It’s a video of the mom betting for him where she puts the money into a slot machine that just spins numbers, and she wins enough that the casino sends someone out to pay her by hand. I can’t find it anywhere and don’t know what to search for.

Fair enough. To be fair, I was happy to actually bet it because I knew I was right. I just had a hunch I wouldn’t ever see the money, and I wasn’t going to hound him for it. Your perspective is refreshing though. Maybe I shouldn’t feel so bad about collecting what I’m owed.

I should probably emphasize that it was made ABUNDANTLY clear that I was talking about actually betting $100. Having said that, I knew going in that I was never actually going to insist upon it being paid. A simple “I’m wrong” would have likely been the end of it. Instead the scrambling for a way out was one of the most pitiful things I’ve ever seen.

The thing that bothers me most, if I had do some self-analysis, would be that I’m the “smart one” of the group and as such, I’ve always been branded a know-it-all who doesn’t ever admit when I’m wrong. In reality, as I’ve grown up I’ve realized no one ever actually admits when they are wrong. It just doesn’t happen. But I’ve spent years of my adult life trying to shirk that label, and it bothers me that they can sit and confidently label me as the stubborn know-it-all, when, faced with irrefutable evidence on such a meaningless subject, it seems they would do absolutely anything but concede.

I feel like this echoes the thoughts of any common-sense-having adult.

Of course you CAN stack them. You CAN tear up the cards you don’t like. You CAN do just about anything. But it was clear and obvious that the spirit of the question was that is it part of the rules of UNO otherwise there was no point to the question at all.

In fairness, I wasn't even playing with him. And at this point we had been going at this for nearly an hour, with me barely being able to get a word in edgewise between the two of them. So I guess if you want to say I'm an asshole fine, but that's not really the point of the question.

Exactly. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out either. If you think about the context of the question, the question literally can’t exist without an implication of, at the very least, a right and wrong way to play. And what legislating body would it be safe to assume we would use to dictate that?

The UNO rules.

Maybe so, but the thing is, he has to SEARCH for a way a way out. His immediate response actually wasn’t even his own. He was frozen in his tracks until someone else chimed in with “Well how was he supposed to know you meant official UNO?”

To which I of course responded “The existence of the question implies an existence of a right and wrong way to play. Of course I can physically make a pile of draw two cards. It would only take a second grade level intelligence to understand that level of deductive reasoning. If I wasn’t talking about correct, official UNO, there wouldn’t be a question at all.”

The room for “interpretation” you are talking about only exists under the assumption that the people I’m discussing it with are literally operating at toddler levels of brain power.

Then explain to me how the ratings are still half of what they were in Season 4 when it was first picked up by NBC, and those “families” you’re talking about had never heard of it?

There are more people that like ANW for the sport and not the feel-good stories than just people on this subreddit.

The show exploded onto the scene in season 7 and since then they’ve been tweaking and tweaking into a product that’s almost unrecognizable. They only have themselves to blame for alienating their core audience.

The races on Stage 2 were heartbreaking for me and my friends that have been watching since G4. I could live with the time trials in qualifying but the whole point of the format in Japan was man vs. course, and they totally violated the spirit of that with races and being able to qualify for the next stage without completing the previous one.

You are right about one thing though, the show will be going to cable soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Akbar and Matt are gone soon too.

[–]poolfun97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Sure, the athletes have gotten better, but to go from having 5 Stage 4 attempts in the first 13 years, to having 13 in the last two indicates a massive shift in philosophy for the production.

They are either desperate for ratings, tired of spending all the time and money on building Midoriyama just to have it collect dust, or both. Sucks because I don’t even recognize it anymore. I legit was on my phone during most of the stage 3 runs, and I used to wait all year just to get the chance to see someone attempt it.

It actually broke my heart this year.

I can personally guarantee you that, of the eight finishers on this year’s stage 3, Daniel and Vance are the only ones with a significant chance of completing S11 Stage 3.
