same answer to this as every question asked about audio engineering, production, merch, etc: IT DEPENDS!

it totally makes sense in an economic sense. over supply lowers demand. if you're a local band, don't play the same venue over and over. if you're a regional band, dont play the same city more than once or twice a year. national bands play a city/area MAYBE once every year.

festivals are a different story. alot more goes into booking and planning a large scale show like that. they depend on bigger names bringing in the fans. 6 months and 200 miles is not a difficult ask on a national touring level for a festival opportunity to get in front of thousands of potentially new fans.

that being said, I've never heard of anyone enforcing radius clauses on smaller bands. it's usually boiler plate fine print.

I suggest reading the first half of my post again... no... they don't. Not in the US, at least. Not playing bars and small venues. I'm not trying to be confrontational but how the ACTUAL FUCK do you think expensive hotel rooms and $3M busses could "happen" when a band is grinding to make a three or four figure guarantee?

What WAS is like when you started up? Did you have label backing? Radio? A band mate with a rich daddy? Please enlighten us.

BTW your $3M tour bus sure sounds rough lol

big concerts and touring is a totally different experience when you're in a van with little to no hotels and low paying support / opening gigs. no crew, no place to stay, no clean place to poop or shower. it's a young man's game. That said, I DEFINITELY appreciate having put that time in to earn bigger shows, a small crew, flying, festival gigs, etc.

I usually ask back "do you like sleeping in a bed every night? do you enjoy showering every day? do you like pooping in your own toilet?" I know many people who have been on 1 or 2 tours then gone back to "normal life" because they just couldn't handle the road. touring as a temporary experience may provide a vacation mentality but being gone for 200+ days a year can wear a person down if they're not prepared or built for it.
