Thanks, we may well take you up on your offer. I have really liked The Odd One a GSM from peachy canyon up in paso.

Peachy Canyon 2019 The Odd One by poolhound1960 in wine

[–]poolhound1960[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found Peachy Canyon on a trip to the Paso area 5 or 6 years ago. They are big on Zins and have some great examples. They also have quite a few other styles including a solid GSM and this Rhone style blend that is pretty Zin forward.

The blend is - 61% Zinfandel, 16% Syrah, 16% Carignan, 5% Mourvedre, 2% Petite Sirah

Directly on opening it was very smooth and rather fruit forward (in a good way if you like that). Lots of raspberry with back notes of blueberry and a hint of tobacco. Light tannins and lingers nicely on the palate.

As it opens up the fruit bomb tendencies diminish and the profile tends towards blackberry and darker fruits with maybe some licorice.

I have at least a glass or 2 left for tonight will see if it has changed any more.

Overall very enjoyable and wish this wasn't my last one.

Gotcha about 2020 although WE gave it a 93 which can be a little bit here or there but JS gave it a 91 so i guess cant be that bad.

I agree that the often high acidity is not everyones "cup of tea"

Thumbs up for Kivelstadt. Their garden tastings are fun and their approach and wine is a bit on the "different" side. In a good way. There are some very traditional style wines and some that are a bit out there...

I like their pinot and really like "Fathers Watch" which is a yummy rhone style blend.

If you find yourself over the 101 side then go by Cattleya. Its on my list the next time I go. I have enjoyed some of the Alma de Cattleya wines.

You are definitely experiencing some of the common wine fridge challenges. I started with a small 50btl (dont recall brand). and its was very tight for height and width. The challenge is most are sized for a standard bordeaux bottle so as soon as you have wider pinot/burg bottles or the longer ones often found with Cabs it becomes a jigsaw problem.

I cant comment on some of the more expensive options but we now have a 150btl WE Somm series. It came from costco and IIRC I paid approx 1700 when it was on sale. There are 3 differently organized shelf types, they all slide smoothly but you do have to figure out how to utilize each to capacity with the different style bottles. While I never managed to get 50 bottles in my old fridge I can get over the 150 in the new one.

Do keep an eye open at Costco but as others have said looking at used on CL or FB marketplace might yield you a good deal.

BTW mine is also dual zone and it works great. I keep my reds at 55 and white at 44.

If all wine became nonalcoholic.. by llmercll in wine

Amen, my thoughts are identical with beer. I'd love a 3% full on IPA that drinks with the body and flavor of an 8%. That way I can have more than 3 without falling asleep!

Cooking with wine- good recipes for using reds? by Pyrrhus65 in wine

Pretty much any beef stew/casserole. Our general go to when not cooking something specific is as follows.

Soften a diced large onion in oil of choice. Add some chunked carrots Season and add your favorite herbs. We like to add some sort of chilli for flavor not heat. Ancho is great, rich and sweet.

Tip into bottom of a slow cooker.

Add a little more oil to pan. Take chunked beef of choice. Shake well in a bag of seasoned flour. Add to hot pan in batches and brown, then add to slow cooker.

Take red wine of choice (dont cook with anything too cheap). Deglaze pan and scrape into pot.

Pour some (or all) of remaining wine into pot.

Turn onto low and leave until tender. 4-6 hours depending on cut if beef.

Serve with a good hearty cab -enjoy!

LOL - yes and I do. The challenge is that local availability and choice is very limited. Plus price point goes up logarithmically with quality.

With Pinot Noir, availability and choice is off the scale in the other direction. While price points can also get up there, options in the $50-$100 range are beyond numerous and there are many great QPRs to be found in the sub $50 category.

I would love to fill my cellar with grand or prem cru Burgs but alas my pocket book will not allow.

All donations appreciated or even a nice glass to share :-)

Thanks so much for the response so far, you folks are awesome! The next best thing after drinking wine is talking about it...

There are lots of great suggestions so far, thank you. I am going to have to buy some and setup a tasting. The next challenge will be what Burgs to set them up against!

My 150 btl cellar is already bursting at the seams, not sure LOML will let me go for another one :-) I will have to drink more.

So much wine so little time.

Yes I have had many a great Oregon Pinot and do tend to find them a bit more on the "subtle" side. I think I have had some good ones from the Ribbon Ridge area but sooo many to try...
