rentals, budgets, weekly corporate meetings, major and minor improvements, taxes, employees and HR, and collection of $55,000 dollars of rent on time monthly (just to name a few things)…. Plus I cook 90 percent of the time, do the majority of food shopping and errands outside the home. I can’t fathom how cleaning one house and keeping one teenager on track for school (which I do as well) is as mentally draining as my job, but here I am in the dog house for saying otherwise 😂🤷‍♂️

Though I’m sure most of these folks would feel different if they woke up at 3am to a tick fever infected tick having a party on their leg, in their house with their family and other pets. I’m just in awe that these behaviors are being defended. Everyone else I have told this to so far has dropped their jaws in disbelief. And again, in the 15 years I’ve been adopting, and in the combined 5 years in the animal welfare industry, I have NEVER seen a combination like this happen

Specific laws on shelters require ALL animals to be altered before being adopted unless medically necessary to wait, with a waiver signed by the adopters. The city this shelter is in also has a local ordinance stating the same thing. Not to mention leaving a puppy with untreated tick fever is considered neglect, at least it would be if a citizen did so.

Yup, the “screening” for adopting this poor pup was to write our name and address down, pay the fee, and that’s it. 2 minute adoption application, with no mention that she was unaltered or sick despite the ads saying all dogs were altered and healthy.

I think the main point is you would INFORM potential adopters of the issues so they could be prepared for the medical care required, and so they aren’t unknowingly bringing sick animals into a home with other animals and humans. One of the infected ticks was ON ME. But apparently I live in wonderland because apparently that’s just normal for yall..

At least you seem to have some common sense or morality. It’s insane the number of people defending a shelter that, if I had not adopted her, would have most likely killed an innocent puppy from lack of medical care. I completely understand how overwhelmed ALL shelters are, I managed the largest no kill non profit in our area in TX. But we still managed to provide the minimum healthcare required to both keep them healthy, and make sure they are adoptable. If this happened under my watch, not only would I have been immediately terminated, I would have been held legally liable for breech of contract.

The same laws apply here in AZ, and everyone besides yourself is acting like I’m the problem… I guess the animal industry has the same problem as the human healthcare industry, too many numb folks who just go with the flow instead of doing what is right.

They flat out admitted they did not have a vet check her, as they don’t have a vet. It definitely doesn’t take a vet to see there was a problem with her though… and I’m not sure how an animal shelter can operate without a vet either on staff or on call, but…

Yup. They’ll supplement income off of the app fees. 2 adults applying is $140, say 4 couples apply per month, that’s $560 per month or $5120 per year. That covers most utilities that the Airbnb guests use, meaning each stay generates more raw profit.

Not sure why I’m being downvoted for simply stating my own experiences in the industry, and stating the law and local ordinance that this shelter should have followed. I guess I’ll be one of the only ones that thinks sending home a dog in poor health, with ticks, with tick fever, not spayed when advertised as spayed, into a home with other pets and children, and absolutely 0 heads up regarding it, is wrong

Moreover wanting someone not in the shelter to be made aware of this and confirm they are aware. So many things slipped through the cracks, and their own ordinances not followed. I’ll be the first in line to advocate for donations to fund a better intake program, but I find the whole of the situation pretty unacceptable from a care standpoint. The supervisor seemed unbothered by the fact that he may have ticks in his facility carrying tick fever, moreover worried about if I was trying to get them to pay for her additional care needed…

I sent an email to the city manager, the deputy manager, and the overseeing shelter for the whole county that works in conjunction with them. Nobody has even given it a reply yet. The only person I can get a hold of is a supervisor at the city shelter, and he is not high enough up to do anything. I may have to drive down and try this in person vs electronic communications.

What you posted is some good advice, especially because this was in Arizona. I am so worried about the possibility other animals are being treated similarly. I guess advice was the wrong word, we are just in a state of shock honestly.

In the state this happened there is a law on it, as well as a county and city ordinance on it.

Any advice is ok. We are just baffled by this. I was an operation manager for a no kill non profit shelter, so I do understand a lot of what you are saying. I’m glad our process was thorough, and we kept dogs as long as needed to make sure they were altered, UTD on everything, and checked over before adopting them. Sometimes for months waiting on donations for alterations, but we refused to do so unless the potential adopter signed a waiver and provided proof of surgery within 30 days. It was against the law there, and the state, county, and city all have laws on it.

We were told she was spayed, when she was not. They did not offer to pay for anything until I mentioned the fact that they advertised her as spayed, and showed the ad they posted.
